Is the GTO really a Royal sold & modified car? Also, is the Superbee a documented Mr Norm sold car, or, is this some TV license being taken? Great cars no doubt. Just wondering if the hype is backed up by facts.

The Gto was ordered by a dealer in winnipeg named Birchwood motors. They campaigned a 68 firebird ram air II which was bought new from Royal in Michigan. They had Milt Schornack from Royal flown in to tune their cars. They raced the green 69 gto along with a 69 judge. The salesman that raced the green one STILL works at the dealership. The car was special ordered with 4.33 gears and born to race.Neat history...we'll see how it does.

Very cool car & history Bruno. I don't see how the show could claim it to be a "Royal Bobcat" though, unless Royal had an arrangement with that dealer to sell their cars with the Royal Bobcat name. Any idea if the Dodge was really sold at Grand Spaulding?

I agree with Mike, Bruno - I love that RAIV! However, if it wasn't sold at Royal and/or Bobcatted at Royal, it isn't a Royal Bobcat car. I have a 65 GTO, unreal 1-owner survivor car, sold new in Michigan about 20 miles from Royal, in 3-65. I have a receipt from an independent shop from 8-65 for installing a "Bobcat" type kit - steel shim head gaskets, CC heads, valves, springs, curve dist, re-jet the trips, etc..- even have the work order and cancelled check. But it isn't a Royal Bobcat. Does have some really cool decals on the valve covers that say "Tiger by Ted" that were from a dealer competing with Royal. I'll post pictures when I get the car back from getting detailed at Tiemann's shop.

The Super Bee used on the show is a car I know VERY well. I have owned it 3 or 4 times, most recently sold it to a customer in Canada who told me he let LMC use it for the show. It is a fantastic car but is in no way a Mr. Norm's car. It did not have the Norm's decals on it when I sold it.
I was supposed to loan my Mr. Norm's GSS 440 Dart to Peter Klutt to use on the show, but a transmission issue and scheduling conflict with SCR9 prevented that, as the show taped up until the first day of SCR9. As a lot of you know, I wouldn't miss the SCR and brought the Mr. Norm's car there to display with Mike's Norm's Dart (and race him!).

As an owner of a real Royal Bobcat car and a real Mr. Norm's car, like Mike, I too am a stickler for proper identification. I know it sounds like splitting hairs or nit-picking, but as there are very few actual Royal sold and tuned Bobcat cars and Grand Spaulding sold and tuned cars, I think it is important to differentiate.

Can't wait to see the show, should be great.

In themselves the cars are great. Smokey burnouts prove nothing. Any of these cars can do them at will. Four wheels locked up while stopping only proves that the brakes are better than the tires. Ours are nothing cars and I still wouldn't want some clown beating on them to prove nothing. I can hardly believe that the owners would let these guys do this to the cars. Do TV shows really have to do this kind of stuff to attract an audience?
Bruno, I had a '68 Ram Air Firebird that was set up by London Motor Products in London. They installed the full Royal Bobcat Kit along with a lot of other modifications. Ran pretty well and I didn't care whether it was a Royal car or not. I was just satisfied with the way it could put a long face on the Chevy guys' faces.

bruno17
12-19-2006, 12:24 AM
Hey Keith,
Was that a ramair II firebird? I think it might be THE quickest pontiac from that era. As far as the upcoming show goes,I know it doesn't prove anything but are those burnouts cool or what? I raced my car all year and all I did was change the oil.The bias ply tires are a great shock absorber for the drivetrain.I don't think Peter could have beat on it any harder than I did...........but then again....I wasn't allowed to watch either.

Keith Tedford
12-19-2006, 05:03 AM
Bruno, it was the earlier Ram Air motor with the turbo 400 balanced, blueprinted, headers. I read once where there were fewer than 100 built with the automatic. I have no doubt that these cars in the show will take the beating, unless a shift is missed. The Chevies can even handle that. I've done it myself as far as going through the gears. Miss a shift in a 428 CobraJet and you have a good chance of putting a rod out the side of the block. In the late '60s the 428s around here spit rods and the L78s dropped valves. Stock big block Pontiacs didn't like the 6K+ rpm. This could create a basket of scrap. It was pretty common for these engines. I just don't want someone else doing it to my stuff. I didn't really test my cars until I was thoroughly used to them. I've never had two 4 speed cars that shifted or felt the same. I'd certainly never go out and pound on a fresh car, especially someone elses. I only know one person that I have enough confidence in to let him beat on my car and be sure that it will live. He doesn't have a TV show unfortunately. I'd like to see all these cars run with headers and slicks for some meaningful times. Unfortunately, good traction could break some very expensive parts. I'll probably be watching the show and cheering the old Pontiac along. I do have my darker Pontiac side. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

this seems more like an exhibit rather than a shootout. what would be a more comparible competition between makes and models? i think they should all either be either compacts, mid-size, full size, or ponycar. i think then at least it wouldnt be intermingled. perhaps SYC Camaro vs S/S AMX vs Shelby Mustang vs Hemi Cuda vs RAIV Trans AM vs 428 Eliminator.

COPO, i WOULD love to see the SC finish nicely. my SC restoration is still pending until i sell the Roush. i know all about the unavalability on SC/rambler parts! luckly the prior owner went down to AMC and bought sheetmetal for the whole car back in 1973 (just in case he schmucked it up). all that NOS is waiting to go on my Hurst.

Here are the results:

Braking
-------
1. 69 Shelby Mustang 428SCJ
2. 69 RAIV GTO Royal Bobcat
3. 69 Baldwin-Motion 427 Camaro
4. 69 AMC Hurst Rambler/Scrambler
5. 69 Super Bee (Mr. Norm's)
6. 69 Yenko Nova 427

Slalom
------
1. 69 Baldwin-Motion 427 Camaro
2. 69 Shelby Mustang 428SCJ
3. 69 RAIV GTO Royal Bobcat
4. 69 Super Bee (Mr. Norm's)
5. 69 AMC Hurst Rambler/Scrambler
6. 69 Yenko Nova 427

0-60 mph
--------
1. 69 RAIV GTO Royal Bobcat - 5.40 sec
2. 69 Super Bee (Mr. Norm's) - 5.65 sec
3. 69 AMC Hurst Rambler/Scrambler - 5.85 sec
4. 69 Baldwin-Motion 427 Camaro - 6.05 sec
5. 69 Shelby Mustang 428SCJ - 6.20 sec
6. 69 Yenko Nova 427 - 6.25 sec

1/4 mile
--------

1. 69 RAIV GTO Royal Bobcat - 13.04 @ 106 mph
2. 69 Baldwin-Motion 427 Camaro - 13.41 @ 106 mph
3. 69 Super Bee (Mr. Norm's) - 13.83 @ 102 mph
4. 69 AMC Hurst Rambler/Scrambler - 13.87 @ 101 mph
5. 69 Yenko Nova 427 - 13.96 @ 101 mph
6. 69 Shelby Mustang 428SCJ - 14.08 @99 mph

The RAIV was the overall winner.

The Yenko Nova suffered wheel hop and was a fresh resto, but I don't believe it was "off" enough to explain why it came in dead last in nearly every event.

The Shelby had the largest factory wheels and tires, the AMC Rambler/Scrambler had the smallest.

The RAIV just flat out cranked, although I did notice the car lift its ass end on launch, so I believe it may have had hop-stop (or no-hop) bars installed. This may explain why the GTO seemed to hook much better than the other cars.

BTW, I'm only here to gloat. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

Seriously, it was a very cool shootout, and I'm sure there will be lengthy debates as to why these cars ran quite a bit slower than what we've seen at the Pure Stocks. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Keith I second the motion, slicks and open headers,
How can you compare a motion car that was built for
10s to do the quater on red lines. And who gives Fiddlers
Fuddle duddle if the car stops on a dime. These cars were built to race the quarter mile not for roundi round oval tracks.
If your going to do a shoot out of classic muscle cars
then do them justice.

Was that Kevin Suydams Red Yenko Nova??? They said that car was a fresh restoration. If thats the car Kevin S. has, was it re-restored? and why? I thought it was pretty nice before. But I see the car on the show had all the SS stuff on it. Kevin's car didn't.. Just curious who knows more about that car. I know that's his yellow 69 Baldwin Motion Camaro. Who owns the other cars on that program?
Only problem I have with that show is it needed to be 6 hours long.. 1 hour for each car http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hi everyone,
I thought the Shootout was a fine show. We all know the Yenkos could have run better. The Goat ran even better then when it was new and looked great doing it. The Superbee ran fine and I know first hand those 440 six packs haul butt. I don't know much about the Shelby except I always like that bodystyle and the color of that one was cool. I must say I liked the the Hurst SC/Rambler the most!!! This little Underdog showed that it did run with the Big Boys and they told you if you tweeked it a little it would really fly. I know this to be true as I own a SC that is running the Cross-Ram intake. My SC was running the 1/4 in 12.61 back in the day. Maybe this was not as fast as a Yenko but it was faster then most for a lot less money. I was just honored that the Hurst SC/Rambler was included in this show. They have been overlooked as one of the best muscle cars ever built for to long. AMC even told you in their original ads that with a little sharp tunning you would be running 12's. Not bad for a car that cost under $3,000.00.
It was a fun show as it was ment to be. I know it was better then watching a show about Tunner cars http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif . To me this show was great and I didn't care which car won. They were all winners just by being on the show. A big thank you to all the owners that let them use their cars.
See my SC at,

I hope someone from here will email Joie some info about these great Yenko and Copo cars. We want to post correct information on these great cars and felt you guys would be the best place to find it. Email it to [email protected] .
If you guys know of any cool SC stories please post them on the forum page at the above site. If you won or lost to a SC on the streets or strips in the past we would like to hear about it.
Thanks,
Matt
PS: I can't believe it but I'm going to the Barrett Jackson auction this year. I'm just going to see the cars as they should be great. If there is a car there you guys would like pictures of let me know and I will post them for you when I get back.
