Pardon my bogarting your thread but how did said "third party" go about "accessing" your eBay account? Did he/she/they guess your password or is there some other nefarious technique we should know about?

Yes they fraudulently got a hold of my password somehow, accessed my account, listed my item as theirs under their user ID just 5 hours prior to auction end, then ebay stopped my auction thankfully. It is a scheme in order to send "second chance offers" after auction end and collect $$$.It's not the 1st time it happens on Ebay. So I've had to change my password etc... A good way to avoid have this happen to you is change your password periodically and only answer messages thru Ebay partaining to your auctions, not your email. Louis

Another scam that is pulled on e-bay is they see you have a paypal account and e-mail you and say your payment to joe blo for $200.00 for an ipod has been received,if this is not an authorized transaction, please contact us. Then they have a link that says contact paypal, and if you click that link they ask for your password, and if you type that in,they have access to your paypal account! The page looks just like your paypal account. This happened to me and when they asked for my password,i then got out of there and went to my paypal account. There was no such charge.

These phishing scams Chad is talking about are really well done. They're out there in both Ebay and Paypal forms. The Ebay ones are set up in a way that it sounds like a seller you've never heard of with an item you've never seen is telling you this is your third and final notice to pay up before Ebay gets medeval on your a$$. So as you panic and "log in" to fix this mess, they have your ID and password. I made the mistake of logging in before I was totally awake one morning, and right after I did the "log-in" and gave them my info, it went to a vaguely worded page that I knew immediately wasn't Ebay. So I had about 10 minutes to go and change every sensitive password I could think of before I had to get the kids off to school. (Think of how many log-ins reference your e-mail and how many of us use a common password everywhere). Doing all of your correspondence through Ebay is the best, but at least run your cursor over their "log in" links and look in the corner of your screen to where that log in will take you. The random address or hotmail account shown tells the tale.
