---Got an original regulator today dated 2E. Cant believe I cant remember how to figure the date. Is it 1962 or 1972??? The rest of the #s are 1119 and 515, but I believe those are on alot of these. Theres a good chance this came of a low mileage Corvette. Whats the consensus???.......Bill S

It should be May 72. In 62 the cars had generators so a different type of regulator was used.

Wasn't mid '72 when the balance of GM cars got the internal regulators...and earlier on the Vettes, 1969 maybe?http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif.
Maybe you're talking Window Regulators?http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif.

-----So,,,knowing that GM vehicles used internal regulators in 1972 would this regulator be over the counter or what???.......Bill S

It is part of the Delcotron alternators internals, not something you would buy aftermarket.
You can however buy all the internal stuff from different supplieres.

------Im sorry, Mike. I stated that badly even if you read the first post. I have a 1972 dated regulator just like the one that would come on a 1969 Camaro. Im asking wether this could have come on any 1972 GM vehicle or if it would have to be over the counter???......Bill S

The 10-SI internally regulated alternator didn't start until the 1973 model year, and on the Camaro, intermittantly throughout the year. This could be either an over the counter replacement, or one from a 1972 model.

------Ed,,,I do know that internal regulators first appeared in 1970 or so as my 1970 LT1 Corvette was so equipped. Matter of fact, it was the first thing I took the car in for warrantee about. You are saying, though, that regulators as I described in my first post were still installed on some GM cars in 1972, correct??? I would like to trade this regulator, which appears almost NOS, for a March or April 69 with a bit of cash if necessary........Bill S

Bill,
I'm not sure exactly when the SI started, but Colvin's book shows it starting in 73 (with the exception noted in my last post). My October 1972 P&A 30B (Corvette parts and Accessories Catalog) shows the externally regulated alternator was used up through the 1972 model year. The Corvette guys can verify this (or correct this) since the P&A has been known to have errors.

My 70 Chevy factory service manual shows both alternators ,internal and external regulators being used .I went to the G M tech center in 71 to learn the diagnostic and rebuild on the new alternator.

Usually you can go by the smooth/external or ribbed/internal style casings but always watch for the plug shape as the square plugs were external reg. units and the flat plugs internal type. .
Large case Heavy Duty units may have carried on longer as external type and explain the way the tech info reads, but on standard size casings I remember '72 being the changeover model year as that was the year they made the ribbed style casing in both external and internal regs during the transition...again watch for plug shapes...square plug = external and flat plug = internal type. .
I found this below online and it seems to go along exactly w/ what I recall from my days in the trenches. .
"...By 1969 GM introduced the 10SI Delcotron with its internal regulator on the Corvette and started offering it as an option on certain models. Within a few years the 10SI was standard equipment on all GM cars and trucks..."
