Am I the only guy that thinks the hobby has a black clould over it lately?? So many people saying prices are falling, dooms day is coming etc..(and some seem they cant wait for it to happen??) when infact numerous records are being set at sales just about every month..(Otis auction and the another one last month in IL. I forget who had it but it had record prices on just about everything) everyone judges the market by ebay (scam city)or auctions that are full of the same cars over and over again that nobody wants. And to top that off all this crap about this site and that site fake super cars, fake paper work blah blah blah...all it does is cast doubt on everything! All were doing is shooting ourselves in the foot!!

This isnt directed at anyone just my thought from reading post on other cars sites and talking with people in general.

Just like to hear what others are thinking?? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif

I think things are correcting themselves just like the housing market. Things have to level off somewhere for awhile. Besides a true car guy doesn't really care about what his car is worth because he just enjoys owning it and hopefully driving it on occasion! Stocks are an investment, land is an investment, 401 K's are an investment. Cars should be a hobby. Only the REAL car guys want the prices to come down so we can buy more. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

As long as I can get gas, I don't see any black clouds. Just had my Cuda' out one last time before the blizzard, nothing's gonna wipe the smile off my face that comes with flogging these old rides. I'm not too worried about prices either, corrections are inevitable but I've always bought what I liked to drive, or cloned what I wanted, but couldn't afford. Enjoy the hobby and don't let that other stuff ruin your perspective JMO

There is no doubt in my mind that the feeding frenzy is over for the time being. Good cars are still selling for decent money, but it is taking longer and buyer's are much more cautious compared to 2005. I think this is good for the hobby personally as things got way too crazy last year. I haven't seen too many records being set lately, so I can't support that comment, but I have seen a few cars go for good money, but they were good cars http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif Documented, original drivetrain, rare/hi-po cars will always bring decent money...it's the "others" that are suffering.

Andy...I am tired of all the BS, too! What i like about this site is all of the friends that I've made here. The cars are just a common ground for all of us to meet at. I didn't really buy my car as an investment. If it makes money,fine...if not...I have a blast everytime the family and I take it out. I have also come in contact with some really AWESOME people while hanging at Pavillions.

So all I really have to say is http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/youguysrock.gif

In some ways I agree, in some ways I don't.

If you think there's been a black cloud lately, all I can say is "Where have you been?!" Things have been like this for the past few years.

I really have no idea if the market is slowing down or not. But using record prices to prove that it's still going strong is a not correct in my book. I think the rich players are gonna finish snapping up the creme de la creme, and then the regular cars will fall to a point where they're more affordable. But the most desirable cars will remain high because the collectors that have corralled them will keep the prices high and trade among themselves.

Good point! I agree with Sam too! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif

I was out a few weeks ago at a TGI Fridays and overheard this guy who was wearing a sweater over his back and the arms wrapped around his neck with a diamond pinky ring bragging about a Camaro he just bought. When I heard CAMARO....like a dog, my ears turned around to catch the conversation!!! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I immediately reconized that his hands told the whole story. Besides his "personal apendage", neither his right or left hand had held anything more complicated then a MontBlanc pen!! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif

So, my wife says, "Jeff, please, not again; leave this guy alone to enjoy his chocolate martini. I just want to watch the Iggles" I said, "okay dear".....then promptly turned around and asked him what year? Oh, it is a 69. "What engine in the car?" He looked at me with confidence and with a "you talking to me" grin and said it was a big block 327! that GM used bigger pistons for this engine!! Now.....I just said, "WOW...that IS a rare one, didn't make many of those" He said "I know, bought it at Spring Carlise. "Gears or Turbo?" was my next question. He said, "oh a TurboGlide".......ah-huh was my next thought.........now were talking. Bartender....gimmee another Tanquery & Tonic........................... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

So.....of course after a few more silly ass answers to my questions, I sprung the question....HOW MUCH? I watched his Adams Apple move deep into his throat when he said the guy wanted more but he "got him down" to $47,000. I said, 'FOURTY-SEVEN THOUSAND; like three zeros after the 47? (Deb promplty kicked me at the bar rail) He asked if I thought it was a good deal. I said "hell no, it was a great deal, I'm jealous". Only thing I didn't say was that the deal was great for the Seller!!!

Said that the guy he negotiated with was selling it for his Aunt who had it stored since his Uncle died. Asked him if he got all the paperwork? He said that his Aunt was still looking for it with other stuff his Uncle kept and that eventually she'd find it and he'd get it! YEA, he got it alright. Hook, line and sinker!

