Muscle Cars
Rare ’glass up for grabs
People will argue that Corvettes are not muscle cars, but when you stuff high horsepower engines into a small body—that’s a muscle car, performance car or whatever you choose to call it.
Those of you seeking out the best-quality original Corvettes should shuffle off to Bloomington Gold in St. Charles, Illinois from June 16 through June 18, where some very rare and original Corvettes will be up for sale at the Mecum auction.
One of the rarest is a COPO 1967 convertible in Silver Pearl with red interior, powered by a 350hp 327, with a four-speed and side exhaust. The Corvette was special ordered by a man who demanded a silver car with red interior and made phone calls to just about everybody who would answer a phone in order to get his car—a COPO machine that survives today with all of the requisite documentation.
Another ’67 for sale is a very desirable 435hp convertible in rare Elkhart Blue with teal interior, a gorgeous combination. This car has but 8,903 actual miles, is totally original and comes with all of the appropriate paperwork. What a ride this will be with 4.11 rear, and off-road exhaust, (not the noisy side exhaust, but under-chassis pipes). The car oddly has power windows and a completely original engine, which has never been opened up. This Corvette has coveted Gold Benchmark and Survivor status. With all the phony 435s out there for sale, this is a chance to get a "real" one.
Lastly, a beautiful pair of 1965 convertibles for sale. One is Nassau Blue with white interior and has but 14,151 actual miles. The second is red with 23,397 miles that is unrestored and in excellent condition. Both have the rare 327-365hp V-8s with solid lifters and great performance without big-block prices. These rare Corvettes will be sold as a pair. Both have knockoff wheels and non-DOT tires. Overall, there will be 500 Corvettes up for auction at Bloomington Gold.

-------That 67 435 Elkhart car is very, very nice. I may be mistaken but I believe its had a rear quarter-panel. Cant remember which side. Otherwise, an extremely original car!!!.......Bill S

Bill, you are correct, one of its rear quarters was replaced however it is as you said an extremlely nice car. I am going to guess that the car will sell for over 300K

Steve,

------As crazy as it seems that pricing is probably about right, at least this week!!! I just played a small part in the change of ownership of a relatively undiscovered 67 black 435 18000 mile convert for quite a bit more than that. I had been thinking that Corvettes had been lagging behind their steel cousins in the great appreciation race, but apparently nothing could be further from the truth. Some of the prices that I have "heard" that Pro-Team is paying back up your analysis 100 percent.........Bill S

Bill, I just spoke with Chris P. and he told me about Fridays event. Truly amazing money is being paid for truly special 67BB cars but as they say "they are not making any more real ones".

I will miss the event this year. First time out since 1999. The changes at the hotel screwed up my long time reservation. When the dust settled.....the room rates went up another $40 per night and my room was put into a draft. I guess all these high prices on Corvettes mean that we can all pay more for entertainment.

I think 6 months time will tell the 'real' story where the classic car Corvette hobby is going. History shows http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/scholar.gif when real estate backs up....the hobby cars usually are next.
