View Full Version : 10,000.00 4296 ZL-1 Carb
I just purchased a fully restored 4296 ZL-1 carb for 1,200.00 and was feeling that I may have paid a little to much....guess not. I guess Heartbeatcity needed for his ZL-1. How many buyers are out there for 10,000.00 carbs??????????????

LOL... Looks like Jimmy and Frank both entered huge bids but probably didn't expect to have to pay anything close to that much. If I had a ZL1 I would be yanking the carb and putting it on Ebay.....Too funny..
I spoke to the seller early on and he was looking for 900.00. Kind of reminds me of the Future Liner ... just a lot less zeros

Depends upon the date code, I guess. If you have a January date code, I'm guessing you could get a 50% premium if the same to people are bidding. Unfortunately, one of them now has a carb. Although Frank probably would prefer NOS, so you might still get a big number. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I wonder if the seller is still going to make the buyer pay the shipping. There was a NOS 4296 on ebay at the same time with a "buy it now" price of 1595.00. It ended with no bids. ?????

It's all about the part #'s and date codes. Look at those YH rally wheels that sold recently. Even if they were restamps they went for some big money. These cars are like puzzles to some people and they just need to have the most correct part to complete the puzzle. So money really isn't an issue for them. Now on one side, Jim at HBC has been buying NOS stuff for high prices so he can get some really decent repo stuff made with the NOS as the "mold" if you will. I have no complaint about him paying a high price if he plans to introduce some better repo stuff.

I know where a 4296 carb is sitting on this guys shelf collecting dust. I passed it up cause I didn't need it, guess I will have to see if it is still sitting around on that same shelf.

This might be like the LS-6 dipstick, the 69 Camaro rivited sill plates, and the x-rams that went for abnormaly high numbers. Ebay will be flooded in a few days.

Wow. And I thought I was crazy for spending $1000 for a restored carb for my 4-speed, 455 HO, two years ago. (Now they're $2000 for a rebuildable core!)

Guys !
I'm all for the correctly dated components as well. It's
an obsession. But you have to ask yourself just one big
question. Would the addition of a properly dated 4296
bring the price of this car up an additional $10,000.00?
I don't think so. I bought a dated 4296 body about a year
ago and I'm hunting the correct baseplate now.
Anybody got $10,000.00 they don't need?

The NOS one is back with a BIN price of $4,599. It was $1500 5 days ago!http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NOS-4296-carb-L88-1969-ZL1-camaro_W0QQitemZ4615361292QQcategoryZ34202QQrdZ1QQ cmdZViewItem

Different guy. Look at the bid history on the first auction. Orangecountychopper was bidding against heartbeatcity at one point. Also, when I bid to win, I always use odd numbers, OVER the amount, ie, if 10,000.00 is my max, I may bid 10,001.63, just in case. Both fdihartce and heartbeatcity bid just UNDER the 10,000.00 mark, which is a little odd (not saying anything is wrong, just a little odd).

Nice!
I wonder if chopper boy can produce an image of his so called NOS carb ?
I have no problem showing mine with its correct dates and such. I can even prove the ink stamps correct numberings, size and locations as well....
Weren't these repop'd in a short run by Holley not too long ago then discontinued?
Also, werent the first batch of ZL1 cars mis-carb'd?
My guess would be Holley got the notice well after this carb's stamping and assembly!
When were the replacement 4296 carb's actually produced, stamped and delivered to the regional dealerships for retrofitting???? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
That brings me to wondering if that 912 date code is actually an L88 intended carb. I have an NCRS guy looking into date runs for those cars....
I emailed "chopper boy" and ask if this was the same carb that was priced at 1,599.00 6 days ago. Here is his responce.
"Its called keeping up with the market...Used is now 10K, mine is NOS and 1/3 of the price"
For 1,599.00 or 3,499.00 I would expect at least one picture. Plus I don't belive his carb has a date code.

Ok, so my guy says that Holley batch makes these, however I am unsure the date codes were stamped as ordered. So, I feel that date codes were done as assembled.
I seem think that the GM part numbering is always rather off in comparison to date codes' more aligned font arrangements, so maybe the GM # is done as the air horn starts out then dated after assembly is completed---maybe not. The 4296 ink stamp could help identify it during assembly prior to satmping the air horn as well... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif
So, the L88 was well into the run and he states they were to have the 4296 throughout the run. I have not seen earlier dated ones so that for me is still something I'd like to see.
So, is this carb originally an L88 or ZL1 intended use based upon this?
Thoughts...?
