Thought I would share some info on a project I started today and then update as we progress. This is a 1970 L78 TH400 SS Nova....32,000 original miles..was raced early on and has 4.56 gears, slapper bars, trans. cooler, Accel ignition, old Sun tach, etc. The car is a real time capsule and is very solid..I can't find any rust..driveline is original with 3.55 code axle, CTY vin engine and CW hi-po trans. Plan on just cleaning things up and servicing brakes, steering,hoses/belts, fluids etc. for street use. I am also going to use existing parts from the stockpile to make a few changes: headers, Ansen valve covers, 163 and 850 Holley, original distibutor, wheels and tires......gonna try to use as much stuff as I can without buying anything (that'll be a switch) swapping in a better bench seat, will get gauges organized and maybe put in a vintage 8-track. No cosmetics to paint or trim other than clean/polish...it will be ugly, but fast! Planning on bringing it to the Nova Nats in July to have some fun with.
Do you love me more now, Sammy???
Stay tuned, wilma http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/Can-I-Have-It.gif The trunk is perfect. Tom, I am proud of you. You have seen the light. And about being ugly, take that car when you are done, along with your favorite restored nova to York or the Nova nationals and take note on which car gets the most attention. Also which car is MORE fun! Must be some good stuff in the drinking water in those NY hills lately. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif Now for BBBenny's bomb....should have let Schonye deliver it turn key so Benny don't mess it up with the smog pump and the 14 inch baby tires. Cool stuff on day one of "the project"..
Found original paper tag on brake booster hose..
Remnants of build sheet tape on pass. side firewall..
Engine date stamp T1218 CTY with VIN..
5 blade fan with TW1 stamped on blade..how did Chevy know?? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
The fan has the 8 hole pattern...??? Allen? Sully??
Water pump appears to be original..early date B 26 9...
BB a/t rad intact..
Original L78 valve covers..they will be replated and installed on another member of the family..
Plenty of grease, antifreeze, dirt, and tranny fluid...
Lot's of fun..more to follow
Watch out Sammy, the black beast is coming!

You GO Tom! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/burnout.gif
Great find...can I come and play with it? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Interesting date on that waterpump if it's the original..February 69.
I would imagine an #065?
Is the Radiator still holding the Prefix tag of ZE.
The Deepgroove Fan pulley should be part #3976060AP,and worth it's weight in gold. That #631AO is a NON Deepgroove 1971-74 base pulley.
Original engine..original driveline..deluxe interior..Original paint...Valve Covers w/drippers,..booster tag...5 bladed fan,etc.
I understand your day two obsession Tom,but I have to play Devils advocate here and ask,"What did this Time Capsule ever do to you?"
Go pick on a different one. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Rick, you are the detective and the man with the numbers...went out and pulled the crank pulley it ends 666AO so I guess they are both wrong. Sorry I don't know these numbers like I should..but that's what you guys are good at. 065 pump..no tag on rad..looks like a 3 core.I have another original th400 unit at the shop...will compare. Took a closer look at front of car..it may have been hit once or lost a water pump that took out fan and radiator. That would explain service replacement fan. Non-original by-pass hose/clamps on pump. Also noticed screws holding grill on instead of rivets..??? someone has been there before. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif well I never said it was a virgin...as for why I'm picking on it, why not? I have another 396 motor that I will be building this year to put in it's place and save the VIN motor..not worried about braking the trans or rear. If anyone has some deep groove pulleys they want to donate, send me a PM and I will forward ship to http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif
Thanks for the help, keep it coming..

Cool car, love the black Novas http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif
I'm not surprised that you would find some different parts on the nose of the engine, as it appears that something must have gone through the grill at some point - the small block core support and holdown are some clues. If you have screws holding the grill stiffener to the grill, then someone put an NOS grill on there at some time bec/ the NOS ones don't come with the stiffener attached.
Day 2 it all ya want, the Day 1 cars will still blow it's doors off http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif We still can't get Sammy to put up his day 2 at the strip, let's see some numbers dude! Well, here's the latest update on "the project". I definately think this car had some work done on the front end. Saw some GM parts labels on the 2 front bumpers brackets, couldn't read. Found a parts label on center support behind grill that comes up by the hood latch #3938635. Saw the word ACE on the inside of the front bumper??..now for some technical info:
Brake Booster Tag 342(front) 920(back)
Rear Stamp CBT 1028 G1 E
Trans Tag C70W 276
70 CW 1424
The tag is mint..it was covered with some oil and grease that protected it
engine T1218 CTY with VIN cowl tag 3rd week of jan/70
732 19 19 A
build sheet was in rear seat..not much on it though..body number matches cowl tag..trim and paint match.. #1 box FLT #2 box ZJ1 #3 box ZL3 and that's it....
Starter..had a Delco Remy Re-manufactured label
1108430 4F26 1
found a wire on drivers side near washer bottle with a connector that looks like it is for the Low Washer Fluid Indicator light..don't know if this connector is on all cars or just those that ordered the Aux. Lighting???
Front disc brake calipers look original with the little blue plastic bleeder covers
yellow traction bars on back with some black paint sprayed on them..probably vintage Lakewoods
underside is incredible..very solid with just a light film of surface rust..looks like a little root-rot in pass side frt fender at the very bottom..typical Nova..
battery tray was shot..rust holes, but no problem underneath it.
everything is stripped down under the hood..next step is to clean and degrease engine bay and underside.
original style spiral shocks on front with factory labels
original riveted ball joints..rest of suspension looks factory.
hope to have some photos tomorrow to post. Thanks for watching..

