Just an interesting note: my unrestored 12k mile L78 has a 430 starter which I believe is correct for a truck with a BB. Of course I had some points taken away from me when the car was at Carlisle, but after confirming again from the orignal owner that the starter has never been replaced or even taken off the car, the judges offered to ammend the score sheets.

I believe the 430 is correct for an automatic car, at least it is in 1970...is yours an auto..???

Pardon my stupidity, what the H*** is an automatic? On a serious note, it is a M-21 and the 430 is dated correct for my 12B of 68 car.

Jeff, I don't know what to tell you about that number on a 4spd car.....I will check some info and let you know what I find.....don't see why there would be a difference between Camaro and Nova...but you never know. I have an 8L4 dated 418 if you know someone who needs one..

..what's wrong with automatics..?? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Ok. You guys have me totally confused.
My experience is chevelle amd impala but chev would not have changed camaro/ nova in my mind.
The 430 starter is a auto starter so it cannot be factory correct for your 4spd car, 418 is the standard starter.
As I remember it 68 used the 365 for both standard and auto applications.
69 the 418 for either application
In 70 they used the 430 al nose for autos and the cast 418 nose for manuals.
Also the originals had a black delco remy embossed cap vs a brown cap on the service replacements. What does yours look like???
Are you 100% sure the 8 you are seeing on the 430 is not a zero. I can see why the judge would have taken the points away.
Please clear my confused mind. Our 68 impala has a manual 430 on it but that is what the dealer installed when the 365 went. They basically stripped the 430 auto and converted it. The nose is cast off the 365.
