Hi guys, I was at a swap this summer and found a 427 engine for sale, the owner claimed it was in a corvette that was smashed in 1970, i bought the engine (short block) and after looking at it, i seen it had a 7115 crank dimple rods and some very high compression pistons, the block is 4 bolt main with the windage tray, casting #3955270 no prefix at all no vin it is a late 68 date that was balanced in early 69 (engraved on crank) just wondering if this is a over the counter engine?? vette only?? L-88?? any input would be great thanks Rich

Well, Rich, if the front pad still has the original broaching marks and no stampings, probably is a fitted cylinder case from parts dept. If the pad surface has been tampered with, ie; decked, there is no telling what its original application could have been.

Rich,

As you might have guessed, the '7115 crank was the L-88 & ZL-1
crankshaft. However, the existence of that crank in a 4-bolt
block does not an L-88 make ( sorry Yoda ).

As was already offered-up, if the block was decked, you
will probably never know what it was unless possibly finding
a VIN stamped in the rough casting at the back of the block
near the rear of the oil filter. BTW, do the pistons use
floating or pressed wrist pins. L-88's used floating....
