View Full Version : Question about day 2 engine mods

I have a fast question and I hope one or more of you can
put this into perspective for me.
I saw recently ( here ) that someone has/had a '68 SS Camaro
with an L-88 dealer conversion. Did this L-88 use the GM
intake for L-88's, or did it use a Torker type manifold?
( I hope I got the aftermarket intake name right ).
The intake I am wondering about is the one that set the Holley
carb on the intake at an angle so the throttle plates lined-up
over the runner openings. I'm not sure about the vintage
of this intake, so it may not have been available for such
a dealer conversion. I do believe that this intake was used
on the Baldwin Motion L-88 conversion.
Final question: Since the carb sits at such an angle to
the engine, I would suspect that the Camaro throttle rod
would not work properly. Was a cable used instead? If so,
what cable and cable bracket would have been used?

Nope, we just bent the rod a little and it worked like a charm. The Torker, if memory serves, was a late-70s intake and not really a "Day 2" intake. "Day 2" for a '60s musclecar would have to be something available the day after the car was sold new, maybe within a year or two later. Dual-plane intakes are probably most correct for proper '60s Day 2 modifications, in my opinion. The Torker strikes me more as a '70s "street machine" intake rather than a '60s Day 2 piece. But hey, run what you want to and have fun with it.
The Tarantula was an earlier manifold that Motion used----

Well Bill!
That explains why I once found a 2-piece SHP big
block rod that looked like it got into a fight.
Oddly, I saw a B-M Vette at the Forge Show a couple
of years ago and I swear it had the Torker intake on
it and the owner claimed it was a B-M day 2 mod.
Thanks,
Steve

Joe,
Does the Tarantula have straight runners and the canted
carb mounting configuration I mentioned? Perhaps I got
the intake name wrong.
Steve
Yes it did, on both counts----I got one from Motion when they first came out---early 70's.........

Yes! The Tarantula came before the Torker. Thanks for reminding me about that intake Joe, I'm not as old as you! (JOKE!) Wish I'd been there when you were though.
The Tarantula on the Motion Corvette would be correct Day 2--within a few years of the Corvette selling new--thanks to Joe's reminding me that it existed way back.

Tarantula intake for Big Block Chevy came out around Feb 71 according to a few magazine ads I've seen. Racers may have gotten then earlier. Edelbrock has a tech line and an email address you can contact with any questions you may have on this subject.
