Whats in the VIN or the trim plate on a 63 Galaxie 427 with a 2x4 carb set up to show it came that way from the factory?

Also wheres the Engine codes to ID the motor as a 427, and will it show that its a 2x4 engine?

It will have a R in the vin. I think the 425 hp 427 also has cross bolted main caps. You should be able to see the side main bolts sticking out the sides of the block just above the pan.

5th digit of the VIN is what you're looking for.
427 8V = R
427 4V = Q
406 6V = G
406 4v = B
390 4v = Z
Do the engine block check, casting numbers will be on the side (C3AE -M or AB) and the bolt heads just above the pan rail on the sides will be there on a 427. Cylinder heads will have casting numbers in the spaces between the exhaust ports- early cars will be C3AE 6090-D (Dec '62-Mar 15 '63) and later ones will be C3AE 6090 G or H (Mar 15 onward). This is key for value because almost every early 427 or 406 Galaxie that was pressed into duty as a regular car got fitted with a 390 later in life (mine had a '65 Mercury 390 2V in it). Assembling a correct 427 will end up costing you $6 to 10K. Look to see if it still has the long cast iron headers as they run $600-$1000 per pair. Trans will be a BW T10, but '64 Galaxie Toploaders are a common substitute. Car should have 3" front brakes, no power steering or brakes, and should show evidence of always being a stick car. VIN is on the firewall tab, trim tag, and there's a hidden one under the back seat, either on the front edge of the package tray or down toward the floor. VIN tag shows 3J66R for a 63 Galaxie 500 427/8v car. Org drivetrain is all there but half the car is not-->(Rusted away:( ) To bad they let it get so rusted out. Complete donor car would have to be found for the operation and I do mean operation.

Sigh. From what I can see on the tag, it was origially Champagne(code I) with a Red interior (code 95) delivered to Los Angeles sales district (DSO 71) running a 4 speed (code 5) feeding a 4.11 open rearend (code 9, posi-type diffs were letters). Somewhere in California there's a donor waiting to make this happen. Motor should be checked to make sure its still the 427 and if its seized, you've only got a .020 or .030 overbore possibility, and that's if there's no excessive core shift. Otherwise its sleeves. The main VIN is on the upper left corner of the firewall, right where all those leaves and crap are sitting. I'd make sure that was still intact before proceeding as well. No small task, but its definately more than tags and a title, right?

I remember looking at one of these back in 1986 at a place called the Toy Store here in Houston. The owner had just picked it up in Nashville TN and it was in pristine condition. Brown with tan interior, factory tach on the dash, 427, 4 speed, those dual 4 barrels, tubular looking exhaust manifolds, and the sound of those solid lifters. Very nice car but I wasn't into big Fords at the time.
The salesman wanted $6000 for the beast.
I wish I could turn back the clock.

Just under 5000 (4973 is one figure I've seen) 427 equipped full size Fords were apparently made in 1963. These Galaxie 500 Sportsroof (aka fastback) models were probably the most popular. Custom 300, Galaxie, Galaxie 500 and Galaxie 500XL were the trim levels.

Its here on Oahu. Place its sitting at right now (A body shop!!!) is about 3 blocks from the ocean. That along with being in the wettest part of Oahu didnt help it any??

Working with sea salt spray/mist is the worst. It eats from the inside out, and contaminates the metal. You might be able to save some of the body, but you're going to need another donor body for a lot of the panels.Worst part with sea spray is that the inner structure/supports are usually gone too. Is that Volusia County FL ? Somewhere between the college at Deland and the Daytona speedway there was an encounter with that Sheriff that involved a Mustang GT 5.0, a ride in that squad car and an orange canvas jumpsuit.

Yes it is...he bought this POS and had it restored with taxpayers money, nice.
Was that 'encounter' recent? That particular car was only completed 3 or 4 years ago.

Get a couple of the Competition Proven By Holman Moody decals to cover the holes and drive it. What a car. What a shame. They honestly don't rust that bad in Nova Scotia and we can taste the salt in the air.

From Mr. Stefina, who has a '64 R code Merc that runs low, low 13s and a '58 430/400 Merc that's just a tick slower...anyway:
R-code engines in 1963:
3857 R code
1038 Q code
3465 406 w/3x2
1157 406 w/4-barrel
Best as I can tell from talking to him, you can't get exact on production figures, but extrapolate the info via percentages and engine build numbers...so your mileage may vary!
