I got back into “Muscle Cars” after I got a divorce in 2001 and the Air Force transferred me out to the Phoenix area to a non-flying desk job. All it took was a couple trips to the Pavillions and the muscle car bug bit hard. Along the way my opinion of what is a nice car went up several notches, the cars in Phoenix are incredible as you have seen though Bruce’s pictures. I finally I had a job where I had enough time on my hands and no one holding me back by criticizing my desire to buy an old car and spend lots of money on it . In fact Sam (Mockingbird 182) was encouraging me to go for it at every opportunity. I could get back into something I enjoyed after being married 16 yrs and raising a couple kids. Figured this would be cheaper and more effective than therapy. My first car in high school was a 69 triple black Chevelle SS 4spd with a built 396. After I bought that car I had no money left but kept it going with bailing wire and string, so I knew a little about working on cars. I always regretted selling the car in the late 70’s to attend college, stepping down to a Toyota Corolla was a hard thing to do at 18. I had always wanted a 69 Camaro and went looking for a big block 4spd car.

I couldn’t resist the RS front end and I wasn’t finding any decent big block cars within my budget, so in May of 2002 I went ahead and bought my first bowtie in 24 years.

This particular package was not anything approaching high performance, but it made for a very nice cruiser especially considering the options it came equipped with. The fact that it was a small block 2bbl car probably saved it from some high school kid getting the car and trashing it along the way. My car was a later production model, built the first week of July, 1969. The car was manufactured in Norwood, Ohio and was sold at DeLong, Chevrolet in San Rafael, California. From 1969 until 2002, it resided in California and sported the original black CA plates when I obtained it. The car has resided in Mesa AZ and now Fort Walton Beach, Fl. This time next year I retire and will be moving back out to the Phoenix area.

Not much is known about the owner history. The car was found in Jan 2002 at a garage sale in Quail Valley CA, near San Diego from a lady owner, it had been sitting for 14 or 15 yrs due to a small fire in the drivers power window harness. I have tried contacting the owner several times with no reply. Someday I will show up on her doorstep and show her the car. After the fire the car was parked and sat in a garage, when discovered the hood had been caved in by all the boxes piled on the car. Wish I had some pictures of that day.

Restoration of my RS was started in Oct 2002 and finished in May 2003, I was a little obsessed. I did everything but the paint job. Of course I am still improving it little by little as time goes on. I was tempted to radically change the car but it was such an original car I decided to keep it pretty much the way it was. The only modifications from the original are: front and rear spoilers, cowl hood, DX-1 stripe, aluminum valve covers, pertronics ignition, tachometer and center fuel gauge. I made sure all the changes were reversible in case someone wanted to go back to original.

It was my first muscle car since the 69 Chevelle SS 396 I had in high school. I had no experience other than the basic mechanics I did back in my high school days to keep my Chevelle on the road. I did a lot of research along the way, got a lot of pointers and contacts from members of the Phoenix 1st Generation Camaro Club as well as friends and acquaintances I met during the process. I learned a great deal along the way, the biggest lesson I learned was to start with a good car, you may pay more up front, but it's well worth it.

--------White cars akways get my attention and this one is great. As an aside, I dont think I have ever seen a cowl hooded Camaro with this stripe. You mentioned that you added it and it looks cQQl but can anyone say whether you could or couldnt get this stripe with this optional hood from the factory????..........Bill S

"no one holding me back by criticizing my desire to buy an old car and spend lots of money on it"

I can name that tune in two notes.

"Figured this would be cheaper and more effective than therapy."

The best, and BY FAR the CHEAPEST form of therapy available.

The cowl induction hood was only available on a Copo, Z28 and SS. The DX1 stripe was not available on Z28 or SS cars, but was available on base models and possibly a Copo. So the DX1 stripe was available on this car but not the cowl hood.

I did see an unrestored RS convertible that just happened to be white with the DX-1 stripe and a flat hood on Ebay a few months ago. It was the twin of this car on ebay a few months back, amazingly similar with the exception of the hood and a couple other minor differences, I definitely did a double-take. I just wanted something other than a hockey or Z-28 stripes to break up all the white.

So maybe we're not talking 100% original, still pretty nice. Car, too.

------Dave,,, I hope I didnt come across the wrong way. If I owned your car and had the imagination to think of your stripe I would have done it too. It is in the Camaro family and looks really cQQl going up over the hood bump. Congratulations on the car as well as the good use of your little gray cells on the stripe..........Bill S

olredalert,
No offense taken. The car gets comments every time I drive it. The few changes I made are all ones that can easily be undone. I think I have only seen one other car in person with a DX1 stripe. The car runs and drives great, easily passes the Phoenix emissions and I could drive it from here back to Phoenix without a worry. I wouldn't try that with any of my other cars. This is the only car I brought out here, something to keep me in the game until I get back out where it's dry and rustfree. Don't have any tools to speak of here so needed something reliable. Thanks for the comments, I threw the last photo in for everyone to see if you're paying attention (.)(.) I guess ya'll passed the test.

If I don't pass that test, you might as well nail the coffin lid closed http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif Beautiful car, Dave http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif
