did I say 2800? umm.. I meant 7800.. LOL
Yea Don do what I did,. Forget the scanner. Jast take digital pics OF the pics lol..
The story we got waas that this car was the Popular Hot rodding magazine test car in the sept 65 issue and a guy from flordia owned this and a yellow one. Mine had power windows and vacuum trunk release which he swapped out to the yelllow one..
The guy who bought it from Don promptly took it apart and from what I understand never put it back together.. That was in the mid 80's..

-----That Z16 was offered to me back in the 1970s when the guy in Fla. had it for sale. If memory serves (which is only a crapshoot at best) the car had a ZL1 motor in it as well. I never saw the car, but the pics showed just about every unboltable piece to be chrome. I believe that the car still exists and has either been reunited with its original engine or possibly has a clone engine in it. Others on this sight might know more about its present condition and whereabouts........Bill S

Very possible, Terry has owned 9(!) of 'em. But the Popular Hot Rodding mag car (Terry owned it, too) was never apart and still sports it's orig interior and a repaint. It recently sold at a record price for a regular production Z16. The previous high was $292k....

...was it all glass or a stock hood with scoop molded in?...
I'd put my money on mod/stock as wouldn't you think most guys would skip the individual CHEVROLET letters across the front on a glass replacement...or left them on the stock hood if changed as it would probably have been Ok?.
..........
I remember seeing an old 'Hot Rod' mag picture...pretty sure it was Z16 on a hoist showing the aftermarket rear axle cover that looks like a big flared turbo pipe outlet? .
Anyone remember this photo or have a pic of one of these covers...what were they called and who made 'em?http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif.

Yep, that's the pic I remember...and some hoist, I didn't remember it was a flying Z16! .
Crazy link Motion and unfriggin'believable units...I had no idea they were a real supercharger!!! .
And the Sizzler...you're right Bill, wonder where it ended up? .
Quite the claims on the power chart...over 1000 Hp out of the 409 second only to the Hemi! .
Must be '65 era as no 427 listed on the chart yet and that snowmobile is a 63/64 SkiDoo. .
Some of the other contraptions look 'interesting'...quite the machine w/ the two seats on page four that looks like it's a flying machine missing it's prop but is some kind of water skipper?
Love the pic of the go-cart guy beating the rail! .
Anyone here ever have one or any experiences around these units? .

now can somebody explain what the "turbonique" accomplishes when connect to the rear end?
(other than good air) http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
PeteLeathersac
01-06-2007, 07:18 AM
I believe it's really a small turbine jet engine that's output side is directly hooked up to the driven axle or prop or whatever the application may be. .
I'd expect it's only used for short runs and in the case of the Z16 or other vehicles w/ another primary engine source, you'd have to step on the clutch or disengage some way from the driven axle or you'd probably over-rev the primary engine. .
Whether you'd start moving with the primary engine then flash the jet power and disengage the primary or just run the jet alone from the start, I have no idea?http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif.
Either way, it's a cool new eBay search item!!! .

great pictures. It prompted me to ask, is a 3130 (dated 65) the correct carb for a Z16? I bought a nice never rebuilt one from a guy in florida and with it were the front clip (with 396 badging) and the fenders and hood were yellow, from a salvaged chevelle he said. All I have is the carb (I could not pass it up way back when for $100, I still have it in a display case, the 65 date code and original stampings on the bowls intrigued me but not my wife). It looks similar to my 3124 vette carb (but with fuel nut differences).

I know we discussed this a few years ago, but just what was the difference between the '65 396/375hp and the 396/425hp?

I own the 1960 corvette that belonged to the only holley guy that worked IN the chevy plant and traveled regularly to the proving grounds to tune the 1967 L88 cars (he was there from 60-80). He last told me how he adjusted the vent tubes on the 3124 carb when that setup that carb was being developed for 425hp chevy in the plant, I will ask him specifics on a Z16 396 setup related to a hydraulic lifter motor and post it here. I never thought to ask him about the 3130 I had that supposidly came off a Z16.
