Any 1970 l78 with turbo 400 experts out there.Should a 396 375 l78 with a build date of November 1969 and a turbo 400 have a dual snorkel air cleaner or an open element air cleaner with a vent tube pointed towards the distributor?Any help would be appreciated. The car currently has an open air cleaner with a vent tube that a previous owner sawed off.thanks bob
Whether it's a Nova,Camaro or Chevelle, and assuming it doesn't have Cowl Induction on the later two,I think an open element is correct.

Thanks Rick. You are the professor! That"s what my research has also shown.I think they started installing the dual snorkel sometime in February 1970.Bob http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/scholar.gif

It's my opinion that ALL the 1970 Camaros came with the one year only dual snorkel............starting 3rd week of Jan build (do you have trim tag showing earlier???)

I think all L78 Novas had the open element air cleaner.
I believe the Camaro and chevelle lines were the only ones to use snorkels on L78.
The (camaro style) snorkel aircleaner was used in Nova copo and yenko LT-1 applications...probably because the engines were pulled from the Camaro engine stock.

'70 L78 Novas could also receive the dual 'long' snorkel air cleaner, the short snorkel a/c was COPO Nova only.

Marlin, Any info on the changeover date on 1970
Nova L-78's from Open Element (ala 1969) to the one year only Camaro style long dual snorkel. I've had a knowledgeable person
speculate that the change was Jan 1st due to "new" anti-noise regulations.......

My 70 L78 nova had the duel snorkle long snout. It was a late build. Apr, or May I think.

I had the L78 ordered for a long time. Didn't show up until June. Had about 5k on it when we met a bridge. Took the insurance money, borrowed some, and bought the deuce. My insurance actually went down because it was a non SS plain ole 350. Don was right. They were insurance beaters. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I didn't buy the deuce until April of 71, so no, I didn't actually buy both in 70.
I've always believed the Dual Snorkle air cleaner was first destined for the 1970 LS-6 Corvette.
Once it was realized there would be no 1970 LS-6 Corvette, and it would be a later release date,
Chevrolet put the backlogged stock of these air cleaners on all the Aluminum intaked newly styled
L-78 Camaros,some of the remaining L-78 Novas & LS-6 Chevelles.From what I've seen,it seems
the cars originally equipped with them have their build dates fall between Jan.-July 1970 supporting this.
Has anyone seen proof of one on a vehicle earlier then Jan.70?

How about looking at it from a different point of view. Would all CKO stamped engines receive the dual snorkel air cleaner? Because the CKO was destined to go in Chevelles, Camaros and Nova's would the assembled engines be sitting with the air cleaner's already installed waiting for a car to go in? My L78 Camaro was built in Jan of 70 but the motor is late Oct. Would they have changed out the air cleaner on a motor that sat around for almost 3 months?
I believe air cleaners were the final dressing,so they wouldn't be sitting on engines early on.
Added on after the carburetor, which was not put on until after the engine was assigned to a body sequence number.
Aside from the Camaro, not every CKO engine received them.
And TH400 vehicles also recieved the Dual, stamped CTY for Novas and CRR for LS-6 Chevelles.

... Interesting.. I had always assumed engines were complete carb (air cleaner)to pan, but since there are instructions in the assembly manual for carb installation, that makes sense.. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Also back to the air cleaner in the nova, I was going on what I'd seen on cars, and I've never seen any L78 nova pics or cars with anything other than an open element
cleaner. does anyone have any photos? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

We believe the change over occured in Jan of '70, along with many other changes to the Novas.
