I originally was not looking for this car, but instead I was looking for a ’70 442 W-30 (I was looking for a car that was as old as I was!). I picked up my July ’95 issue of Hemmings and saw the ad for a ’69 Hurst/ Olds in the same area code as I was living in.

I called to see if I could look at it. That weekend, I jumped in the truck and headed to Kansas City to take a look. Armed with decode books, I looked over the entire car and saw a complete, low mileage (24K), original paint ’69 H/O that needed some TLC. The car was from north Texas and the only rust was a small patch at the bottom of the driver’s fender. The passenger fender needed alignment (I later found out that the fender was from a different ’69 Hurst), the paint was cooked and faded, but the interior was in remarkably good shape.

We talked and I said that I would get back with him. I called my Uncle up and he said, “Cool!” I contacted the bank and they said that they would write a loan for the car. I called my Mom (Yes, I was 25 and still seeking my parents approval) and she said, “What the he!! do you need a car like that for?” That scared me away for a couple of months, but then I called the seller up again. He said that he had a cash deposit on the car from a gentleman in Carolina. I said that if the deal fell through, to keep me in mind. The beginning of October came around and I received a call from the seller. He stated that the gentlemen from Carolina flew in and saw that the car needed a paint job and let the car go. I quickly got in contact with the bank and they said that they would still write the loan. I then called my Uncle up and he met me in Kansas City with his car trailer. We left the trailer in another lot and went to look at the car. My Uncle gave me thumbs up on the car so the deal was made and the car was loaded up.

Twenty-two months later, my car was on its way from Abilene, KS to Lansing, MI for the 100th anniversary of Oldsmobile (its first show!) Since that time, the car has been on trips from Kansas City to Dallas, Denver, Detroit, and St. Louis (SCR7). In September of 2004, the car was driven to Stanton, MI for the ‘Pure Stock Musclecar Drag Race’. The car made the 1500 mile round trip and raced for 2 days with the only mechanical glitch being heat soak on the starter. The car currently has 45,000 miles and has run a best time of 13.28 @ 102.5. Not bad for 4200# and 3.23 gears!

nice car you don't see many of them around. A guy not far from me has a collection of Hurst cars just like yours. I think he has 4 all in different body styles. But he doesn't drive them, they just sit in his garage. He also bought everyone new he was a mechanic at an old's dealership. Enjoy your car!

This car is gorgeous and fast. Getting a more serious gear in it this year, would love to see it be the first Pure Stocker in the 12's. Way to go Rusty! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

Hey Pete,

I forgot to mention that MOM was passenger on that run from Abilene to Lansing. I guess that was how I was able to get 15 mpg out of the car during that ride. (Don't you think you are going too fast!!!!) I blame it on her side of the family anyway for having the car bug! My great grandfather was a horse trader and my grandfather was into fast cars (of course they were Oldsmobiles!!) He had a '64 Starfire that he dusted several Mustangs with off the stoplight and he said that he outran a duststorm in Arizona. My uncle and his friend worked out several 63-64 Impala SS 409 cars then played with several mid year Corvettes. I still remember the 'test drive' that my uncle gave my brother and myself in a '63 409 car. He worked the pedal through both carbs and it seemed that the nose of the car was reaching for the sky!

I could have followed my other grandfather and followed MOPAR! The ride home from the hospital was in a '68 Barracuda and Grandpa had a '64 Sport Fury in the garage at one point in his life.

Having taken a few rides in Rusty's car, a 1/4 mile at a time, I can verify those time slips. Rusty's Hurst is one nice ride!

Somebody needs to get Rusty's version of the fertilizer spreaders' demise posted....... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

OK, you shamed me into it. Just before going to SCR7, I noticed a crack in the oilpan! Drained the oil and tried to patch with JB Weld. Worked great until the oil heated up to full operating temp and then it started leaking again. I had the pan welded after SCR7 and made the trek to Staton, MI for the Pure Stock meet. After I got home, I tried every way imaginable to pull the pan without pulling the engine. After goofing with it all winter, I bit the bullet and pulled the motor. Garage tip # 72: If you are going to pull a motor, have the nose of the car in the garage. I did not follow this garage tip so, the car had to roll forward so that the cherry picker could clear the door. The motor and trans were pulled as a unit (only problem was the pan was already loose and we had to get it out of the way without crushing it). So the motor was out, but I had to get it back in the garage to be out of the weather. Garage tip #108: Loaded cherry pickers do not like uneven surfaces. My neighbor shows up and helps me in trying to get the cherry picker in the garage. The 1" lip in the garage floor does not help the situation and with 3 of the 4 wheels on the garage floor, the lift starts to tip over sideways with a 455 Olds (no oil pan on the bottom) and Turbo 400 on the end of the hook!! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif Everything was going in slow motion as I saw very bad things coming. Good news was that my neighbor and I were both unhurt, bad news was that my fertilizer spreader would never be the same. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif As the motor tipped over, the bottom end of the motor landed in the fertilizer spreader and spared any cracked blocks or bent cranks. All that was bent was the oil pickup tube and a corner of the tranny pan. And yes, the fertilizer spreader is still in use today! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Bruce,

Sorry I did not put any racing pics in. Here is one that I love! http://usera.imagecave.com/smallhurst/Rustyracer.jpg http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

Boy, they'll let anyone's ride on here I guess! LOL!! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Talk about b@lls, this guy drove his H/O over 700 miles *one way* to thrash on it for 2 days at the race track, just to turn back around and drive it home! Now that's *Show-Me* style, baby! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/headbang.gif

Get those 3.91s in, Rusty, and start rubbin' on that thing for 12s...

Cool car and story http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif. Won't be surprised to see it knocking on the 12's door. You going to park next to the Remlinger's again this year at Stanton? They put on quite a feast for us to mooch from.
