Glasurit BASF Paint System

Anybody have any experience with the BASF/Glasurit paint system.? Looking to spray the firewall and floors of a 70 Nova the correct shade of black with as much durability as possible as this car will be driven.I will have a heated booth to spray/cure the paint in. Any help is appreciated Thanks SULLY

Hey Sully,I own a collision repair facility & have a basf paint system. When i do a restoration & paint the firewall Or refinish frames,suspension,rearends,wheelhouses ect.,I use a Spies Hecker product called FP1004 Ralley Matt black . It is a single stage that dries between a dull & semi finish & is very durable.A local restoration shop turned me onto this a few years ago.Hope this helps, Jeff

Jeff, From all the misc restos and articles I have seen or read over many years I am thinking a black "between dull & semi" is not shiny enough to replicate original. I used Delstar Acrylic Enamel with various amounts of flattner. I am not happy with durability and will change to ?? next time. I also used DP-90 as primer and am thinking maybe an etch primer or ? would have been a better foundation for the black. Difficult area to get correct, if you intend to drive a car, even occassionally.
I also offer pics taken of a SuperCar Workshop COPO and a Chuck Huber frame, which appears "duller" than Original ?

The amount of gloss in the factory blacks depending on a lot of things, plant, person, temp & humidity being a few. I don't think there is a perfect sheen to strive for.

Marlin, I do understand your point of view.....and do not think that even G.M.painted every frame, fenderwell, control arm, etc the same shade/sheen every shift,day,week or model year.......I am suggesting when these misc cars are judged and scrutinized as we do here and at places like Carlisle....I dont think a restorer should be able to rationalize his way off coatings and color shades, by using the anything/anyday can happen justification.
I agree there is no perfection on this subject. I am only trying to help non professional restorers replicate the factory look & acheive comparible results, the likes of the professional shops.
On the other hand if a person doesnt care about accuraccy, judging and what others may think........do as you want, do as you will.....its your car!!!!!!!

I think most judges recognize the point that I was making, and judge appropriately. The best advice is to simply duplicate what you find on the particular car that is being restored. Pull a boot off the firewall for eg. and there's your guide!

The Spies Hecker looks real nice and is very strong. I think it is as close the look of factory as you can get.
Standox makes the same rally black. Dupont also makes hotrod black and it looks the same. Funny how three diff paint makers have the same product I guess that is because Dupont ownes Spies and Standox. Any way they all look great and cost the same.

I spray BASF/Glasurit and i have had no problem with flattening the 22 line to get the various sheens of black.

The old Glasurit '21 line' (flat) works great if you can find it. The hardener gives it a nice semi gloss sheen.

I worked in the paint mixing room at G.M. in 1959. we mixed by the 55 gal. drums. If we spilled some in mixing we did'nt throw it away it was just a little off color.You see,nothing is perfect.

I ended up painting the firewall/floors/hood underside The Spies Hecker Rally Matt Black ,came out very nice and very durable. My painter, who has many years experience, said the paint was very high quality for a single stage, it ain't cheap though. SULLY
