Hey cool....love the Bombers too! . I think that B17 pic is "Fuddy Duddy" operational out of Calif? . My favourite is the Lancasters....Canadian eh! . They just spent something like 10 million on a Halifax bomber resto here in Canada and it's not even operational....one motor only fires up as part of the static display. . And we think these cars are a big project to restore! .

Man, what a thread this could be...as I type at my desk at work, I sit here and look at the scale recreation of a B-25J (from Motion Models no less!) I got for my grandfather for Christmas a few years ago...grandma was cleaning out some of his stuff the other day, and asked me if I wanted it...of course I snatched it up, and I was even lucky enough to get *THE* very pocket Bible he was issued when he entered the USAAF...talk about priceless.

Great stuff Rob....congrats on getting your Gramps stuff! . I was lucky to get my Gramps WW1 kit bag as I happened to be there the day my Grandmother was about to toss it. . It's all there....incl. helmet, the issued coins, putties, utensils, letters from Mom....also a journal from day one leaving the mountain farm to sign up right to the last entry when he arrived home closing with something like "I'll get up in the morning happy to milk the cows". . We've sure grown up in some fortunate times!!! .
So who here's involved in the ME-262 project? . I've followed the 262 resto loosely over the past few years....there's I think 3 of them they've been working on and one sold and recently sent back to Germany after test flights and knock-down for shipping. . They've done the 'Yenko conversion' thing swapping the original German 'Jumo' jet engines (that had a lifespan of only hours) for reliable GE J-85 units but otherwise resto of great detail down to paint marks etc. .
I know there's a few other 'Warbird' nuts here or 'Stormbirds' as the jets are known. .
Like I said earlier, we think these cars are a project! .

One of my favorite airplanes ever and one that I was fortunate enough to have a hand in helping in the original restoration. A friend and fellow enthusiast was killed in this airplane shortly after completion but the airplane is now nearing completion of it's second restoration.

The P51 will always hold a special place in my memories and are a blast to fly. I flew in "Ho Hun" several years ago and there is just not much like it.

This B-25, registered N86427, used to buzz the east bay (San Francisco) hills where I grew up back in the late 60s and early 70s. Man, there was no mistaking the sound of those two Wright R-2600s and often this airplane would roar right over the house. The owner, Ralph Johnson, was involved with several old airplanes out at Oakland back in those days and this photo was taken at an impromptu display at Oakland in 1967. That's me in the shorts under the nose. This B-25 is now in Spain in an air museum.

A buddy e-mailed this photo to me from 2005. It's a Lockheed P2H Neptune (former Navy sub hunter) now used as a fire bomber. Note the shadow of the airplane on the fence! That's pretty low! Hot day and a heavy load means she'll use up all the runway she can before getting airborne!

I love the contrast seen in this picture. A circa-1910 Curtiss pusher chugs past a supersonic B-1 bomber. (The pusher is flying along about 100 yards beyond the B-1.) And to think we made that technoligical leap in just about 65 years.

My navigtor (we flew the KC-135 tanker) took this photo one evening as we headed north during the '91 Gulf War. Two F-117 Stelath Fighters loaded with radar guided bombs inside their weapons bays. One the way back about an hour later the lead F-117 pilot told us that they'd bombed Saddam's "CIA building" that had a glass-walled exterior. The pilot said, "They're gonna' be pulling glass shards out of their asses for a long time."

Heres one not many have seen before unless you worked for NASA. This is the X-31 test plane that they had when i was there. Nice thing about working there is you get to know people who let you fly the simulators as well. my wife got to spend 30 mins in the X-31 Sim and almost fainted when she was told what other countries pay to fly just 10 mins in one!!!!!!

Great pics....love seeing more anytime! .
I've always wanted a Beech Bonanza....something about that cool V-tail and aluminum mix? . Make mine a first year '47....no paint, just the bare aluminum w/ stripes. .
On another note, I read last week how the Seattle Flight Museum has bought that old Trans-Canada Air Connie in Toronto that was an restaurant for a while, now there's a big fight on about it leaving Canada? . The Seattle group has a static resto planned even in the original Trans-Canada paint yet now they're being treated like they're stealing a national treasure and no one here wanted it for years and years? . It's disassembled now for shipping and the fight is on....I hope positive things happen soon as it just deteriorates further as time goes by.
So does anyone know what aircraft Yenko was into, ever flew or what he owned himself? .

I've got some video footage of a B-29 (Fifi, I believe) when it came in at Van Nuys a few years ago for an air show. I guess it's the only one flying until Boeing finishes the one they're restoring. It had a problem with an exhaust valve on #3 engine on take off, so it had to land and stay for a few days while it was repaired. There's something about the sound of those 4 radial engines running. I love them. I'll have to transfer it and make some quick time clips.

Wow, great news Rob....lay some pics on us if you can! .
I'd especially love to see the plane and nose-art shots....it's often amazing for hastily applied work done in breaks in the action. .
In England after the war when the scrapping was going on, someone had the foresight to save a few of the sections w/ the nose-art intact. . A few pieces off of Canadian planes were sent back here and are treasured displays today. .

Boobs especially in a lot of the nose art....and talented work from some fellas who seemed to have a real eye and feel for it? .
A couple nights ago I briefly leafed through this month's Warbird or whichever of the mags I haven't had a chance to read yet and there's a great nose art picture of the 'Weenie Merchant'. . Seems the pilot was well known as somewhat of a ladies' man and the boys painted up his plane w/ this Weenie Merchant name including a weiner character when he was on leave....it's great! . Anyone here w/ a digi camera have this issue yet? .
Looking forward to whatever you can post Rob plus there's others that may be very interested in studying any pictures of planes and nose art you have? . There's often no known pics of some of these planes and being such a big part of these guy's lives could mean a lot to some of the surviving Veterans left or their families. .

A very good friend of mine was a bomber pilot ( B-25 )
during WWII and he told me that as the war went on,
and the losses of air crews mounted, the censors eased
up on the air crews about the nose art. I have seen
pictures of some nose art that would be considered to be
somewhat risque by todays standards, let alone 60 years
ago. Wish I could remember where I saw them.......... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif
On a side note, I just thought I would share this with the
group. After WWII, my friend stayed in the Air Force ( Army
Air Corps then ) and started to fly fighters in Korea and
Vietnam. His last stint was in the F-4 Phantom over the
skies of Vietnam. As this was one of my all time favorite
airplanes, loud as hell, I decided to do something very
special for his 79th birthday. Using this thing called the
internet, I started doing research into his last stint in
Vietnam and more importantly his squadron back then. After
many months of effort, I found the correct tail markings,
color scheme, etc. for his last F-4 and I commissioned the
building of a highly detailed model to exact specifications,
right down to the inclusion of his name on the canopy. I
did this all without his kowledge as I wanted to present it
to him as a total surprise on his actual birthday.
In any event, I went to Florida with the model in tow and
unveiled it at his party. He was so overcome that he
cried. I later learned that he had also commissioned
replica's of each & every plane he flew during the wars.
Unfortunately, they were all lost to a fire sometime in the
late 1970's. He never thought he would see one again.
It was a touching moment. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Steve,
Great story and very nice model.
Attached is a shot of my dad presenting Jimmy Doolittle a model of a B-25. Not one of the actual B-25 that he flew off the carrier in the Tokyo raid in 1942 but possibly a later one he flew.

Ed,
It is an awesome plane to be sure. Still holds the speed
record! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif
The SR-71 was actually conceived by Kelly Johnson
in the late 1950's. It is truly amazing that an aircraft
of that vintage still has not been topped. I can only
imagine what it would have been like to work with Kelly
Johnson and the Shunkworks guys back then.... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/drool.gif
Actually, I was told once that the SR-71 actually flew
much faster than advertised. Love to know what the max.

