Is that the one that Crane's Corvette's is selling?

from what I have been told by the experts, the "7" should be a fat/stretched out at the top "7" which that one is, looks real to me, you can check the date with the experts as the 837's were only made in a few batch runs and all the batch dates are known/available.SULLY

You can also send photo to John Pirkle down in South Carolina..he does restos on alternators, starters, etc. and is very knowledgable about originality. He is also an NCRS judge...nice guy and honest!! www.johnpirkle.com (http://www.johnpirkle.com)

Pirkle is your guy.....
The backside is a later housing, and the pulley is wrong.
Stamping looks very good, but you never know anymore these days.

There are a lot of blank housings floating around.
Stamping looks exactly right to me (maybe even too nice) - but I wouldn't bet my money on it, without confirming with an expert.

Since the 837s were used on Z's as well as L78/L72, that amounts to 24,000+/- alternators. Why were they only built in a few batches?

I would guess that it is more efficient and cost effective to produce alternators in high quantity and fewer batches than to have an assembly line for each different alternator and produce each one every day. When Chevrolet ordered more 837's, Delco made that specific quantity. Just my two cents.

24,000 alternators does sound like alot BUT in the grand scheme of things...it is probably only a few days of production for the whole year, if that.
Which explains why there are certain known dates... same with the 499 and 480 distributors.

I have an 837 and a 499 that I thought were not restamps. I'm sure no one wants to release the known dates, and I don't blame them. However can someone who has the list PM me and I will get the dates off mine and submit them to him. That way I can know if mine are in fact unrestamped.

Apparently it was real.... "427-king" is now selling the alternator, but this time with a $1400 price tag.
