First question: My L78 came with a am/fm/8 track radio. The kick panels had cut-outs for speakers, the dash has one and the rear deck has holes for two. Are all 5 speakers used? What ohm? Does the radio only play in the dash and the 8 track in the kick panels and rear deck, like my '69 Impala?

Question 2: Does this car use a EEC gas tank or non-EEC? Off the cuff I would guess EEC as it has all the smog and TCS stuff???

With ya'lls ( GA term) help I may eventually get this project finished and quit bugging everyone!!

I'm not sure there should be speakers in the front kick panels, just the dash. There is a fader for the rear speakers, but it's a 3 speaker system.

The car most likely does not have an EEC tank, unless it was a CA car. The TCS was new for '70, and the EEC was new for '71.

I had a factory am 8 track in my L78. It had 5 speakers just like you described. Great sound. Zeplin's whole lotta love, would almost make you dizzy. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

thanks for the input. I believe the kick panel speakers were used only for the 8 track. There is a section in the assembly manual that shows how to install but doesn't really tell much about their function. I did find out that it requires 8-10ohm speakers.

As a matter of fact, I still have that Zepplin 8 track and am looking forward to hearing it in the car. Thanks for your help.

If you're talking about the single one piece unit, that was New for 1970,that combined the in dash AM/FM 8TK unit as a Stereo radio, not a Mono.
It needed 4 speakers to reflect this.
I didn't think the Nova dashpads had 2 corner speakers to take advantage of this,so it sounds like they installed kickpanel speakers, along with installing two rears in the package tray provisionals,to let you experience the full 4 channel effect.
Both the radio station and 8Tk tape mode would be heard through all 4 speakers.
The center speaker was for Mono radios only,so this stereo unit would have ommited using that 5th center speaker originally.
Both front & rear were 10 Ohm speakers.Fronts being 4X6,and rears 6X9.
As stated,RPO NA-9 aka EEC,(Evaporative Emission Control- aka Charcoal Cannister),equipped gas tanks were for vehicles that were sold BRAND new in the states of Calif.and certain areas of Nevada.
Not at all related to TCS,(Transmission Controlled Spark),or SMOG aka A.I.R.(Air Injection Reactor).

Thanks MR70, my unit is a combo am/fm/8 track and the kick panels were already cut and appeared to be factory, which was confirmed by the assembly manual but was not sure about the dash speaker. I will omit that one and install the other 4. The car was in pieces and I had the radio rebuilt but was not sure how it was supposed to be hooked up. I did not know what EEC stood for, figured emmissions related and since the car had all the other emmissions stuff it needed this tank as well. Thanks so much for your help.

CD ignition and solid core ignition wires weren't AM friendly---I could tune the engine by the ignition static on the radio.. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif---I gave in and installed one of these.... http://www.yenko.net/attachments/251805-kraco.jpg

Me too Pete. I seem to remember Lear?? jet or something like that and the old base 48's with a piece of paper wedging the old ac/dc 8 track over so it would play close to the right speed. I thought all of my 8 tracks were long gone but I found them all in a box this week buried in the furnace room. Too funny. Not like me to keep everything

The LearJet 8 track was a Yenko catalog option.

Marlin. I may still have it since I never sold the car but took it out when I got the original 70 gm track fixed. It was a under dash mounted unit. Do you want it if I can locate it

In all honesty, I don't know if that dash speaker was there. I remember fading in in frt to back, and lft to rt, but that's about it. You may be right. Perhaps the dash speaker was deleted with the upgrade to 8 track. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif
