Hey everybody!
Here's a good one. Check out eBay Item number: 8044553424
This is a rough casting of an original ZL-1 block. And,
when I say rough, I mean rough. It comes complete with the
Winter's foundry logo and '052 part number. As far as
useable stuff goes, that's about it.
This block is not milled in any way ( deck, mains, bores,
lifters, oil passages, water jackets on the deck, internal
threads on the decks, timing cover, oil pan rails, etc.).
I'm sure there are other things that need to be done as well
to this block.
It's a nice conversation piece for the ZL-1 crowd, but how
useable is it in the real world?
So the question is really this. Could any shop actually be
able to perform all of the milling required on this block?
The oil passages alone need to be gun-drilled and that can
be expensive. I looked into this once to convert a 2-bolt
main block into a 4-bolt main block ( correct casting date
& casting number ). I bet the milling costs would be
astronomical to say the least assuming that it could be
done dimensionally correct. You only get one chance with
that much work.......
So, assuming that all the planets were properly alligned and
you were in-good the the big guy upstairs, could this block
be machined properly today? All of the original setup
tooling at GM for Mark IV blocks is probably gone by now.
Actually, where were these aluminum 427 blocks machined back
in the day? Was that work done in Tonowanda as well?
Just wondering what others think about it. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif

my guess is that it did not pass inspection to be machined. im sure you could get a rough block as you can now and set your own crank centerline and deck ht for a custom stroke but this thing is really rough. great find though.

Just out of curiosity, what is a "rear" Supercar odddity? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/haha.gif
When I worked at Ford Casting in Flatrock MI back in '74, about 40-50% of the castings were scrapped, because the sand wasn't packed just right in the molds. My guess would be the block was red-tagged, and somehow didn't get tossed back into the smolter. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/scholar.gif
I wonder how that happened? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

Guys!
I was just wondering about this logo based upon another post
about it. It certainly is the most detailed Winters logo I
have ever seen. You can even make out the "R" in the lower
right. Could this have been an original prototype that was
saved for some reason? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
BTW, based upon some other feedback I have been getting on
this block, I'm wondering if it can even be fully machined.
I understand that the Tonawanda plant did all of the final
milling on these ZL-1 blocks back in the day. So that begs
the question: Does the Tonawanda plant even have the
original jigs, fixtures, and tooling required to finish
machine this part? If they don't, what are the
possibilities that any machine shop could come close to
getting things alligned properly?
Did somebody say boat anchor? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/stupid.gif

As expected, this casting is up to almost $1,100.00 at this
time. I still am wondering what any potential buyer is
going to actually do with it. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

More on the Winters logo. This is a logo on an NOS
tri-power intake I have here. See the lack of clarity on
the logo? Compare that to the logo on the block in
question.
Just interesting........ I'll get a life soon.

I can't believe someone would even ask what
the machine cost would be on it.http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif
There are not even bolt holes or water jackets. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
You can buy a new one for 3-5K with bolt holes. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Bob,
You gotta file down all those burrs & sharp edges !
If you don't, stubbing your toe on the coffee table
will get real bloddy. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif

Okay! Yes, This is my block. I didn't find a post until now. I don't know too much about this block other than what I have described. The block was included with 3 Yenko Cars that I bought from the Holub Collection about 4 years ago, along with a few other blocks. The question is if the water jackets are there full of sand, or is the block completely solid. I had an email with an idea to drill a hole in one of the freeze plugs to find out. That's great, but then I have a hole in my block, and it's never been touched. Anyone have any ideas?
I have no idea what this block is worth!

I understand thant some solid blocks were cast for special
racing applications. I'm sure some members here can fill
you in on that. I would think the weight alone would be
the key factor. With all of the water passages filled with
aluminum, this block would have to be 25 pounds heavier at
least. I'll bet at least one member here has one of these
blocks and can get you a weight to compare against.

Auction ended @ $1,510 ( pricy for a coffee table - huh )?
I would love to know who got this and what they actually
end up doing with it ( in reality ). http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif
