View Full Version : OK - Why does GM show a 1969 Camaro for 1970?

I was on the GM Photostore website today and I came across
an image of a 1970 SS Camaro. I was somewhat shocked so I
thought I would share the link with you. Unfortunately, I
can't post the images from that site as GM owns them.

What's so odd is that the model is a 1969 with a 1970 front
license plate tag. Obviously, this was a pre-strike photo.
However, the car has N/66 wheels on it!

N/66 wheels were discontinued in about November of 1968 as
I recall. So, how did they end up on a 1970 model photo?

God! That car is beautiful! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/Can-I-Have-It.gif

1970 Camaro? (http://www.gmphotostore.com/prodinfo.asp?number=53217381)

There are also two engine images I think many of the big
block guys will get a tickle out of!

Porcupine (http://www.gmphotostore.com/prodinfo.asp?number=53217266)

L/71 (http://www.gmphotostore.com/prodinfo.asp?number=53217953)

My L/71 doesn't look that dolled up? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

The 69 Camaro was an extended run and was built way past the normal July date for re-tooling. The 70 1/2 Camaro was delayed so the early ads show 69 Camaros...BKH

Hey Brian!

I was just surprised that GM would use what obviously
appears to be a picture of a car built in early 1969 for
a 1970 product introduction. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Yeah, it is sort of weird seeing that 69 Camaro parked next to the 70 Chevelle. I would imagine most of general public would not even notice or care for that matter...BKH http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

That was typical of Chevrolet to continue to show the 1969 Camaro among the new 1970 vehicles.I agree having a Camaro w/the early issued Magnum 500 wheels is unusual, but they did recycle pictures quite frequently when possible to keep costs down.
They repeated this theme throughout much of the 1970 literature like Press kits,Com. Kits and Magazine ads..
I personally think these two car designs accent eachother quite well for posterity.

It's this information that has a lot of people thinking the 1970 Camaros are called 70-1/2. A lot of people think the "early" 70 Camaros had the 69 body style still. But they are all 69's with 69 VINs.

But the bodynumbers started all over again, in August 1969 I believe. So there should be early and late 1969 Camaroīs with the same bodynumber, but with early and late VINīs.

Much like my initial post, this advertisement also gets
my attention. Look closer at the 1970, err 1969 Camaro.
What do you see? I see the extended D/90 lower stripes
only found on early 69 build cars. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

The Chevelle is also sporting Polyglas Tires. Did '70 Chevelles come with them?

Yes,that was one of the possibilities Keith.

I've always liked this ad Nathan posted because it shows the 70 SS Chevelle,(hard to see it on this particular picture),with the sides painted red body color on it's Cowl Induction hood flapper.
Even though the final product didn't come that way from the mass produced Assembly line.

I think at the time GM had to go to press with it's model year advertising and grabbed the first '69 they found for the shot. As stated, who would care back in '69...

Other than a few of us here, who would care in 2006 for the matter? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif
