I know swapping a vin tag is not legal and this was hashed out some months ago. What's the verdict?

"This car came to our restoration shop, and was to be used as a donor car for a brand new 69 Crate Camaro Build up.
It has no vin or trim tag as those will be used on the new car."

Personally I would like to hear that the POPO is arresting people swapping vin tags! The people doing the swapping need to serve a little time in the Pokey for there actions!Unless it is done with accordance of the Law enforcement.I know that in some cases there are vin tags issued by the state to be used on vehicles. That would be OK but just taking a vin tag from another vehicle and swapping it to another vehicle is PLAIN WRONG!And it don't make anydifference if you own both vehicles legally in my book.I think that Law Enforcement sees it as criminal!

Looks like the cowl/Vin stamped areas go with the car? .
What happens next if you buy the eBay car and have the Vin registered to you now before these swappers get their 'project' finished and register the Vin themselves? .

the new bodies come with a number no reason to bring the other real vin to the car except to pass it off as real down the road. rather stupid I have to say, the owner could have sold the old body for decent dough to offset his resto had he not pulled the vin.

The car dosent look that bad, why would they not use this one as the build and forget about swapping the vins?

Because they are going to put a "reproduction" i.e. "fake" trim tag on it to make it look like a real SS, or big block with a desirable color combo.
Far as I can see, that is the ONLY reason to put a VIN tag from another car on a crate body. Nothing wrong with the crate bodies, but they should be titled as shop built vehicles with state issued VIN, just like a fiberglass 32 Ford.
