View Full Version : 427/4 speed bench seat 68 Pontiac Strato Chief's?

A fellow I worked with used to work for Sinclair Pontiac in London Ontario in the late 60's. He recounted to me that back in 68 Sinclair ordered 7 or 8 427/4speed bench seat Strato Chief's(these were the lightweight Pontiac Sedan) in response to Central Chev's 427 Biscaynes they were ordering and racing at St.Thomas. Not sure if they were 425hp cars. He showed me a picture of one of them that he bought back then (no longer owns). Two questions: Could these be COPO cars? That seems like an awful lot of cars to order unless GM of Canada specified a minimum order. Does anyone know any more about these cars? Any survivors? I'd love to see one of these monsters.
Also, has anyone ever heard of a 427/4speed 69 Strato Chief?

I've only seen one 69 427 Strato Chief, and that was in 69 or 70. It was a black 4 door unmarked police car with an automatic, and had a wicked idle to it. It was parked on the street a block from my house in Vancouver, and the 427 emblems caught my eye. While I was looking at it, the cop returned and got in. I asked him a few questions about it, but not if it was a 425 hp car. He said he was with the freeway patrol in Burnaby. It was pretty loud and, as I said, had a wicked idle.
I have been hunting for a big block Canadian Pontiac off and on for awhile.

Rare but yes they built these...and as an RPO, nothing Copo required! .

I love Chevy powered Canadian Ponchos, especially the big cars! .
They even built W-motor Pontiac big cars and I've always been searching for my own dream...the 'possible built' late '61 409 Strato-Chief...'62's did happen! .

Back in the '60s there was a '66 Parisienne convertible. It had the L72, 4 speed, and all the other good performance parts. Wasn't a match for my Ram Air Firebird http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif, but was pretty quick considering its size. That would be one rare beast.

Sorry if double post...seems the other went into the wind? .

Anyway, the car sounds very cool Mark...lay some pics on us if you can! .
Nice user-name too although w/ a famous name like Hodges, well I'd expect a different brand?! .
(Astro-Jets were the Canadian-Pontiac Mk1V Turbo-Jets...air cleaner stickers and all!)

I think L36's were the highest HP 'advertised' 427's available in '66-'69 Canadian Ponchos but the L72's flew as an order (except in '67 of course) since they were really a Chevy chassis w/ Poncho clothes. .

There were a number of 427 Pontiacs here in London Ontario in the years 67 to 69. Even our local school bus carrier (Skinner Bus Lines)had a 69 427 black Safari Wagon. Man, there's some cool stuff out there! I'm glad I started this thread! I've also heard a rumour of a dentist who lives near London, Ontario who has a bunch of big block powered Canadian Pontiacs. Anyone here confirm?
There's a couple of 427 4 speed Biscaynes in this area- a green one owner unrestored 2dr sedan that shows up at the east London cruise night once in a while- I think it comes from Hamilton. There is also one from Dorchester, Ontario that shows up at local shows from time to time- both I believe are 425hp 427 cars..

I thought you guys might get a kick out of this. The ad from 1967 is for London Motor Products who were our local high performance Pontiac/Buick dealer here in London Ontario. As you can see, the Firebird was running right on the national record and if you look closely you'll notice the license plate on the front of the car. This bird was driven to and from the track!! Quite a difference from today's race cars. Also, you'll notice the line up for 67; Beaumont SD, Buick GS, Firebird, Pontiac 427 and Acadian SS. This was our Canadian high performance offering for Pontiac/Buick in 67. THE GOOD OLD DAYS. ...........Bill

Sweet! London really was a performance centre. It looks like all the dealers were in the game. Didn't Central Chev have a second location for their high performance offerings? I think a glass shop is there now. If anyone is from London, stop into the Cadillac Hummer dealer and talk to Doug. He lived that era and worked for Sinclair Pontiac at the time. He showed me some amazing photos from the day. So..it sounds like this dentist isn't the friendliest? Figures.. Another question-what was the highest HP 454 offered in the '70 full sized Canadian Pontiacs?
Someone needs to form a high performance Canadian Pontiac club online..

Hey Todd; You're correct, Central Chev's High Performance Centre was on the north west corner of Talbot & Fullarton Streets. It was originally a Fina Service Station. The attached photo is from a 1969 Wheelspin News. Dave Mathers (who now owns St.Thomas Dragway), Wayne Huber, Tim Wilkins & Gary Dayment were the high performane specialists and Don Brooks was the high performance technician. In 1970, Don moved onto St.Thomas Chrysler and campaigned a SS/DA 70 Hemi Cuda. Both Central Chev/Olds and London Motor Products were hotbeds for GM performance. .............Bill

Great photo Astrojet. I can almost see the GOLD 427 emblem on the fender (see attached). All 427 Pontiacs from 66 to 69 had this emblem. As "car crazy" kids we would always check full sized Pontiacs in town for the Gold 427 emblem and if the car had one we would check to see if it had a 4 speed (Ha Ha). Here's the breakdown on large engines from 65 to 69. 65- Super-Flame 409/340&400hp, 66- Jet-Flame 427/390&425hp, 67- Jet Flame 427/385hp, 68- Jet Flame 427/385hp, and 69- 427 Astro-Jet 427/335&390hp. The classified ad from Wheelspin News 1969 of the 67/ 425hp Laurentian that I posted earlier make me think it may have been a special order car out of Oshawa. Thanks for starting this thread Todd. Cnd. Pontiacs don't get much discussion.....Bill

Here is a photo of the green 69 Biscayne out of Brantford Ontario which is owned by a friends of mine Don and Connie. Don is a founding member of a local car club called the "Piston Pushers".He is the original owner of the car which was bought new in Hamilton. The first modification he made was to swap the 427 badges for 327 badges. The car was a real money maker on the streets of Toronto back in the day. One night Don was arrested for street racing and spent the night in jail. When I first heard this story, Connie was standing quietly beside him. When she saw the surprised look on my face she said "Its a true story. I was his girlfriend at the time and I was the one who made his bail". What do you do when you find a good woman like that? Marry her of course.

