Shelby GT500 buyers ready to pay more than sticker

Even though Ford has yet to announce prices for the much anticipated 2007 Shelby Cobra GT500, buyers have already told others they are willing to pay a minimum of $20,000 above the expected $40,000 sticker price.
The Shelby Cobra GT500 is a new supercharged version of the very popular Ford Mustang, but with a 500hp engine under the hood, the most powerful engine in Mustang history.
Ford stands to make some money as there are about 8,000 expected to be built, certainly not collectible by any means. People soon forget what happened to the 6,052 Pace Car replica Corvettes built in 1978, when buyers were paying big premiums over the roughly $13,000 sticker. They never took off as expected, but do sell in the $25,000 range today—that’s after nearly 30 years of careful storage, which costs money.
We heard one Internet auction has already listed a 2007 Shelby at $99,999. One potential customer is willing to pay $65,000 for the car. The first Shelby GT500s were expected to begin arriving at the end of May at most dealerships, which expect to get only one to two cars each.
In Binghamton, New York, one buyer went into a local Ford dealership shortly after the car was announced in April 2005, with a check for $1,000 for the right to buy a GT500 for sticker price whenever the car became available. The check was refused.
Buyers willing to pay $20,000 or more are trying to get the first ones off the assembly line. Historically, those built in the first few days of production are more valuable over time, said John Aguire, Ford's brand manager. He added that once Ford sets a sticker price, there is no control over how much money dealers can get for the “instant” collectible.
