View Full Version : Correct rear axle for 1970 Camaro L78
I am trying to confirm what rear axle ratios could be ordered with the 70 L78. I have been told that one had two gear options and both had to be posi units: a 3.55 (COX code) which was std. and a 4.10. The only 4.10 units I can find in Colvin's book are COO and CRE codes and neither being posi units. Would a COO unit be correct for my car and should it be a posi unit?
The 4:10 units are all posi, and redundant to list them as such so Colvin doesn't.
I agree with your gearing, and think the COO 4:10 posi is correct for your L-78 application.
I think the CRE 4:10 posi is the LT-1 360HP application.

The COO would be correct for the 4.10 posi. My L78 came with the 3.55 posi originally but right now it has a COS housing with the original 3.55 posi setup in it. So I'm also trying to locate an origina COX rear but I need one dated 3rd week of Jan 70 or earlier which will be real tough to find. Someone on the 2nd gen board listed above had a COX rear and I think he told me it was a March rear. I'll forward his contact information when I get home from work.
Thanks guys for your input. Colvin had me confused as he denotes some units as posi so was not sure if that meant that the 4.10's were non-posi since they were not denoted as such.
Thanks Jeff for your help with the COX housing, will look forward to getting the contact info. and can be emailed at

My Z-28 and L-78 both have COO 4.10 posi rears. I've never seen a car with a CRE rear.

The COX 3:55 POSI is the Standard rear for the L78, The COO 4:10 POSI was optional rear.Colvin's book is a little confusing as it does not list the COO as a Locking rear. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif
How is the restoration going Joe?
Mark,
How are you? The resto is starting to pick up speed as I am completing the L78 Nova and just bought a really nice, highly documented and matching #'s LS5 El Camino. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all your help with my camaro, I know my questions drive you crazy.

FYI, The 70 L-78 owners at nastyz28.com are TRYING to put together a registry of ALL known 70 Camaro L-78's. With only 600 having been originally built, WE are very much interested in gathering any and all info on how many remain with and w/o original powertrain.
Please communicate your info to Mike Steitz about ANY 70 L-78 Camaro or owner you know of, at this link

Will register the car ASAP
