A friend of mine was at an estate sale recently and bought a hood scoop that has the Ford logo on it. Also has the following numbers/letters:
GB-I
40-2696
DIWB 16C664 AA
It looks similar to a Boss 429 hood scoop. Anyone have any way of deciphering Ford part numbers? TIA http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif

First letter is decade, next number is year
example
C = 1960
D = 1970
C9 = 1969
D0 = 1970
D1 = 1971
It looks like the scoop is a 1971, assuming it is D1 and not DI

Speedrx,
That's good info to know. It brings one more question, though...if it is indeed 'D1', does that signify the year it was made, or the year of car it is made for? In other words, if something was made in 1975 for a 1971 car, would it be marked 'D1' or 'D5'? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif This is probably a dumb question to any Ford-knowledgeable people, but obviously I am not one of them http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Bill,
It primarily signifies the year of the vehicle but in some cases, parts are carried over another year. There is usually a separate date stamp on the part for when it was built.
I have seen C8 and C9 parts on 1970 Mustangs so you can assume it was on a 1971 and possible used for a few more years.
If someone has a Ford Master Parts catalog, they can look it up and get the exact years and application.
I am almost certain it is a hood scoop for a 1971 Mercury Cougar GT or 429.

The part numbering system is most indicative of when the part was engineered and began being produced. Like Speedrx says, some parts (if they were not changed) carried on for several years. But if there was a design change then the part number changed, just like every other company.
Occasionally these parts even preceded the model year. An example is the C3AE coded 406 block in my friends late production 1962 Galaxie. The actual casting date is from 1962 and precedes the build date of the car. The block design was apparently earmarked for 1963 production, but got "let out" early.
But most unique body and special hipo engine parts changed year to year, especially during the late '60's early '70's, so the part numbers are an excellent indicator for helping to determine application or originality.