There were approx 4 70 2+2 convert's with 454 - I know of and have talked to the owner of one in Iowa which had the 454 390 hp swapped for an LS7. I currently have a 70 2+2 convert with 400 cu inch and owned a 70 strato chief - ex RCMP pursuit car with 454. I sold car when I was 18 and vehicle history ended 4 years later at a scrap yard in about 1979. Car had 345 hp with dual chrome exhaust tips put on by the RCMP. Wish I could find that car again. Also would be interested in knowing of anyone has seen or heard of any other 70 2+2's with the 400 - I have never seen in a convert. Also would like to tt other 70 2+2 owners.

Being a RCMP vehicle the Strato Chief was a four door and yes I do have the VIN based on the MOT search that I did five years ago. It was black and later painted blue when I owned it. Car had 2.73 highway gears and you could pin the 140mph speedo. It was a great sleeper car and was pretty quick off the line as well. I am wondering of anyone knows if you can buy partial rear quarter panels for my 70 2+2 - my left rear needs replacing - thanks.

Whttp://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gifW Colsey, your photo archives always impress me...you've simply outdone yourself again!.

Like 2Qwik's car, mine came out of Saskatchewan too but who knows how far and wide they ever passed the cars around?.
The car in the pic appears to be morphing from an unmarked to marked unit just like mine did...my car finally ending up w/ the door skins and roof painted white...not doorframes or B-pillers..
That same gumball and spotlight were added to mine too...the body holes still there and both items were in the trunk plus the cop radio and an old whip antennea base piece..
Also the pic car has the dog-caps so can only be a drum car too...hmmmmm, all very interesting?.

Looking at the '65 Poncho sedan beside the Biscayne, it's got the white roof happening but appears to have B-piller chrome so would a Strato Chief be out and maybe a Parisienne or Laurentian...sure wonder what drivetrain it was too?.

Thanks Colesy and keep'em coming...shake that magic photo box a few more times!.

I blew that one up a bit, but the quality has suffered. That Pontiac looks like a civilian Parisienne.

For the past 20 years the RCMP and other Federal Government agenciies dispose of their "retired" equipment through "Crown Assets Disposal" through a sealed bid system. this is how I purchased a 1979 Malibi 9C1 in 1983 and a 1982 Mabibu 9C1 in 1987.
In the early days cars were just traded in to a local dealer who was preping the new fleet. In St. John's in 1973 our local Ford dealer was delivering 20+ 1973 Fords and had 20+ 1971 Chevs on their used car lot. The cars were given a quick repait in white (back in those days the cars were black and later that weird shade of blue.
My cousin was in the RCMP in Sasketchewan through the late 60's and 70's,mostly in remote towns. His detachment had between 4 and 6 units. When refresh time came, in those days 2 years or 100,000 miles the old units were retured to divisional HQ for new ones.
Used cop cars were always popular with the general public.

In reference to an earlier post about Central Motors in London Ontairo, I purchased a 1970 442 W-30 last fall that spent its whole life in the London area and was sold new at Central. I got a ton of paperwork with the car that included original invoices and business cars of Wayne Huber and Don Brooks.

Here is the only photo I have of this car, a 70 2+2 with a factory 454. I've known of this car for years, and in 1991 when this photo was taken, it was freshly repainted. It had had some rust issues at that time. I last saw the car 3 years ago, but it was really down at heel with rust and the 454 was out and it had a 350 in it.

I just reread this thread again and it was just as cool the second time! Any more pics or info? I'm also in the beginnings of looking for a 69 Canadian Pontiac 2 door hardtop. Anything from a Strato Chief to 2+2 (big or small block). Obviously the more solid and complete the better. If you guys hear of any please drop me a line. My email is todd.st (at) rogers.com

I have no knowledge of the car. I found it on Flickr, a photo sharing site. It appears to be a southern Alberta car. Cool car anyway.

Saw the car. It can be saved but needs lots of work. Pics here (I would have taken more but my batteries died!!):

The underneath is rough. Car sat in a damp garage with a dirt floor for a number of years. Trunk rotted, gas tank rotted, floors will likely poke thru in spots. Front clip had real poor fit but orig owner claims no accidents . Major mold inside.. A cool car though and if you have the bucks to restore it right, it's worth picking up!

Mark, in your opinion, what do you think the car is worth? I feel 8k with all the work needed. It's unclear if the motor is useable. Not sure what work the trans needs either. If it comes close I may pull the trigger.

I do know 10k won't take it! The engine is still soaking, soon to have diesel added to hopefully free the rings. As far as the trans,I'll bet the linkage is just seized as I couldn't budge the shifter.I would like it,but I better finish my GTO first.

I know they were hoping I'd buy it when it was 23K. They really want it to go to someone who isn't looking to do a quickie on it and flip it.
Maybe after I win this Fridays Super 7...

2qwik2c found the car in Ontario and he sold him an F41 bar that was missing as the previous owner had raced the car and it was added weight. This was greatly appreciated and anyone dealing with this individual is advised that he is on the up and up with absolutley no problems. The vehicle in question, 1 of 5, is now owned by the original owner and will be restored in time, if I last that long. Thanks, Doug.