Well, the Iggles lost the game, McNabb tore his ACL and I had 3 too many T&T's. I told him maybe I'd see him on the road or at some car show, my car is yellow and is also a 69. He said," oh no, I'm not driving it, it's to rare for that. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Goes to show you, keep your eye out for buyers who wear sweaters on backwards and guys like that obese gentleman at the B-J auction who changes his coat each time to match the color car he's selling; you just might see another sale that pushes the price further up & away from the true
enthusiast. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Like the car salesman says, there's an ass for every seat. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/scholar.gif

ps. Bruce, Me & Mark will see you at The Pavillions and B-J. We'll treat you to a steak at Pinnacle Peak!

But one is a Tier 1 collectible, and the other is a musclecar for the masses. While it's true that the expensive stuff brings up the tail of the lesser stuff, the fact remains that a GTO, RR, and any other everyman's musclecar are not going to be museum pieces like some of the others.

Hey Jersey Jeff. You da man! Exactly what has happened to the hobby. NON car guys who can't even check their oil. Man 40-$50,000 sounds cheap to them even if it is a 307 car. Look how much they paid for their Mercedes or Lexus. I hope everything comes back down to earth. I agree with Bruce. "Everything should be about the people."

The price of a new 2008 Mercedes/Lexus will always be more than the price of a 2007,and no one will stop buying them because of the price increases . Therefore the prices of classic cars is not going to drop but at worst level off,you just may not see the huge appreciation of 30/50% in a year. Sorry Sam, I know you want to pay 15K for a #1 69Z but you missed the boat 15 years ago http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I must be mistaken.....

I like to watch pro football on TV even though I haven't played since high school

I'm a partner in oil and gas wells but I didn't discover Spindletop

I own a few stocks and bonds but don't have a seat on the NYSE.

I bought a tractor but I'm not a farmer.

I love to watch nascar but don't live in the Southeast

I've worked on my own car but I'm not ASE certified

I thought it was my money and whatever I invested in was an "investment"

Guess I was wrong!

Could you please tell me where to get an application for "Car Guy" and who to send it to for approval?

Price increases of new cars are marginal. In addition, many people lease cars, while collectibles use up liquid assets. Not to mention the fact that a Lexus is a daily driver, while a Yenko is not.

Jeff,

That TGI Firday's Story is the best!!! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

There's enough car's for everyone to enjoy. My motivation to go to work everyday (other than my family) is to try to get another car I really want, or just to be able to finish the two I still have. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif

The market will take care of itself, just like in the 1980's (although, likely not as severely), and if/when it does, I'm gonna be there with cash-in-hand!!! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

You are not mistaken.....hardly.

Think about this.....If a person needs a definition of what a car guy is, like Sam said, then they ain't one http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif

As a car guy or gal, you know "who is and who isn't"; you don't have to be rocket scientist to figure this one out, do you? What I'm saying is the guy who has money but doesn't know his ass from accelerator valve when it comes to cars, ain't a car guy or whatever you want to label him as. No flaming here....PLEASE just that owning a classic or soon to be one carrys responsibilitys to the hobby. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

And by the way, if I saw that pinky-ringed fellow broken down on Rt 295 or the NJTP, I'd stop and get his car running for him. I always carry a pack of matches to set worn out points!!! (the flap is about .019) http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

If you had choice to go out in the ocean or bay with a guy and his single prop, 2-stroke Evinrude 21' boat and one said "bring the instruction book" and the other guy said "grab some tools, standard & metric", who would you go with? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif I'd go with the car guy!

Hey Howard, The things you said in your post is NOT driving up prices on anything. The people that are buying alot of these very expensive musclecars are the same guys that used to laugh at me when I was pumping gas and changing oil after school in 1968. When these classics that people like Jeff and I and many others on this site have, started to go up and up and up in price they jumped in the mix. Looks like when the stock market slipped some, they jumped in on the car craze. Probably the gun collectors feel the same way. JMO Sam

Would someone please tell Carroll Shelby to put his sweater on the correct way next time he steps to the podium at BJ.

Someone needs to send him a copy of Car Guy Etiquette.

The cars with good pedigree will always bring solid prices. Limited production, high performance, good paperwork, original components are the cars that are still in high demand. I just got done putting a new clutch in my 70 L78 car and took it out for a drive today. Wow, it's so much better to drive now that I want to take it out again tomorrow! I hate the prices that some of the cars/parts sell for, but if the values on the cars didn't go up, then nobody would be getting these top notch restorations done because they would be a losing proposition. Whether you drive your car or just enjoy showing it, it doesn't matter because it's your car to do whatever you want. You can tell a real car guy just by talking to them.
