OK, new to the drag racing stuff. Someone a while ago posted about items needed to race at the reunion. Is there a "required" tech list to race..other than a helmet and a car http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif. I'm starting to gather my stuff and finish prepping the car..I can't wait!.. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif I'm like Flounder from Animal House " Oh Boy is this great"!!!!
Thanks

Over flow tank, long pants, helmet, 2 return springs on your carb. The rest is mainly common sense stuff like making sure you have all the lug nuts and they are tight, no big fluid leaks etc..... You can use your windshield washer bottle for the overflow tank by just running a hose from the radiator to it.

Rob/Tom...can you help us out here please....I can't remember what the time cut-off is for helmets. All I know is that I didn't get anywhere near!!!!! Seems like it was a 12 sec run or under that would require a helemt? Or was it 14 secs? In any case, I will have an extra helemt for any who might need it.

Al, A lot of people here in AZ use sweat pants over their shorts while racing. That way...they can come off fast at the end of the run... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

A,
As I recall from last year, anyone running UNDER 14.00 needs a helmet.
Can't speak for you Curly, but I'm pretty sure I'm safe! (However, the Vintage Bell 500 is in the trailer)

Looks like everyone hit the high points...

13.99 and quicker means a helmet is *required*, but we encourage EVERYONE who makes a pass to wear one...cheap insurance if you ask me...

No shorts, gotta have pants...ask Dave H about getting tossed for that...sweat pants is an easy fix, just don't expect any cat calls from the gallery...

No open toed shoes...this means no sandles...cowboy boots or velcro shoes are optional...

Shirts with sleeves are required...no tank tops, cut off shirts, half shirts, or whatever...short sleeves are fine, a light shirt with long sleeves so we can easily see 'em in the lanes is better (I get tossed over my sleeveless shirt at least once a season!)...

Seat belts...that's a no brainer.

Overflow tank...we would really like to see everyone with an overflow tank, but if you're just gonna make a few easy passes then we can probably let it go a couple times...but for you hot-lappers out there, it would be nice to see a catch-can of some kind...as Clill said above, I simply run a piece of hose from the rad overflow to my washer bottle...also, we've used cans/bottles and such in a pinch...it doesn't have to be permanent, that way you can take it off for the eye candy folks on Saturday...

2, count 'em "2", return springs...just stop by an auto parts store and grab a cheap throttle return spring and put it over the original...I've seen what happens when this goes awry, and a spring is an easy on/off safety net...

Common sense stuff...lugnuts tight, brakes working, not puking fluid out, no fuel leaks...it's gonna be your butt driving the thing, but don't get stupid by getting lazy...

Like someone said above, go *around* the water box, then back up and do a dry burnout...unless you're one of the more serious guys with some tire under the car, then the water is just gonna make getting the car off the line a chore...

Do me a favor, and take it easy on the "go pedal" in the pits...seems like each year I take a butt chewing from the track folks about someone doing burnouts or hot rodding through the pits...if you're gonna play, play on the track...

You'll also need to fill out a brief tech card...I'll be handing these out, but everyone will need to fill one out...if I don't find you, then FIND ME...look by the BIG black trailer...also, we're gonna be looking at doing an informal, and more importantly laid back, bracket race...it's not gonna filled with ringers, so don't worry if it's new to ya...but in a bracket race *everyone* has a chance to win, regardless of whether it's an 11 second ride or a 16 second ride...we'll walk everyone through it, but it will be later in the day...

Now, with all that said, DO NOT LET ANY OF THE ABOVE DISCOURAGE YOU FROM RACING! If you forget something, or have a question, or have never been on/around a track before, PLEASE ASK! Probably just about any shmoe walking by that day would be more than happy to lend a hand, or will at least know where to find someone that will! You won't be alone, as a day at the track isn't second nature to everyone...there's always someone who needs to borrow a helmet, or a spring, or some tools, or whatever...no big deal, just ask! Most importantly, come to HAVE FUN, and things will work themselves out...

