Hi guys, i am looking for any history on this car, it was made into a drag car very early in its life and raced in mid michigan and also street driven and shown, i have found dash plates inside from the detroit auto rama and also grand rapids. also found a milan dragway champion sign. the car has no rust but the rear is opened for big tires. all of the original drivetrain is still there, interior is perfect red fender liners and air scoops are there, what i am saying is the car is complete.28.000 miles just wondering how it should be fixed? as a drag car or stock? i will post some new pictures asap, i have 1 vintage photo of it. any input would be great thanks Rich

Welcome to the site Rich,
Not sure where the value is either restored stock or as a race car but certainly way cooler as a race car.
Seems like I remember a magazine article on that car from back then as well. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

When i met this guy, i purchased a 1969 hurst from him he had owned since 70 that car has 40,000 miles with its original bald tires but a very nice original car never altered or abused. then he told me of this race car, he took this car apart in 1976 to freshen the paint and never put it back together, he did go to the dealer and buy all new trim and a new hood for the car because of a small dent in it, this guy really took care of his stuff, the 68 has a b title and he says he bought it as a race car in 1972. he lived in muskegon his whole life.

Wow. I've heard of this car, but don't know a lot about it. Casey may as he has a lot of old memorabilia stuff from back then as his Uncle Jack was active with a lot of these gyus.
There's a lot of old race cars tucked away all over this area that surface every now and then. One of my old bosses at Ford Engineering, Don McElroy, still has two of his in a pole barn in Fenton. Been there for 25 years. Friend of Bob Karkashian and Mike Dellahanty and drove NHRA Stock Eliminator cars for Jac McCormack for years. Both are Mopars, I think. One for sure. His 318 Duster (M Stock?) ran in the 10's.
I think the car is definitely worth more as a race car, but I would contact the Hurst Olds Club of America (Rusty Small can help here) as they have a Hurst Registry and I think know the VINS of every real one. If it is in fact a real one (and I'll bet it is), it's worth a fortune anyway you cut. There are a few other 68 Hurst Race cars going back together right now. The Chesrown Olds (Ron Garey) car is in Southern Ohio, and the Rem Ram Olds is somewhere in Western Michigan also.

Look on the Hurst/Olds Club of America website (www.hurstolds.com)and get hold of Karl Sarpolis ('68 H/O Advisor). He has the list of VIN's and can help you out. I am sure that he wants to learn about this car and its condition. PM me with your phone number and I will give you a call.
Another '68 H/O race car that is going back together (as chronicled by a thread here) is the Russ Dunmire race car. It had already had a top notch resto done, but managed to imitate a barrel and rolled. I could not believe how good it is coming out of that wreck! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

Thanks for your help russell, I am very sure it is an original hurst, for one the engine is the numberas match 455 and the wood on the dash, and all of the other ho parts that the car retains the trunk lid is black top and bottom (it still has the original paint on it) my first thought was to keep this car a drag car, just looking to find some history on it. I will be posting some pictures on sunday, Rich

Cool car with neat history. And with the original motor it makes for a tough car to restore back to original or race condition. I would lean towards race condition since it could always be put back to original later on if you wanted. But it really comes down to how you plan on using the car.

Trim tag will have Z-Z paint code too.
You should at least conact Karl Sarpolis (H/O Club) to get the car on his 68 H/O registry if it is not already accounted for.
Restore it how you will enjoy it most. I personally think there is more of a "market" for the original condition car if selling it is the idea.
These cars are so cool because not many people have ever seen one or heard of them for that matter.

I say leave it in *as raced* trim...there are enough restored examples already out there...

I second that! Much more unique if restored as raced. Smaller market if you are looking to sell it but much more interesting if you are going to hang on to it. My $.02

Amen to that. Restore it to the as raced condition when it was new, though. Many of these got chopped up after they went to the second or third owners and beat on every Friday and Saturday night. The way the dealers set them up for racing (with a lot of inside help from Olds Engineering) doesn't hurt the value at all and in fact, may increase it without going the Bloomington resto path.

the car is in such great condition, i am going to put it back together as a race/street car and just repaint it, the interior is perfect and needs nothing, i have way to many projects going at this point to go any further than that, But if the car doesnt have a significant race history i agree it should be restored.

i would go with the raced version. cars like Hurst SC/ramblers, Olds, and Ralleye Olds didnt have additional options to differentriate them from other cars. this car has personality as a racecar.

My first call came up empty Rich. Rich Powers doesn't recall the car. Sorry. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif I've still got two more in "inventory" to follow up with.

My second call looks to be more fruitful. My buddy does recall the car. He thinks that is one of seven that were sold from the same dealership in the SE Michigan area. If you PM me the S/N, we can nail down the dealership it was sold out of.

Hey Casey,
I couldn't believe it when I saw your sig. I saw Ennis' Menace run at a WCS points meet in Sioux City, IA in 69. I think it was running D/S. There was another 68 Biscayne at the same meet called the "Union Jack" I wish I had some pics. Woh raced the Ennis car and where were they from? Frank Payne

Not to derail the original thread, but ...... COOL ! The "Ennis" car that I now own was originally out of Sioux Falls, SD, so I'm sure we're talking about the same one. Butternut yellow with chrome door surround trim (kinda different on a Biscayne). I'm betting that the "Union Jack" Biscayne was a like-optioned L72 car that was silver/gray.....also from the Sioux Falls area ???? Fortunately for me, we were able to hook up with the original owner, Ennis, on our way back from Alaska a couple of months ago. Plenty of cool stories, but not a single dern picture. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif Do you remember a Hemi Cuda called the "Hair Bender" from the same area ?

Apologies for stealing the thread. Casey, I think you are right about the Union Jack. I can't remember the guys name but I think the car was that silver grey color. The Hairbender was Jim Schlotman sp? out of Sioux Falls he ran Mopars. Before the Cuda he had an R029 GTX SS/DA car that he did real well with. He was sponsored by Stewart's School of Hair Styling hence the Hairbender name. I loved to watch those L72 Biscaynes run. I knew a guy named Duane Blair that lived here in Omaha and ran a 66 Biscayne called "Budman". I guess he liked to drink a lot. Seems to me as the Ennis car and the Jack car were running 12.20s at the meet I saw them at. That was pretty stout for D/S in 69. Frank

VERY cool Frank !! Here's a shot of the car when I had at the SCR in '04. It is about 60-70% or so original paint. The sides were lightly "dusted" to get rid of the shadowing of the lettering, etc. in the early 80's.

Ask and yee shall receive .... (at least some info).
This car used to be raced by Mike Sullivan out of Muskegon, Michigan. He was directly supported with parts from Oldsmobile's big race "gun", by the name of Dale Smith. Dale was essentially "the man" when it came to supporting Olds racing thru Engineering, etc.
As the story goes ..... Mike got into some bad relationships on the East side of Michigan and wound up getting killed. This was around '72-'73. Everything was hush-hush, and the Hurst just kinda disappeared.
Can you fill in any blanks from there Rich ??
YES - I did get the VIN. Still working on that one ...... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

HemiBee,
I'm sorry for dragging up such an old post, but have you made progress on the 1968 Hurst/Olds - <span style="font-weight: bold">QUICKSILVER</span>? I have the <span style="font-weight: bold">Rem</span> <span style="font-weight: bold">Ram</span> 1968 Hurst/Olds that was sponsored by Row Motors and Rem Die Casting in Grand Rapids, MI. I think we live near each other. If you still have QUICKSILVER, I would love to see it.
Best wishes,
MickeyD