I used to be an instructor pilot in the USAF back in the mid-90s. One day at Kelly AFB I was in the traffic pattern with two students letting them practice touch-and-go landings. A C-5 Galaxy transport was on final approach about a mile out from landing and I noticed that the C-5's gear was still up. We were on downwind getting ready to roll-in for a low-approach behind the C-5 and we had a front-row seat to what might have happened. I told my students that we were about to watch a C-5 do a belly-landing! I had to say something so I keyed the mic and calmly said, "Your gear's up" on Tower frequency. Man, those guys hit the throttles and went around like a shot! Just after I had said "Your gear's up" the Tower controller sent the C-5 around. That was a great learning experience for my students: Don't silence the gear horn! Most retractable-gear airplanes have a warning horn that sounds when the pilot goes to idle power with flaps extended and the wheels aren't down (the airplane thinks you want to land so it tells you that the wheels aren't down by sounding the warning horn). If you silence the gear warning horn and don't touch the throttles or lower the gear you might belly it in. That's probably what the C-5 guys had done and might explain the B-1 mishap. I wonder what the whole story is behind the B-1 incident?

The AF is not saying at this point:
A B-1B Lancer made a wheels-up belly landing at Diego Garcia Monday, skidding down the runway for 7,500 feet, according to Air Force reports. The four-person aircrew escaped from the plane. The B-1B was home based with the 7th Bomb Wing, Dyess Air Force Base, Texas.
The 20-year-old bomber was landing at Diego Garcia, a remote base in the Indian Ocean, at the end of a ferry mission that started at Andersen Air Force Base, Guam. The Air Force won’t say why the crew landed the plane with its landing gear retracted.
The plane caught fire but it was put out by emergency crews.

But only a U.S. Air Force pilot can land it on its belly in a perfectly straight line !!! Unless it was a malfunction you can bet that crew is flying transport buses now. I saw an SR71 do a fly-by at the open house at Scott AFB...once by low and slow....second pass he put it on its azz and went straight vertical til we couldn't see it anymore....and he went home...had wood for a week....

Just got this in an e-mail from a buddy who is a UPS MD-11 captain.
"The Boeing 747 LCF took to the skies for the first time Saturday, September 9, initiating the flight test program that will culminate in US FAA certification. The more than two-hour flight was the first of 250 expected flight test hours for the specially designed 747-400 freighter. The big jet can accommodate three times the cargo by volume of a standard 747-400 freighter. It took off under rainy skies from Taiwan. The flight test program is expected to last through the end of the year. The LCF also will complete more than 500 hours of ground testing in Taipei and Seattle combined. This comprehensive test program will ensure the LCF's reliability and ability to fly its intended mission."

From an old airplane magazine. Clay Lacy, in his DC-7 "Super Snoopy," races a dragster during the 1971 San Diego Cup airshow. In those days there were 1,000-mile air races and some of the guys thought that the prop-liners, with their speed and fuel capacity, were the way to go. Lacy came in 6th at the 1970 Mojave 1000 in this airplane but was not allowed to race at San Diego because the WWII fighter guys complained about the wake turbulence from the DC-7.

Last night circa 2300 our BAX (A B727-200C)aircraft flight 705BX encountered
severe weather over Alberta Canada. The aircraft was cruising at 35,000 feet
when it encountered tennis ball sized hail. The pictures below show some of
the damage. All landing lights were destroyed, as was the radar. The crew was
forced to make a "blind" emergency landing. Upon safe return to the ground, the
first officer and flight engineer quit. It is expected that the aircraft is a
total loss as its structural integrity has been compromised.

When I was younger ( some called me a yuppie ), I used to
drive SAAB's. I had a trememdous collection of SAAB aerospace
related images. I thought it cool that the roots of the
car came from an aircraft manufacturer. Anyway, here are
a few of my favorites. The Viggen was the Swedish Air Force
( don't all laugh at once ) multi-role fighter of choice
before the new Gripen came into use.

Two more of my favorites:
The Viggen was famous for its short, take off anywhere reputation.
This image shows a group of Viggens taxi-ing down a
snowy road preparing for takeoff. I used to call this one
"traffic jam of Viggens on the Garden State Parkway".
http://www.freewebs.com/nuch_ss396/misc/AS%5FFeb%5FMar%5F88.jpg
This is the new multi-role SAAB Gripen. It really is an awesome
fighter in its own right. Again, as can be seen in this
image, the claim to fame was that this fighter could use
normal roads for taxi & takeoff. How'd you like to look
out your front window and see this thing driving by ! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif
Hey Honey, you'll never guess what I just saw drive by the house....

