Buddy of mine is afraid to take the subframe out because he had some people tell him it's a nightmare to re-install correctly and you need an alignment tool of some sort. I've never done it....whats the deal is it a pain or what ?

It is not a pain if you have the proper tool and the chassis manual.
While I didn't pull my sub-frame when I changed the rubber bushings, I did check the sub-frame dims were correct when I was done.
My bushings were shot and I replaced them 1 at a time.

Bob,
The 69 assembly manual shows that you need two pins
( 0.610 diameter - I believe ) to allign the subframe
with the body. I'd be more concerned about the captive
nuts breaking loose. That is the nightmare scenario so
I hear.

1/2" drive socket extentions work well for alignment pins.
Tell him to deviate away from that sissy subframe,and opt for a full perimeter framed car instead!

Subframe removal and install is a piece of cake. I have done this a number of times without any alignment issues.

If the cage nuts look rusty, tack the brackets (nut holder) with a mig prior to taking them off, let em soak in a good oil as well prior to removal

welding the cage nut to the bracket prior to removal just
to be safe? Can you get access to all 4 of the cage nuts
in this manner ( for welding )? It's an interesting point

I have taken apart tons of subframe cars and have NEVER spun the bird cage that holds the nut. If you are concerned soak the bolt down with PB Blaster. Don't worry, be happy..BKH

I also had no problem with my 69 Camaro Subframe, had some help from an experienced suspension guy when taking it apart. He didn't mention any issues, course I never asked either, wasn't aware of it being an issue. My car was in very good condition to start with though.
