I recently purchased a 'lot' of BB parts and I have been looking up numbers to see what I have (or think I have). Included was a #3885069 Aluminum rectangular port intake, dated '2.8.66'. My books show it for a 1966 427/425 Corvette/passenger car and a 1966 396/375 Chevelle. In the description they ("Chevrolet By The Numbers") refer to three designs...3-hole closed plenum, 2-hole closed plenum and an open plenum. They state that the 3-hole design was used from August,1965 to June 23, 1967. This unit has what I would think is an 'open' plenum which they later state is only used on the L88 application. No machining (that I can detect) has been done to the plenum area....or is it an excellent job of opening up a 3-hole plenum?

So boys...what do I have here?

Thanx in advance for your help.

Rich

I thought I read that the original open plenum would have been cut in a "V" toward the runners, not square cut like the one you show. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

I think that's an original three hole plenum, that somebody machined away to reflect an open plen afterwards.

I believe that one is factory done, not altered later. The open plenums were made from both the 2 and 3 hole plenum intakes. The 2 hole were modified to leave an inch or so of the ribbing of the plenum in the front and back of the intake, while factory 3 hole intakes were modified exactly as you show above,as it was the only way to open the plenum on those . The 069 and 093 were the same intake and many times both casting #s were on the same intake. Other times the 093 was cast over the 069,as in the early L88s. All the 66 dated 093s ive ever had were open plenum identical to yours. The later 198 intakes all had the open plenum[with the 1 inch partial plenum in the front and rear]