So does anyone know what aircraft Yenko was into, ever flew or what he owned himself? .

The accident aircraft (N1230M a Cessna Centurion C210) was registered first to Yenko Chevrolet then Yenko Honda. Interestingly that number was reissued to a Acrobatic aircraft in 2003, I wonder if the owner of that aircraft knows the history of the number? The accident happened in March of 1987 at the Charleston, WV airport.

Closer look at the C-17 I posted pics of http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v99/HawaiianCamaro/Planes/C17b.jpg
This 1/9th scale radio-controlled C-17 model was built in the United Kingdom. To date it has about 20 flights. It was built as the centerpiece of a 15 program television series produced in the U.K. for the Home and Leisure satellite TV channel. Built with the aid of three friends, it took one year to build and is powered with 4 Jetcat P-120 turbines with a total thrust of 108 lbs. The models weighs over 250 lbs fuelled, and carries 12.5 liters (3.3 US gallons) of 95% kerosene and 5% turbine oil fuel. Ot! her det ails include 5 Futaba PCM receivers, 16 battery packs (93 cells), 20 Futaba servos, on board air compressor, electro/pneumatic retracts, etc. Wingspan is 20 feet 8 inches, and the top of the fin is 74 inches (6 feet 2 inches) above the ground. Takeoff weight is 264 lbs. The rear cargo doors open and they drop an r/c jeep on a pallet, as well as 2 free-fall r/c parachutists. The model also has smoke systems both of the inboard turbines, and uses 2.4 GHz data link to provide real-time data to a laptop computer on the ground while in flight, this data includes airspeed, turbine RPM, EGT, fuel consumption, etc. It is covered in fiberglass and epoxy resin. Built mainly from balsa and ply, with many glass and carbon fiber moldings to reduce weight. This C-17 Globemaster III is one of the largest jet models in the world today! Complete with retractable landing gear and pneumatically operated flaps

A few hours later, gutted out the engines, fogged the canopy and it is going to be the new monumnet over at Northrop Grumman a few miles away. Good thing they are on our side. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Back in '79-'80 my younger brother was the crew chief for the first F-16 officially put into service for the Air Force up at Hill AFB in Ogden Utah. His planes tail number was 001 for all us number freaks, they referred to it as balls one! I got to ride out to the plane with the pilots and crew in the van to the flight line, cool stuff. The first Israeli pilot to train and fly the B model (two seater) was Ilan Ramon. I just remember thinking this guy is the same age as me at the time, 22 and he was flying F-16's. Wow! Bad Ass. And my 20 year old brother was in charge of the plane. Amazing!

Shot from space. No conventional jet can climb to an altitude where the sky turns black and you can see the curvature of the earth. It's just the oblique angle of the space station as it flew from the northwest to the southeast as it passed bye. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/scholar.gif

Andy,
In no way was I trying to start a debate I was just commenting that the photo looks like it was taken from a much lower altitude. Both the SR-71, U-2 and WB-57 all are capable of flying at 100,000+ feet and at least two can fly to the upper fringes of our atmosphere where it is nearly dark. I have seen both photos and documentary's on both aircraft and I will be damned if I can find just ONE photo on the net taken from either aircraft. I did however find this link Space shuttle photo myth (http://www.snopes.com/photos/space/shuttlelaunch.asp) I promise they can take photos that appear much higher than what these photos appear to be taken from. Very neat pictures none the less. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

I told you I would find the truth, here are three cloudy memories and photo evidence !!
I was there for that launch. From my vantage point on the front of the waist cat, I took a full series of photos, from preparation, to traveling down the catapult, to the short air flight and water impact. It was a Ford Falcon that the Enterprise Weapons Department used to drive around Olongapo. In 1978 as the ship was leaving the PI to return to the States for an extended overhaul. The vehicle was no longer needed and was given a "burial at sea".
Posted by Rick in MI
This photo is not from a TV show. It's not doctored. It really happened. It's not a "test". The US Navy may not do this any more, but they certainly did it that day!
I was stationed on the ship, and I was there on the flight deck. I took photos. The ship was the USS Enterprise, and we were leaving Subic Bay for the last time before an extended yard period. It was in late 1978.
It was a Dodge.
Posted by I was there in West Michigan'
"I was on the Cat crew that shot it. It was a '67 Plymouth Valiant. This picture is taken from the cruise book for the Enterprise WETPAC '78 cruise. I'm in a second picture in the book. The stories above are correct. It was the parts car for Heavy - 1, the Vigilante squadran. And they were being decomisioned upon return to CONUS. It was a POS so none of the other squadrans would buy it. This idea was thought up where all good ideas are thought up - in the Subic Bay O club. When this pic came out with the terrorist quote, I was able to hook up on line with the then LTJG who thought it up and sold it to the Big E skipper, after everone else in the chain of comand said no. The Skipper said do it! What Balls.

"In spite of all the "I was there" info on the type of car, none of the above is totallt correct. It was a 1963 Plymouth Savoy, as identifiable from this pic:

Chance-Vought A-7 Corsair II's, to be exact! ("Corsair II" since the first Corsair was the F4U WWII-era bird. Actually, there was a Vought Corsair biplane in the '30s but we'll leave that for another time!)
Since he's shooting aircraft carriers they're probably Navy birds but the USAF used A-7s as well.
I got my "good eye" watching planes as a kid and it came in handy later on when I was a KC-135 tanker pilot and had to spot those dudes way out as they approached for a refill. (I wasn't a C-student for no reason! Had my nose buried in airplane books and car magazines.)

The story I heard on this one was that the pilot had set his altimeter for Nellis AFB, the Thunderbirds' home base, instead of Mountain Home AFB, ID, where this crash occurred. The difference in airfield elevation between Nellis and Mountain Home is significant and by the time the pilot realized his error he was about to hit the ground. He was performing the back-half of a low-altitude loop (basically) and he rolled-over and pulled toward the ground at too low an altitude. He realized he did not have sufficient altitude to complete the loop and correctly ejected about two seconds before the jet hit the ground. The photo shows the jet with its nose "up" but it's actually "mushing" toward the ground in a near-stalled condition. The pilot tried to pull hard enough to avoid impact but saw that it was hopeless. I have the cockpit video and I'll try to attach it--it's pretty spectacular. Oh, and his 'chute deployed just before he hit the ground and he jumped up and made a "touchdown" gesture to the crowd, who all cheered at his survival. Needless to say, he was removed from the Thunderbirds and put on ground duty at the Pentagon--I think I had heard he was a general's son but I'm not sure. As British pilots would say in the old days: bad show!

Sunrise, December 1944, somewhere in England. Crews look eastward at the contrails from the bomber stream and its escort fighters as they head east to bomb Germany. Try to imagine what all those piston engines sounded like up high heading for Germany. Few of those boys were older than 25. That's a P-51D Mustang.

Here's what some 23 year-olds were doing in 1945. That's Major Pierce McKennon warming up his P-51D "Ridge Runner" at Debden air base in England, March 1945. McKennon was KIA soon after this photo was taken. Mirrors atop windscreen were "borrowed" from an RAF Spitfire.

Back in the 1969-70 period this P-51D used to buzz the east bay (San Francisco) hills where I grew up. We called it the "maroon and gold" Mustang. My dad's buddy took these photos at the 1970 Watsonville (California) airshow. The airplane was owned by George Perez and I think he still has it.

Another common site in the SF east bay in the 1960s and early 70s were fire supression airplanes like this Grumman F7F Tigercat. Summer always brought with it the sound of rumbling radial engines and the F7F was the hottest hot rod in the air tanker fleet. I would blow the screen door off its hinges when a Tigercat went over the house. They were based at Santa Rosa and a few other bases in California. One of the surviving F7Fs participates at the Reno Air Races and it's a real crowd pleaser.

Another SF bay area aviation landmark in the old days was Hamilton AFB in Marin County, north of San Francisco. Hamilton was the first base to operate the Lockheed F-104A "Starfighter" interceptor and it too was the hottest of the hot rods. It was called "the missile with a man in it." Hamilton's 83rd Fighter Interceptor Squadron flew the 104 between late 1957 and mid 1960. My buddy George Davis flew 104s in the 83rd and sent me this photo of four 83rd 104s over the Golden Gate in 1958.