Hi Tom, Everything looks good on your end.But not painting the car it will even look closer to the ealr 70's. Good choice! BTW Sometimes I can't figure out why Marlin hammers me so much about this day-2 stuff. I know we go back and forth but I never bug him about racing or anything like that. Sometimes he seems just not to quit. I don't like the day-2 look just to be able to beat somebody that has a pure stock car. I just like that era. Don't know where he is coming from somedays. I am just having fun but I think he means some of these statements. I am not the only guy that likes day-2 stuff. Don't always know how to take him. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif Thanks for listning. Sam

Update on "the project"....
Decided to check over some engine components and replace for peace of mind...lots of play in timing chain, so that's gone and since valve springs are original they are history too. Got some parts together from the shop today like: valve covers, BB deep groove pulleys, alternator, and lots of little stuff from the "parts pile". Next step will be new front springs, upper control arm bushings and shocks. Freshening up brakes front and back, calipers, hoses, etc. Want to be sure steering/brakes are good to go. Checked date codes on the 291 heads today..both the same K28 9. Sorry didn't get that new digital camera yet..maybe this week.

The little black Nova is making more progress tomorrow. Taking it over to a local buddies shop to install new front springs and control arm bushings. We will also freshen up the brakes and try to fit some headers to the existing exhaust.....Hey Sammy!!....found an old driveline loop at the shop, thought I might throw it on for good measure. Should bring it back home by the weekend and then start on some new valve springs and timing chain. Radiator is being serviced, rebuilding w/pump, starter, alt., etc. Then 163/850 setup goes on. Update on "the project"...front end is completely apart. Took all the control arms, brake spindles, backing plates, etc. to my local NAPA guy who has a hot tank and media blaster. Everything will be cleaned and all new bushings and lower ball joints installed. Removed original engine harness today (what was left of it). New unit going in this week. Cleaned the rest of the steering components and got some of the 35 year old grime off steering box. Original BB coil springs still had their tags: HH 3955727 Steering box had 5679142 dated 209 & HP stamped in yellow letters???? Cover of steering box had 7802287 CBC 13. All the tie rods and othe stuff appears to be original..very little wear. More parts to blast and clean this week and then hopefully get the front end back together by next weekend. Stay tuned..

here is some additional info from the steering box. I checked some detailed photos from one of the other cars. there is a little date tag that extends off the side of the aluminun cover. My May 1969 car has a date of B 1209..not sure what the B stands for, but 120th day of 69 is the rest. The little tag on the 70 car has B 0130...13th day of 1970..car has a January 21st build date. So the unit is original to the car. I also found the number 14 above the 290 on the housing...on the 69 car there is a 9 in that spot with same casting #. I think the 290 refers to the 290th day of 1970 model year, which would be approx the end of Sept. 69. I would assume the housing would be cast prior to the assembly date of the component. These little things are neat..if anyone has additional info on deciphering i would appreciate it.

Here is the latest report; found some great 15' steel wheels(with the help of Sammy) got them cleaned and painted today, 1st coat...GTO Don helped out with some vintage rubber that will go on those steel wheels: Goodyear polyglass F-70x15 fronts and H70x15 rear..should look awesome!! Still cleaning and painting lots of small parts but that stuff is pretty much done as of today. Rebuilt alternator and starter so there won't be any hassles. Found a date code correct 2000 distributor in my "parts pile" and got that spruced up and ready for action. Hope to finish engine related items this week and then concentrate on finishing suspension. 4.56 posi rear will get some fresh oil and lube along with the cool Day 2 finned cover...too many parts and too little time!

We put in the new Eaton coil spring in the drivers side tonite....what a job http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif these springs are 1" taller than stock..the spring compressor was working overtime! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif we will finish pass. side tomorrow nite and then get her back on the ground. IT IS ALIVE!!!!!!.....what a job, but finally got it running tonite, and it sounds great!! Plenty of issues came up but we got around them. Karen was worried that the neighbors would call the cops... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif I'll give a more detailed report in a day or so....time to kick back. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

The project is running and driving!! The motor makes great power and it really jumps when you step on the go pedal...installed the new airshocks tonite, washed her down inside and out, got a few little things left to do..but it is in the home stretch now. Will load on trailer Tuesday nite for the trip to Hunt Valley. What time is the burnout contest??

JB, only got one "easy" run in and then more rain delays. Some guys pulled out and others waited it out. Sun finally came out around 2:00pm. Car ran well..steering and brakes good..next time we will add more GO!

What does the slip say? Should be pretty good with all the time and effort you've been putting in - love those little caps http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Tom...did you bump the tire pressure up like we discussed?
Can't wait `till that thing makes a full-boogie pass down the 1/4. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif
