My latest insanity:

http://www.yenko.net/photos/data/564/Da_Grump_2.jpg

Vintage Jenkins Competition refrigerator.

Bill thinks he's had it since maybe the 40's and it comes complete with "competitor" stickers back to 1970, a Jenkins Competition custom machined door handle and Bill's signature (top left). I will put a copy of the above picture in the other framed white spot on the right by the handle.

http://www.yenko.net/photos/data/564/Fridge_2.jpg

When we loaded it into the van, an intake gasket fell out the bottom and what we thought was a buildsheet. Upon further review, it was an old handwritten spec sheet for what appears to be gear ratios and other stuff on one of Strickler's cars. I'll try to clean it up a bit and post it. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

And no...you may not have it.

Hey Jeff...very cool! .

As a non-functional unit, wouldn't it be prefect for you 'English guys' who prefer warm beer anyway? .

Seriously, a 'fridge guy should be able to diagnose the problem and if you have trouble finding parts they still run tons of these old streamliners in places like Cuba? .
Also considering how much of a power hog these old units are, a transplant may be something to consider too? .

I'd be careful of sending the unit anywhere for repairs as it may come back looking like new...kind've like getting your original block back w/ a free decking job? .

How 'bout a lift of the bonnett for an inside shot? .

Jeff, cool piece... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif Rob has been drooling over it every since he first saw it.

Here is the one from Don Yenko's basement/gameroom, purchased from Hope Yenko shortly before her move to California. It will be going into our new shop.

Some of Bill's old crew members told me that he had a soda machine in the shop that was actually full of beer. $.25 a can. The fridge was more likely there for visitors, or for cooling wrist pins before assembly...... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif

Kim, some very good questions and I will do my best to answer them.

About 8 years a go I got a call that the fridge was for sale. I made a hurried trip out East, meeting the seller in a Waffle House to finalize the deal. The first order of business was to the research it, looking through old appliance magazines and contacting anyone who knew old refrigerators. As luck would have it, I found a repairman who had actually worked on this unit. I made a special trip to a large appliance show, where this repairman was be reunited with this special refrigerator. Upon inspection, not only did he say is was indeed from Don’s house, but pointed out a couple of things that we had not noticed, such as a scratch on top, done in late ’69 when a friend of Dons sat a large trophy on top. Also on hand was a well known boozier, who we had sample the brew inside. According to him, no doubt a vintage piece, from Don’s house. At that point in time, everyone was convinced it was THE refrigerator from Don’s house.

For the past several years, I have displayed the refrigerator at several major appliance shows, with some of the folks mentioned above on hand. Several articles have been written about it, including in “Vintage Appliances”, “Racing Appliances” and my favorite “Super Appliances”.

Fast-forward a few years. Seems some so-called friends of the Yenko family are upset with me and have decided to take it out on the refrigerator. The repairman now says that the unit may not be from Don’s house, but from up the street, possibly from the home of the grandfather of one of the Dixie Chicks. The local boozier says he had reservations about the unit all along, as the brew he sampled just did not taste right. Adding fuel to the fire was a self proclaimed “vintage refrigerator expert”, who said things just did not look right, such as the handle was a tad too small. I even had someone who admitted he knew nothing about vintage refrigerators offer to help, because they were about “finding the truth”. To top it off, someone bought a similar unit from a neighbor, declaring it THE Yenko refrigerator, because reportedly Don had drank a brew or two from their unit.

At this point, I have no doubt the unit I have is indeed the one from Don’s house, it will remain stickered as pictured above, and I will continue to call it “The Yenko refrigerator”. BTW, contrary to rumors, it is not for sale.

A little REAL history about the fridge. From Hopemy (AKA Hope Yenko)

<font color="red">Tom,

It was the refrigerator that we had in our game room. Everytime Don got a hold of an interesting decal, the refrig. got a face lift. We originally purchased the refrigerator used for $35.00.

You guys are laughing now, but it wouldn't suprise me one bit to see guys lining up with bags of cash trying to buy whatever they can from guys like Bill Jenkins, including the shop toilet.

There was an auction recently of the famous pinstriper Von Dutch's belongings. Someone paid $310,000 for Dutch's old wooden box of brushes and paints. It's an old trend that has finally found its way into the car world: People who buy someone else's life. I'll bet the guy who bought Dutch's pinstriping box has never lifted a paint brush in his life. Von Dutch had one talent and worked most of his life to eke-out a living at it. Now that he's dead (and can no longer share in the money his posessions and name bring at high-brow auctions), his life is being bought by rich people whose major accomplishment was that they got rich. Again, it's not new. William Randolph Hearst filled Hearst Castle with the antiquities of ancient Europe. Now we're seeing the artifacts of the heroes of the car world (Jenkins, Yunick, Von Dutch, Ed Roth, etc.) being bought by wealthy automotive enthusiasts. I'll bet Von Dutch would have liked to get a piece of that 310K someone paid for his paint box.

I had one of the burnt piston and rods from Eddie Hills 4.99 pass (first Top Fuel driver to do so) and had him sign it while at BIR that same year. One day during a cleaning binge at home, I tossed it. I can only imagine what that piece would be worth today! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Does anyone know whatever happened to the fridge door that Ed "Big Daddy" Roth drew the original Rat Fink design on? I remember reading a story once about the origins of the Rat Fink character and the story went that Ed had sketched it on a refridgerator door, since it was the only large white surface he could find, and that it was originally duplicated from there. The door was pitched out but was supposedly later recovered by Ed after the character started to take off. With Ed's passing, who knows whos hands it may be in now. Sure would be a cool piece to have today.

Wilma, I'll take the cigarette butts. I'm planning on trying to get a genetic profile of the Grump from the cigarette butts in hopes of cloning him so I can have my own "in house Grump" to work on my cars!

Careful, he'll want to toss all the rare stuff like dual-snorkel air cleaners, smog equipment, and exhaust manifolds in the garbage because that's what he did back in the day!
