1967 Z-28 Project Car

I'm getting out of the high dollar stuff for a while, so my project car is for sale...

1967 Z-28 Project car. Factory Tuxedo Black, black deluxe interior, tach/gauges/console, fold-down seat, rear speaker, am radio, rear defogger, tinted-glass, 4.56 posi, style trim group (bright exterior trim). Since getting the car home and disassembling it, I do not believe that the motor or tranny are original to the car and I have just purchased replacements with correct dates and casting numbers with no VINS. I've had 2 PM's asking what happened to the original motor and tranny...the answer is I don't know and am still working back through the history of the car. When I bought it, the fellow I got it from wasn't completely number saavy and he originally thought that the '68 302 that was in it was original. I told him that it wasn't and showed him how to read the VIN etc. He gave me the numbers off of the tranny and the date was great, but he couldn't find the VIN number - I assumed he didn't know where to look and thought it was the original tranny - I was wrong http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif When we pulled the tranny last week, we found a Chevelle VIN I think 7K108580). I bought the car knowing it didn't have the original engine and started through the old titles. One call lead to another and I found a friend of an old owner who claimed to have the original block but it was scored in cylinder #1 - he wanted $500 for it, so I bought it and sent it directly to my engine builder. This guy is in the booney's so I assumed he wouldn't try a fast one and for $500 I was willing to take a chance. My engine builder called it a "bad restamp" and trashed it. The original top end was on the '68 motor, so I have that here. My engine builder had a mid June 657 motor so I bought that also and had him build me a 302 at 30 over and we brought the compression down to 10.5:1 to run on pump gas. The motor will be done by mid Jan and will have a 12 month warranty. I am buying a perfectly dated rebuilt M21 from Crash with factory assembly date and codes but no VIN.

I was also asked if I am really firm on the price and I absolutely will not budge $1. I love this car and if I can't get my price I will just postpone the resto and go one more summer without a driver. Frankly, if I could find someone that would do a decent paint job at a reasonable price, I would absolutely keep the car, but everyone I talk to only wants to do show quality work and that's not what I need nor what I wish to pay for if it's going to be driven. Which is OK by me as I got a lead on a body shop that might be able to do the work within the budget that I have for the car. Nice car and I would agree, a bit pricey for that color combination and one that appears to be relatively unrestored. Nice setting too. I like finding cars in places like that. Cool!

Here's an update for those keeping score on the car and the market http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif The deal with my friend fell through and included a driver trade. Outside of that I had an offer for $65K, but was not interested given that I've just put $7,500 in the drivetrain. One other person called yesterday and tried to negotiate, but I have taken the car off of the market and will stick with my original plan to make the car my cruise night car. As I have mentioned before, things always have a funny way of working themselves out. I reluctantly posted this ad on Friday morning before starting work. About 2 hours later, my new boss calls me in to talk about the 2007 bonus plan and mentions that a promotion that I was working towards in a year or so will come "sooner rather than later" and that he is very pleased with what I have done so far (saved them $100K the day before http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif). So, if all works out, the promo will more than cover a mortgage payment. We haven't had a mortgage for a few years and I wanted to keep it that way, but the reality is that I can always sell any cars that I have if things go sour again. Those who have been through an unexpected job loss will understand where I am coming from.

Two other interesting developments happened due to this ad...I have a lead on a local body shop that does great work at a reasonable price and we are checking it out tomorrow...and, someone who thinks they remember this car from 1975 contacted me and may know the student who was driving it to school at that time! This is where my previous research had gone cold, so this is a huge thing!!!
