I NEED HELP AS TO WHAT WOULD BE THE "BEST TRUCK" TO TOW MY CORVAIR--<2500 POUNDS> ON A 3000 POUND " OPEN "TRAILER..? I'M RETIRED, SMALL BUDGET..I'VE BEEN LOOKING AT CHEVY 1500, TOYOTA TACOMA, OR TUNDRA, ARE ANY OF THESE GOOD, OR WHAT ELSE, WHAT SHOULD I BE LOOKING AT AS TO V-6, V-8. I'LL ONLY BE GOING SEVERAL TIMES A YEAR ANYWHERE, 1000 MILES OR LESS ROUND-TRIP. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP---KASEY

Kasey,
Given your light towing requirements here are a few observations. I had a 4 runner to tow heavier vehicles (3600#)/heavier trailer (dual axle 7000# capacity). Electric brakes are worth considering. Even with your light loads (unless you have a 3/4 ton or > truck) you will be challenged when braking and you will wear your brake pads out surprisingly quickly on these smaller trucks. With a lighter truck like a 4runner/Tacoma (same frame) you also get "the tail wagging the dog" syndrome because the truck is so light. This can be dangerous at higher speeds. Balancing these loads so that the proper down pressure/weight distribution on the tongue is correct is critical. A 1/2 ton truck lets you get away with a few of these aforementioned challenges. Overall it is safer. I upgraded recently to a 1/2 ton Tundra and what a difference it makes. The truck hardly strains, it brakes more surely, and less strain is placed on the truck. 1/2 ton was a good decision for me. I tow 1 to 2 times per month (80 miles round trip) on relatively flat terrain. If you are going up/down hills/mountains you may want to consider a 3/4 ton particularly if you are hauling longer distances.
Good luck and happy retirement!
