Restoration Rights, need some advice

Need some advice on how to handle a situation. I found out today that the body shop that was working on my L-78 Camaro has been locked down by the landlord of the building. Notices have been posted that nothing can be removed from the building. I got in touch with the body shop owner today and he indicated that he had been locked out because of a dispute on the lease. My best guess is that he is behind on rent. I also was able to get the name of the landlord and plan on contacting him tomorrow.

My questions would be this:

What legal rights does the landlord have to seize my personal property, the car? I understand that he may have some claim to the owners property but how does my car come into play.

Obviously my first priority is to get the car back, then my next question will be how to get some of my money back that has been advanced on the body work. I have a contract for the restoration and some work has been done. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm sure the best thing would be to get an attorney.

Get an attorney immediately. Get the attorney to write up a firm letter to the landlord giving him notice that the car is yours and that you may hold him responsible for anything which occurs to it as a result of his actions. In the letter, you should state that you are demanding the ability to immediately remove of the car. You should also include proof that the car is yours. Do not wait. Send the letter no later than tomorrow. You never know what is happening in the background.

Move quickly and frimly....get a "good" local attorney who knows how to deal with this type of problem. You may also want to reach out to the local authorities to advise them of your situation..but see what the lawyer says....move fast!!

I had this exact situation happen to me many years ago. The advice regarding the lawyer and police contact is definitely the answer. For me, contacting the landlord with a "firm psychotic threat" was the key...got the car out from behind bars! Whatever your course of action, do this IMMEDIATELY ! ! !

Just wanted to thank everyone that gave me advice on this matter. Once the landlord understood that this was my car he was very helpful. I picked up the car this week and it has now found its way to a very reputable body shop.
