I need help identifying an engine that I pulled from under a shelf this weekend.

casting number = 3970014
cast date = F-29-72
deck stamp = CEA2214

Also there is a stamp on the bottom rail under the starter:
V0872426.

It has 1178 crank/L-2210A STD pistons/"O"rods/7173 balancer with 360 dgree timing marks. It also has a set of L-2209A pistons that the previous owner removed when the L-2210A's were installed. It also has the windage tray and oil pan.

I'm think it is a replacement 302, but don't understand the "CEA2214" deck stamp.

Thank you in advance for your help. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif

Looks like a warranty replacement engine from possibly 1972 or there abouts. Usuall the first digit after the CE (Chevrolet Engine)or CEA is the year of manufacture. The remainder are sequence build serial numbers. The engine casting date also confirms this.

On that CEA2214 stamping, the letter "A" indicates it is a late production replacement block.
Flint started numbering 00001-19999 and once they hit 19999,they reused the numbers starting back at 00001,this time adding the leter "A" to indicate this.

Paul & Rick,
Thanks for the info.
Now I need to find something to put it in.

Colvin calls casting# 3970014 "the mystery motor" because they are so rare.
I have one out of a 1973 Chevelle.
