Hi guys,
I am just wondering what people think about a 1968 427 4spd biscayne.
I have run into a guy who has one for sale, and I am going to look at it on Sunday, So I don't know yet what HP 427 it is, but its a 4spd and has build sheet etc.
its a black car with blue int. I don't know what he is asking yet, but I know it needs a total resto, not much rust apparently, its been sitting 25 years or so on a farm.
I am used to what Camaro's etc are worth, but I am at a loss for these whales.. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

If it is a real 427/425 you better buy it. They are fast becoming very valuable cars. I am not totally up on values but suffice to say it would be substantial as compared to a regular Impala especial black/blue. Hard to get a much tougher looking car then a 425 ho Biscayne! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif Casey Marks here has a Butternut Yellow one.

So if I could pick it up for 5 or 6k would that be a good deal?
It sounds like a cool car, I looked at pics of some online, and there's a restored one coming up in the next BJ auction, they have a cool look to them.

Depends on how good/bad/missing it is...if its not a rusted out rat trap it would be a great buy..

Hey Mark,

I am currently looking at buying a '68 SS 427 Impala. It has been sitting for many years and is in rough shape. The good news is that is has the original drive line. I will post pics of it now. The down side is that the seller is looking to get around $15K for it. I don't think that is reasonable for the condition of the car.

Good luck with the Biscayne!

Its not the 425 hp version ,its factory set up is the 385 or (he says..390hp) with an m20(wide ratio muncie) and 373 12 bolt.
floors and trunk are mint as is rest, rear quarters around wheel lips shot, but comes with a rust free back half from another biscayne.
comes with a spare 12 bolt, and 2 more doors, extra glass, extra interior parts, extra grill and bumpers and tail lights.
Its a "built in Canada" car. has tach and guages.
Tach appears to be about 5700 redline.
has 1 red foil 427 marker and 1 black one?..?
What else did these cars have that would be different than other biscaynes?

Neat cars, I have a 68 Yellow Bisquick 427-425,M22,4:88 F41 car that was built just to be raced. Until You have seen one turn sideways and row the gears it all changes. Big cars aren't supposed to do that. Good Luck with Your Purchase

If you don't buy it pass the info on, I'll take it. Ive had and L-72 Biscayne for many years, Of course mine is an alterd wheelbase car, There's nothing better than throwing the gears in a big block 4 speed Biscayne.

The red marker light was for high performance 427 usually 425 h.p., It was not uncommon to have different emblems from the factory. My car is a red badge 427.

The early cars had the foil inserts. There is No ryme or reason to the color. The red Did Not indicate Horsepower. There were several vendors for the markers and later in the year the cast emblem each carried a specific part number on the back side. Flip one over and You will find numbers for the different displacements on it. Attached is the cast 427 emblem

Its ok you aren't hijacking, but your image links for the pics don't work.
Any info and pics on these cars is a help to me.

So far I'm still negotiating on the car. we are a little apart on the price yet.

The restored car and the other car needing restoration are different cars! The restored car pic is from another website.

Russ, isn't the unrestored car an Impala SS w/ a 427 not a SS427 car....no SS high-hood, fender gills etc? . There was someone on here a few weeks back w/ a similar car? . Is the one you're considering an L72 or L36 car? ~ Pete

Hi Pete,

The seller has the SS hood and fender grilles. Although I haven't verified them myself, he also stated that all numbers match and the motor appears to have never been out of the car. I need to pay him a visit soon and take a look for myself. The car does have the SS badges on the dash and trunk.

In this pic if the drivers side, you can see where the grilles were:

I'll post more pics after I go look at it!

I have a 68 SS 427 car. I think it is a Caprice but it has no markings on it. We bought it for a beater at lien sale back in 1978 . It was towed out of a parking lot at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. This was the car we all piled into when we were kids to go out in. Still have it sitting in a warehouse... sucker always starts right up.. this is an old picture and is actually of my 63 split but you can see the cars back end and the SS427 in the lower right ... car runs like a freight train.. used to tow my 24 foot day cruiser with it to the lake.. even while towing it would pass everything but the gas station:)

Van,
Do you think it is a Caprice because of the roof line? That appears to me to be an Impala SS427 Custom Coupe not a Caprice based on the rear emblem and lack of Caprice chrome. It is the rarest of the three body styles. It would be nice to see more pictures some day if you can. Here is what one looks like. The do not have much in the way of identifying markings denoting them as Impalas.68 Custom Coupe (http://www.impalass427.com/72res/RICKS68_2.jpg)

yea what Bill said,

we discussed that heap in the driveway on chevytalk.com last year when it was on e bay...looked decent enough but I think he was fishing for 8K or so for it..??? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif to much dough considering what it takes to do one today...and done cars can be had on the cheap still, you want a headache start buying big car parts!!! they dont repop much and what they do is pretty bad...price some chrome for one of the these beasts...I yi yi... dont get me wrong I love them!!! just not a cheap cars to do and tough to at least break even when your done playing with it.

Bud.

Jim - - that is the EXACT combo that mine is ! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

YES - the red foil 427 badges are *typically* found on early cars. My L-72 '68 'Scayne has red foil and was a January build.

Thanks for the update Bud, what do you think is a fair price for the "heap in the driveway"? lol I am interested in it, but don't want to pay too much for it. I haven't seen any for sale lately to compare price wise.

Thanks,

Russ..

best to go inspect it and photo every inch of it and make sure its real first, then digest what shape she is in...I recall the guy had a pretty good add, but his place just looked not so hot didnt give you that warm fuzzy fealing,

call Rick he probably knows where a done car is for 10k, there was what sounded like a neat '67 396 Custom Coupe Caprice almost a twin to my old car for 6500 done, along month ago up here, called on it but never went to look at it would probably be here if I had... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif it sounded like a nice driver...I think you can find one done way cheaper than doing one...

Rick , That is exactly what it looks like. I keep forgetting to get pictures of the car when I go up to Sears Point (refuse to call it Infine...) but I will get some next time for sure. That photo is a scan from a shot taken in 1986 when the vette was being restored and is the only photo I have .

To the guys who have these cars, is the front emblem above the grille supposed to have a red bowtie or a blue one?
(I have one of each),
How are these cars to drive with manual steering?
Is there anywhere to get a new trans 4spd hump? mine is butchered beyond help.
Does anyone repop the foil red 427 decals for the side marker bezels? mine are extremely faded.
