View Full Version : Any list of where '69 Camaro ZL-1s are?

Is there any compiled list of what has happened to the cars? My father was the original owner of one. I know that it was fathom green. He purchased it at Lawrence Hall Chevrolet in Texas, but I think it was ordered from another dealership.
After a few years, my father decided to sell it because he needed a truck. He traded it in and then had second thoughts about it and went to get it back. Unfortunately, as soon as it had been traded in, it was sold. A man had been calling the dealership for 3 years about the car.
Anyway, I was just trying to find out some info about the car. The color narrows it down to 12 cars, but other than that, I have no idea which one it was.
Thank you for any help,
Allison

Welcome to the site Allison.
I would speculate that the car your father owned was most likely one of the first 50, and probably one of the ones that was sent back to GM by Fred Gibb Chev. The additional 19 ZL1's appear to have been specifically ordered by their selling dealers, as opposed to 'fleet' ordered like the Gibb cars.
Using this speculation would narrow down the possibles from 12 to 10 by eliminating car #'s 60 & 65.
It would help if you could tell us if your father's car was an automatic vs. a 4 speed, this way we could narrow it down to 1 of 4 a/t's vs. 1 of 6 4 speeds.

It was a 4 speed, not an automatic.

So, I guess that means that it is possibly the #36? I saw a thread on it and sent the owner a message to see if he knows any of the history on the car.

#36 Would be my guess.

I found out last night that he actually was one of the ones that purchased the car in 1970. Does this still go along with #36?

I'm not sure what you mean with this question. I don't know very much about the history of #36, but since it's a FG, 4sp car originally from Gibb - it has a higher probability of being dealer transferred to another dealer.

I'm just guessing it was one of the ones that did not sell in 69... Didn't they have a hard time selling them at first? I thought I remembered reading somewhere that about 30 unsold cars were returned to Chevy and it took until the early 70s to sell them off.

Yes, that is correct. I would speculate that your dad's car was one of the cars sent back, and dealer transfered from Gibb to another dealer.
I vaguely recall that #36 was found in MD or VA, and had it's vin mis-registered with the state. I'm not sure that the subsequent owners found out which dealer it was sold from. Does your dad have any paperwork from the car, old registrations, insurance papers, loan documents... anything?

I don't think so. I don't even think he has any photos of it. I told him about one going up at auction for $880,000 and he was pretty shocked (I know they all don't go for that). I told him he should have just parked it in a garage and never traded it in. I guess back then he didn't fully realize what he had.

What did your dad do with the car while he owned it? Was a daily driver, street racer, weekend warrior.... Any cool stories about outrunning the cops...

And some of them are saying that from just a couple of years back! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
Welcome Allison. I'm betting you'll find the answers to all your questions right here. You're off to a pretty good start with ol' YDR. He seems to know a 'little' about these cars (http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif ), and there are a few more here who can fill in the other blanks.
Let me be the first to say that we'd all be interested in ANYTHING your Dad has to offer in the way of information or stories about the car. That's how the history of these things is compiled; from first-hand information. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif
( http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif OK, so I'm the SECOND one to ask!)

Some of them did like the three original Gibb car owner and sYc members, Ray Morrison (68 427 Gibb Nova), Ken Barnhardt (69 ZL-1 Camaro) and Dennis Cumby (70 Gibb LS-6). http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

It was a daily driver. My dad originally wanted the corvette, but because he was 21, they said there was no way anyone would insure him. The dealer then told him there was a special car that he could order for him that would be every bit as fast and he would be able to get insurance on it.
My dad purchased it right after he got out of the marine corp and kept it a few years while he attended college.
He has told a few stories dealing with cops. One of the funniest ones happened in Hamlin, Texas. He and a friend were at a red light and a cop pulled up beside him. His friend told him that if he didn't floor it, he didn't have any "guts" (not term he acutally used). Light turns green and my dad went through all 4 gears sitting still and the chase was on. My dad a lead on him and he knew a dirt road which led to a bridge you could park under and not be seen. Well, he slowed down just enough to make the turn, he thought. Instead, he ended up high-centering in the ditch. By the time the cop arrived, my dad and his friend were sitting on the trunk waiting.
The cop took my dad to jail, but ended up making a deal with him. There was a kid out there with 3 warrents. The cop told me dad that if he brought that kid in, they would just give him a ticket for exhibition of excelleration. My dad went and found the guy and told him he needed to go and turn himself in. The guy said he knew, but he wasn't going to. My dad ended up grabbing the guy, dragging him to his car, and hauling him to the Hamlin jail...

That's what I mean! How many guys would drive a ZL-1 down a dirt road and hide it under a bridge now? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks Allison! That's the kind of stories we like to hear, http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Keep 'em coming - there has to be more wild nights. If you dad was willing to drop a car length on the law at a stoplight - imagine what he hasn't told you - yet?

This is sort of off-topic, but there is a movie that I cannot remember the name of. The movie is about a young guy who is sort of a trouble maker and I believe it is a 69 or similar camaro that he drives. I know one scene is set as you come into the town of Anson from Abilene. I can't even remember who was on it, but it has come on tv a few times. The car is supposed to match the era, so it was either filmed in the 70s or made to look like it was.
Anyone got any ideas?

Actually, should I move the movie question to another area, like the lounge or start a new topic with it?

Another story... (and after remembering this story, my dad must have gotten the car while on leave from the marines.)
My dad was on the rifle team at Lamp Leguene. He enlisted at one of the worst points in his life. He was headed down the wrong path and needed to do something. After he enlisted they went through the basic stuff and then they had to go out to the shooting range. After they all shot, they told everyone to leave, but told my dad to stay. He was to pack his bags as he was going to the rifle team. Turns out he had broken the range record. Anyway, he was in the marines for his two years and then he had had enough. They offered him $10,000 to stay plus a promotion, but he declined.
He headed home to Anson, TX from North Carolina in the camaro. Somewhere along the way, he got pulled over doing 125 mph. The cop followed him to a rest area where he asked all sorts of questions about the car. He ended up giving my dad a warning, but told him that he was going to call ahead to all of the other towns and he better not be speeding when he got to them.
Shortly thereafter it began raining very hard. As my dad slowed down for a 4-way stop on a cobblestone street, the car began to slide. He did 360s the entire way through the intersection. It was at that time that he told himself that he was too tired and his reflexes were too shot to be driving that fast.
