anybody know how to track a canadian documentated car's history? I have heard that the ministry of transport will search history of a canadian vin back to 1973. I want to track a 'canadian documentated' vin history. as the prices of all these camaro's rises, it is nice to know 'it is what they say' thanks!

We bought our SS396 Chevelle in 1997. At the local license bureau we go the $20 information package on the car showing all the owners back to day 1, about a dozen in all. The package also shows if there are any liens owing as well. Through this I tracked down the original owner and actually met him. Neat stuff.

That's not always the case unfortunately. If the car has been sitting in someone's barn for 10 years, it may even be removed for the ministry's database. You will only get all the history from day 1 if the car has always been on the road with minimal interuptions. Ted is talking about cars from the Province of Ontario. The Province of Quebec for example does not allow any previous owner or car history tracking whatsoever. Not sure about the other Canadian Provinces.

Super, you can get the documentation from General Motors of Canada. I haven't personally done it, but I know there are members on here with Copos, etc that have done it, maybe they will pipe up and give you some contact info. Info will come from the head office in Oshawa ,Ontario.
This might help you get started, check out this thread:

I guess I should have been more clear with my above post. The Chevelle has always been in the province and with a dozen or so owners the paper trail has been fairly extensive. Our el Camino only went back a few years at which point it probably came from outside the province.

Do Your Homework..........it pays off!
I did mine with the help of folks in here and thank God I did!
My "Canadian Gold" 67 SS 427 was built in Oshawa and George Zappola from GM Vintage Services really helped. I also did a past title search...WELL WORTH THE 11 USD!
Here are a few links. C&P....
