Was just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on carb selection. Just finishing up my 454 for my 72 nova SS. Mild 454, th350, 25-2800 stall, 3:73 rear. Car will be 99% street with occasional strip use. Have a used 4779 Holley 750dp, can get a decent 780 vac sec but, was considering an Edelbrock (AFB or AVS 800) or even a worked Q-Jet. I want something I can drive and not have to adjust all the time.

John;

The 4779 wouldn't be on the top of my list for what you're wanting to do. Depending on which version it is, a 780 vacuum secondary would likely suit your needs much better.

A prepped QJet would also be a good choice, as would either Edelbrock carb.

Which intake manifold are you running, and are you concerned with having an operational choke on the carb?

Running an Edelbrock RPM oval port. Would like an operational choke since I will probably run a carter mechanical pump. Don't know what version the 780 is. I was told it came off a 68 or 69 427 Impala. Maybe it would be worth buying just to have because He says it was the original carb from the car.

You'll need something with an electric choke with that intake as it's not compatible with any OE style divorced choke systems.

If you can, find out what the "LIST" number is on the Holley carb. If it truly is an OE `68 or `69 427 Imp Holley, it should either be a 4053 (1968) or a 4346 (1969). Unfortunately, both of those are divorced choke carbs.

If you can find an early 3310 (an original "EH" 3310 or a 3310-1 are my personal fav's) and add a later style baseplate (that's if you need the 3/8 vacuum port, if not the original baseplate would be OK) and an electric choke would probably work just fine for what you're wanting to do.

Holley is sure easy to tune...no dicking around with step up rods...

I'd have to agree w/ the above comments. I love the 3310's. I used to work auto retail in St. Paul and sold a bunch of them in the late '80s-early '90's. If there was ever a problem w/ a beginner install I could typically tweak it in the parking lot within minutes.

Very forgiving and easily tuneable.

I'd like to try one of the newer Demon versions when I get around to my '72.

I use all Holleys,I use a couple of different carb rebuilders that make serious performance carbs.I just had Performance Racing Components build a 750 for my 67 Ss Chevelle and man does it work great,I also use Davinci Carbs also.Neither are cheap but you get good products that work.The 750 I just had worked on now produces 820 cfm and makes the old Chevelle SCREAM!Although I do have a Thermoquad on a little 340 Mopar that Kicks AZZ!

How about an edelbrock q-jet? Anyone try one? Like or dislike them?

I have some friends that run edelbrocks on there street rods,some like them and some don't.The newer ones I understand are adjustable to where the older ones are not.Most people that run them say that the performance is just not ther like a Holley.The edelbrocks are pretty dependable carbs.A good holley with 4 corner idle circuits and a little tweaking is the best in my opinion.But you are doing the right thing by getting opinions from others before investing the $$$.