New for the track this year.. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/scholar.gif...Driver must weigh over 300 pounds.....that way none of the cars will become airborn and fly......I will be available to take any cars down the track that need a legal driver..... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

No charge!

Rob....a couple things....1. take off the hub caps...seems every year we are chasing someone's caps down the track...2. don't fill the tank full of fuel or make sure your cap seals...for some reason the guys at the start line don't like 110 octane fuel coming out of the tanks. Windows must be rolled up when making a pass. Last but not least.....don't run over the fat guy helping at the start line!

Great! Now we have to allow Annie an additional two hours between rounds to fix what the "helemt" did to her hair! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/haha.gif However, I could not agree with you more. Hitting a wall at 100 mph is not fun let alone without a helmet!

Just an additional note on why you should avoid the water if you don't have slicks: The water gets trapped in the treads, then dribbles out and tracks all the way up to the line. Bad for traction.

Can't believe I forgot this one, but I would give bonus points to those of you with driveshaft loops! Ever seen a car lose a u-joint and do a pole vault? Another memorable experience shared by Dave H...! They make some that bolt to the rear of your tranny's tailshaft, so no welding...

Northstar Dragstrip, MN circa 1978. Vega station wagon with a built 396 gets about 15 feet out of the box and twists the front U-joint off the driveshaft. The shaft falls to the ground, digs in, cartwheels the car in the air to the point that the rear end broke loose from it's mounts rotating upwards to the point where the rear joint now fails. The shaft continues on it's travels and punches a hole in the floor pan and out the rear tailgate. Not a pretty site and good thing he was only getting started down the track. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Gea thanx Ric, maybee that 2 ours wuld be beter spent teeching me how to spel...!

Verne, I have wondered why I was told to drive around the water but wasn't smart enough to ask....now I know. Thank you!

Maurice.....300 lb weight requirement???!!!!!!! That is a boat load of chocolate I am gonna have to eat between now and race day! I promise to not run you over at the start line although I have been told I don't see as well as I used to but I think a certain old goat is just trying to get me to stay home.

On a more serious note, please take Rob's encouragement to heart. Last year was the first time I took a car down the track and it was FANTASTIC! Times don't really matter, being safe and having fun DO matter. I was so nervous I almost had to drop out as my legs were shaking so bad I could hardly keep them on the pedals! Half way through the 1st pass I was hooked! Made two more runs and have been excited about this year ever since. And Rob is right, there are plenty of fellow racers and members more than willing to lend a hand and/or answer any questions. I am sure if Andrew is announcing again this year, he will even walk you up to the start line and give you a few pointers. If he isn't available, I know Big Bad Mo, Tom, Rob and several others will do the same.

See all of you in a few weeks!
A

Annie after reading your post, I've decided this is NOT you they are talking about !! Tell me I'm not wrong

What's a 710?

Yesterday I was having some work done at the car dealer. A blonde woman
came in and asked for a seven-hundred-ten.

They all looked at each other, and one of the mechanics asked, "What is a
seven-hundred-ten?"

She replied, "You know, the little piece in the middle of the engine. I
lost it and need a new one. It had always been there."

The mechanic gave the woman a piece of paper and a pen and asked her to draw
what the piece looked l ike.

She drew a circle and in the middle of it wrote 710. He then took her over
to another car which had the hood up and asked, "Is there a 710 on this
car?"

She pointed and said, "Of course, it's right there."

To those of you new to bracket racing, there will be an iformal crew that will help you with dialins, etc. Best advise, try to get at least 3 good runs in. Dial the time you think you can repeat consistantly. And don't break out.(running faster than your dialin).
Main thing is, everyone has an equal chance of winning. I figure Annie, and Barnhart in the finals, with Annie takin it with a Barnhart breakout. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Also, no electronics, delay boxs, air shifters throttle stops, etc. Jury may be out yet on line locks. Keep it fair, and fun. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif I will bring the shoe polish.
