What I find strange is that the partial VIN is stamped on the front pad. I took pictures of an unrestored LS6 yesterday and the partial was stamped by the oil filter. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
Was it normal on these cars to stamp the partial in 2 different locations??

It depends on what assembly plant the car came from. Some were on the front pad in 70, others were down by the oil filter.

------I was hoping someone else would jump in as I have never seen an LS6 motor stamped anywhere other than the pad. I defer to Rixls6 as Im familiar with the vast amount of knowledge he has about 1970 Chevelles. Rick,,,What plants stamped the numbers by the filter???.......Bill S
Van Nuys did it more then others. That's not to say they did it all the time and it was not LS-6 specific.

is that a restamp?

The engine being sold and the one I looked at both have a Baltimore stamp. The fresh rebuilt one being sold is 10B161XXX and the one I looked at is 10B185XXX.

I normally cringe when I hear those words because I think the word "restamp" is used way to much but that was the first thing that came to my mind when I saw the fresh engine. Not saying it is, not saying it's not but I can't imagine the partial being in 2 different locations from the same plant and I know about the one I looked at yesterday. So???

Am assuming he meant turquoise mist for original car color. What a dynamite combo with black interior! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

I wouldn't think that someone would stamp a VIN on the engine for a car that they don't own, nor know who owns it. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Why not? He has the Canadian docs for the car, says he knows the car and it's history and knows the full VIN. He even states he would love to see the engine back in the original car. All someone has to do is get themselves a 1970 Chevelle or Malibu, buy the motor, tranny and docs for $17k as he has advertised and whammo, instant LS6 with Canadian documentation. What a deal, huh?
You can't tell me someone's not thinking about that. Plus if the original car has been destroyed and can not be found, that makes it even better. It's wrong but I bet it has happened before.

You would still be missing the Dash vin tag unless you know of someone who's making those!

and you would also be missing the title to the car...which he states is in CA??? So how would you have an instant LS6 with no VIN or Title?
Having looked at many 1970 Chevelles over the Years the general rule is Baltimore, Atlanta ,Kansas are top deck , but note Kansas cars are a larger 3/16 font and stamped upside down generaly. Balt cars have a unique twist there are quite a number of Feb built cars that display a 188 first three digits of the vin as the O and the B must have been damaged and they inserted the 88 into the gang holder during this period. The vin's are 1/8 for the other plants. I have inspected an April built , documented LS-6 that had the vin stamped on the deck and on the oil filter boss as well. You can get a lost title easily and the that makes that engine a home run to the rebody guys looking to recreate a real one . Make a note of the vin as this car may just be showing up again. Mark...as you know it's not legal but is easy enough to do here in Ontario where you can obtain title to something that's non-existant (like the five ZL1's deal)...then add a crookster-repop Vin and Cowl tag to match the docs...another 'matching numbers' LS6 is 'born again'! .

He's been doing that for Corvettes since the early 80's and everybody knows about it...so I don't think he's too worried about getting caught http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Just to be clear...the person I am refering to that has been stamping VIN's, trim tags and build sheets for years is the guy in this ebay listing, not the guy selling the LS6 motor!!! Anyone who as been around Corvettes knows who I am talking about...

I've known the guy who is selling the motor for nearly 30 years and if he says it's the real deal, it's the real deal in my opinion! Sorry for any confusion I caused you locals http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Am I wrong or is there a number missing from the LS6 engine stamping? My stamp reads, "TO417CRR",..for April 17th, but his stamp only has three numbers before the partial VIN.
It actually reads T0220CRV for February 20th.
