Nickey just recently purchased a 1969 Camaro L89 Super Stocker. I am looking for information and action photos of the car.

Any additional help would be greatly appreciated.

Info provided by Sam Scardino from the 1973 N.E.D. NHRA Annual (North East Division 1)

"To win the Division Championship in the North East Division in Super Stock eliminator is quite an accomplishment. It is common place to find over 150 Super Stocks entered in competition and making the call for the first round of eliminations at any event.

It is refreshing to see a family effort move into the Winner's circle in one of the hardest fought eliminators there is to win.

Such are the dividends being reaped by the DeSalve family of DuBois, PA.

The race car is owned by father Herbert DeSalve, age 54, driven by the youngest of two brothers, Barry, and is crew chiefed by 29 year old Richard DeSalve.

The father and sons team started in 1967 with a pure stock '67 GTO which was converted to a stocker in 1968.

In 1969 the present "Herbie's Hugger" Camaro was obtained for competition in Super Stock. The team was a regular in Division One NHRA All-Star Super Stock Circuit in '69,'70 and '72.

The Tri-County Performance Entry was the quickest SS/DA Chevy at all major NHRA events attended in 1971 and 1972 and established it to be the quickest of all entries in the All-American Racing team heads-up Super Stock circuit in '73 by garnering four straight wins in a row, in addition, to the Division Championship laurels.

The many hours of work and toil have paid off in big dividends for the DeSalve family and it may do well for others to take note of this dertirmined effort."

Thanks again Sam!

I think these old race cars are very cool, especially when they have multifaceted and solid underlining historical significance.

I can't take credit for finding it, only in taking advantage of buying it when it became available.

Sam that info you sent me said it all!

Bruce thanks for the pics!

The car has been restored to look like back in the Super Stock days. Notice that the car was also sponsored by Vitar Engineering. I will have some as is today pics soon.

This is another race car that was not cut up very much (for a race car that is) It has what appears to be original sheet metal, floor pans, mini tubs and most of the trunk and extensions. Many of these cars had the cowls cut out and were back halved latter in life, but not this one.

Trim tag and vin as well as all secondary Vins have never been messed with.

This Car did battle with some of the most Famous and significant Super Stockers of all time, such as Grumpy Jenkins and Sox & Martin and Carried the Chevrolet Banner very prominently and successfully.

On the back of the Spoiler was written "Chevy against the World".

If anyone has pics of this car in action I would greatly appeciate a copy.

Cool pic of the "Soul Survivor". I was told that this too was originally a factory L89 Camaro?

I've collected quite a few pics and info about Herbie's Hugger. I'll post some of the Vintage stuff soon.

Here is the original Window Sticker, which the DeSalve's had kept along with the original Keys, knock outs and owners manual. Barry also provided some cool pics and vintage news paper clippings,as well as other related info.

Booth & Aarons Handled the Engine building early on and John Lingenfelter Built H.H's. engines later on.

Barry said that they traded the L89 as credit on their first Booth Aarons built 427.

I always thought the L89 head option added over 800.00 to the separate option of L78[additional]. It appears to be a 300.00 plus option on the window sticker shown, unless im reading it wrong. I believe an L89 was over a 1100.00 option because the heads had to be added to the L78 option and paid in addition

394.95=L89

Stefano
04-17-2007, 07:06 PM
I have seen RPO L89 listed as $710.95 for 1969 which was the L78 396 with aluminum heads. It appears that a net credit for the L78 was provided, which was $316.00. This nets out to the $394.95 L89 option price on the window sticker.

This way you weren't paying 2X for the 396 option.

427king
04-17-2007, 10:29 PM
I think its written in a few publications that the L89 option was actually in addition to the L78 and some have it listed as one with the L78 not being needed first for the L89 option.

In 69, L78 and L89 were 2 separate options. L78 was required for L89 to be ordered.

Different pricing system in 68 - L89 $$ included L78.

Kurt S

Not too surprising. Parts always have more overhead costs, hence a higher price.
If anyone has a part # for the heads, I'll check the 69 price.

Sorry...I wish I had a better copy, but I don't own the original, only the poor digital snapshot of it you see here. The pic was on display at the annual PID reunion and is owned by the old track photographe, whose name eludes me right now. If the pic or any others are on display at the next reunion, I'll be sure to get a better copy of it for you and post it here. A cool car to say the least. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Looks like HH, along with Jerry Mc.'s '68 Z "Old Reliable" will be at Mecum in the Spring.

Randy,
You don't miss a beat! Yes, it was a no-sale at RM.

I am new to your site and it is great to see the interest in Herbie's Hugger. I live only minutes from where the Peterson Memorial Dragway was, it is now a industrial park with only the starting line remaining. P.M.D. on occasion had races with very famous racers. I will begin checking for photos or video of Herbie's Hugger. I am looking for any photos of another car that raced in SS/C at Peterson's named the Book Chevy City PACESETTER. (67 Camaro L78)

The original Herbie's Hugger will be part of the Gilmore Car Museum's (near Kalamazoo, MI) new exhibit "History - 1/4 Mile at A Time" featuring over 20 iconic drag racers. The exhibit opens May 1 and runs through October 31.
http://www.gilmorecarmuseum.org/html/content_page.php?content_id=7& for more info on it.

A Cackle Fest (not the cars on display) will also take place on Memorial Day Weekend at the Gilmore Car Museum.
