View Full Version : Legal question about vin/cowl swaps

If you purchase a car that had it's vin/cowl tag changed, with a title that matches, but the hidden vin is different, which car do you legally own? Would you register it by the hidden vin # or the one that appears fake? And, if you locate the car that has your original vin & cowl tag what rights would you have to get them back?

This has happened recently, and the State Police pulled the VIN plate off one car and gave it back to the guy who had the body with the matching hidden VIN.

I would say the hidden VIN would be the car you own. Not the VIN that matchs the title.

Wouldn't it be more like the hidden Vin vehicle would be the car you happen to have there...but not own? .
If someone pinched your car and stuck other tags on it and sold it w/ a title matching the 'new' Vin, how could he now 'own' the hidden Vin vehicle...it's still yours isn't it? .

From what I have seen, the hidden vin's over-rule the actual vin tag - after inspection. So, if the vin tag is from a Yenko, and the body is not, you can't simply slam the vin into the firewall and claim victory.

Too bad...I was thinking if you really felt the way you'd said, your '68 Gibb car w/ some other tags wouldn't be such a bad thing to have afterall?

Pete, whose Gibb Nova are you referring to? If it's #21 the vin does match the hidden vins.

Pete...You really do need to clear up the above statement you made....

Sorry lads. . It was a cheap shot at stealing and retagging the car...nothing to do w/ questioning any car's authenticity. .

in Georgia,a no title state for cars a certain age,it's not even the tags that can get a car taken from you.
i saw a guy lose a 69 Coronet R/T because some guy proved he owned it 10 years earlier, and the new owner couldnt provide an ownership history,or actual identity of seller..

Hey Pete, no problem.
I'm actually looking at an ex-drag Camaro that's had them switched & I'd want to register it by the firewall # instead of the dash vin. You have to wonder why someone would go to that trouble for a drag car.
What if the reason they were switched was because it was stolen? Or, what if it's a special car & the digets are on a restored COPO or Z 28-could I get the tags back? I can't put money into a car that I might not legally own. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/burnout.gif

That's a good answer, Kim. Didn't think of it that way. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif But, since it does have a title matching the dash vin I might, could, maybe, sorta own it. Isn't posession 9/10th's of the law? I'll try going thru local law inforcement & see what they have to say.

Jude That's like a being a little bit pregant, you either is or you isn't. That title belongs to another car. If you dont have a title to the hidden VINs you dont own it. Do yourself a favor run from it.!!!!!

No problem fellas...sorry to be the troublemaker. .
Jude, it's a good thing you've checked the hidden Vins! .
I take it the seller is aware now...was he before? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif .
Sounds like you'd better run the hidden Vin...actually both Vins before plunking down any dough! .
How long has the seller had the car and what transfer date is on the title that matches the tags? .
And how far back of a racing history is known...are you able to tell us what year the car is yet? .

One guy has a car with the hidden vin, but not his original vin tag, but rather a State issued replacement vin. Another guy has his vin tag on another car, and a valid title. Who owns what? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

I'd suggest that you run the hidden VIN through DMV. You might end up doing a good deed and having the car returned to it's previous legal owner... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

One car has the vin stamped on the f/wall, the other car has the actual vin tag. Both are the same number, which car is the real one?

Correct-a-mundo!! Now there is one car without a vin plate, and the original car has it's original vin plate along with the state issued replacement. Took a while, but, it ended good - almost, the guy without a vin needs his money back http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif We're working on that one for him.

The guy without the VIN should be able to get a state issued plate to match the firewall VIN on his car. But he would still need a title.
These collector car charades will sure make a mess out of ownership issues in the future ! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif
You should change your ID name to Barney F.