I believe this was not the first mishap like this. Didn't the T-Birds lose all 4 guys in a diamond formation back roll when they all followed the leader into the ground, killing all involved? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif
I think that this was during a practice session, and the Air Force suspended the program for a few years until they sorted it all out. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Correct Andy. The Thunderbird four-ship main formation flew their T-38 Talons into the ground during a practice in January of 1982, killing all four pilots. The skinny on that one was that the formation leader initiated the loop with insufficient altitude to pull out at the bottom and they all went in. The USAF concocted a story about a system malfuncion in the leader's T-38 but it has been soundly refuted, unofficially. The reason the other three followed their leader into the ground is because they keep their eyes glued on lead's airplane and they're used to ground rush so they dutifully followed him in. The leader didn't make a warning radio call to his formation probably because he had both hands on the stick and was pulling with all his might to avoid ground impact. The other three probably felt the G-load build up over what they were used to (as lead pulled for his life) and probably saw the impact coming at the last second but it was too late.

families of the pilots asked the media not to ever show it

If you want to see and hear a B-36 in flight, get a copy of the 1955 movie "Strategic Air Command" with Jimmy Stewart.
Here's an early B-36B with arctic red markings. Six 4,360 cubic-inch 28 cylinder radial engines. Four rows of seven cylinders in each engine, 56 spark plugs per engine. Incidentally, the B-36 was considered to be overpowered, even before the twin-jet pods were added to the outboard wings. (This one does not have the jet pods.)

Here's the one-and-only cargo version, the XC-99, landing at San Diego in early 1948. This airplane still exists at the former Kelly AFB in San Antonio. One of the C-99's original main wheels, seen here before conversion to multiple-wheeled main gear, is on display at the USAF Museum at Dayton and it is over six feet in diameter.

If you are into aircraft - old and new - and get to Reading Pa in June - this is a show you won't want to miss.
Besides dozens of WW II aircraft there are military planes from the Viet Nam era through today's modern ships.
You can even get a ride on B-17 Flying Fortresses!
I have attended this several times and it has been great - unfortunately due to my sons AAU Basketball commitments I have not made it to the last couple of shows - but friends told me last years show was massive.

I didn't know you enjoyed warbirds. Been my hidden desire since I first took a ride when I was 13 as a student pilot. I was going to enter either the aviation industry or healthcare when I was in high school, I chose the later. Wonder what would have happened if I had done the other? Here is what I think I would have ended up with instead of an old racecar. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Bill,
I am not positive on the "Ole Gray Mare" TB-25J as I was not given a list of names by my brother and was only going on sight and features of that airplane. The other three are for sures however. I also failed to mention (I think) the T-6 in the middle. Can't tell for sure if that is what it is.
Ken,
My passion for Warbirds is only one notch below the musclecars and that is only because they are way more expensive and not as easy to partake in. I grew up in a warbird household and flew 10 times more in Warbirds then I flew commercially by the time I was 20. I also helped the CAF restore the P-51C Red Tail several years ago before it crashed and that was 100% volunteer. When I was 15 my father was considering purchasing a P-51D for around $50k (if I recall). For what reason I have no idea as he certainly did not have the money to maintain or fly it. Incidently, they are now well over $1m!

That is neat, hope to see that '51 in the air again sometime. I've got a buddy up at MaryJane that is restoring the A25 for the USAF museum. I'm a 1/2 owner of a BT13 project, that I hope soon will be taking up alot of my time.

I just called my brother in Phoenix. It is in fact "Ole Gray Mare" and is there for fabric recovering on all it's appendages. The "T-6" is actually an SNJ (similar). He also stated that of the 5 aircraft on the apron, he rewired 3 of them. Interestingly enough when I called him he was sitting in the cockpit of a Mig-17 replacing the transponder amongst other things.

Ken,
I am pretty sure the P51C Red Tail is reaching completion on the re-restoration after the crash and death of Don Hinz.

Rick, here's the former "Dream Lover" that I confused with the B-25 your brother works on. "Dream Lover" is now named "Old Glory" and is still based at Stockton.
