Challenger makes a comeback
Muscle cars are back! Well, they have been for some time, but a revered name is making a return in calendar year 2008.
The Dodge Challenger, silenced for more than 30 years, is making a triumphant return to the U.S. car market. A prototype was unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in two-door, four-seat form. Based on the wildly successful Chrysler 300C, the new Challenger is somewhat larger than the original.
The original Dodge Challenger, built from 1970 through the 1974 model year, was one of the most feared street cars of the early 1970s with an array of engines from the single four-barrel 383-cu.in. V-8 all the way up to the 426 Hemi. The Dodge Challenger also came in a one-year-only model called the Challenger T/A, which was powered by a small-block 340-cu.in. with a trio of Holley two-barrel carburetors.
Whether the new Challenger will be built like the prototype is anyone’s guess. The prototype has twin hood scoops, a 6.1-liter Hemi engine and six-speed shifter with Pistol Grip handle, just like the 1970 model. The tailpipe extensions on the prototype also look similar to the dual split box style back in the day.
