With regret, I have decided to sell my 1968 Norwood built Z/28 which currently has approx. 24,000 original, documented miles. Lemans Blue with standard blue interior no console. Interior is one of the nicest originals I’ve seen, belts, headliner, seats and carpet (some fading on the carpet but still nice for almost 40 years old). Engine was gone through in 2002 with the entire rotating assembly being replaced to include an NOS 1176 crank, Eagle SIR “I” beam rods, NOS .020 oversize 11:1 pistons. The heads are the correct 291 castings with 2.02 int and 1.60 exh. using Manley “Severe Duty” SS valves, guide plates, screw-in studs and Comp Cams roller tip rockers. A new 30/30 cam was installed. The original owner drag raced this car for a while but it still retains it’s original block with splayed main caps (long story, but in a nutshell, 90 + percent of the racing was done with a 350, I have a letter from the original owner with the whole story). The entire rotating assembly was balanced. All engine work done by well respected engine guy south of Detroit, Dave Petit. The car runs great and sounds like it should.
Without getting into all of the part numbers and dates, the only parts that are questionable is the distributor (done to perfection by Jerry MacNeish) and it has a January date for a second week of May car. I was going to change it to a closer date until I was at the Camaro Nats at the GM Tech Center a few years ago and another pretty original 68 Z was there with a January date distributor and built within 200 vehicles of mine. Carb, Alternator, starter (starter, voltage regulator and alternator done by John Pirkle, carb done by Bob Kuntz), all match build of vehicle. Another part is the cylinder heads which are definitely wrong with “67” dates and finally the water pump and horn relay is not matching. Everything else matches, even the fan clutch, radiator (correct tanks and brackets, no UH tag however). The M21 trans is original, all casting sections match, rear end matches, center section, tubes (I don’t think the rear brakes have ever been done). Missing parts are the exhaust manifolds (I put Hooker ceramic coated Super Comps on it) and the smog equipment. The original Muncie shifter mechanism is missing but the Muncie lever is actually attached to a Hurst Comp Plus mechanism, which looks totally stock without the Muncie clumsiness.
The body is in excellent condition. Doors close solid, gaps are all pretty nice. Body repainted in late “80s” and has some flaws that I would categorize as normal for almost 20 year old paint. The car looks good and presents very nicely. Glass is all very nice and matches including windshield. The only questionable piece is the backlight which is a late 67 date. This is a non-spoiler car which the last owner added both a front and rear spoiler. Wheels are all date matched and are DF coded wearing repop Goodyear Widetreads. Trim rings are repops and look very good. I have the original trim rings but they need work.
When I went through the engine, I also had the brake booster replated and rebuilt by Jerry MacNeish and he also “re-skinned my intake. Both pieces look as new.
The factory installed options on this car are:
RPO Z21 – Style Trim
RPO J52 – Power Disc Brakes
