Hi all !

I have a fast question I'm sure someone can answer rather
quickly. A friend is restoring an 02-C-1970 L/78 Nova and
we ran into a problem with the brakes. Disc brake Nova's
used two different junction blocks, brake valves, and
pressure regulator valve setups depending on the build date.

We believe there were two different setups used ( early vs.
late ). It appears that the early build used the same setup
as that used on the 69 Camaro.

Can anyone tell me what the cutoff date was for one setup
vs the other? Also, if we need the later setup, can
someone post an image of the complete assembly at the
master cylinder location so we can see the routing of the
lines, etc.?

Thanks,
Steve

I don't think the cutoff date has been determined. There are mid-year 69's without the block on the subframe, and early '70's with the block on the subframe. So, it's best to use what you found. If everything was missing, and you don't know, go without the block on the frame. Check out Gregg Robert's site for pics, someone's got a link I'm sure.

There was never a block on the frame. The original line is still there but thats it all else is gone.I have a good reference picture that shows the brass Texas shaped valve mounted to the right (pass side) of the master. And the pic.also shows a brass distribution block with 3 segments. What I mean by 3 segments is the forward junction for front lines,Then the balance switch then a junction for the line from the Texas valve to the rear brake line. And lastly a junction at the rear of the block that accepts the line from the rear port of the master to the Texas valve. Is this set-up common on the late 70 novas?

That's the general setup, but something doesn't look quite right. I'm going from memory here, but I believe there should be a plated steel bracket that holds the proportioning valve to the booster stud. I'm not sure how the one in the pic is attached. Also, make sure you use a m/c with dual bleeders, painted black.

The bracket is there is the pic.but not seen at that angle.I have the M/C with the dual bleeder,But painted black?

Pictures below of Jack Seymours unmolested, survivor 70 Z-28 with SAME parts you are refering to. Also pic of Dale R's ORIGINAL owner 70 L-34 Camaro showing black M.C.
M.C. lid should also be Yellow Zinc and Hold Down bail was natural steel (but most restorers paint with "natural" stainless steel paint)

L-shaped bracket swedged to brass valve should be Yellow Zinc DiChromate plated, as well as curved shaped bracket supporting Unpainted Cast Iron prop valve.
All the special locking nuts securing M.C. to booster and Booster to Firewall are Clear Zinc (silver) plated.

Also, what is the generally accepted practice of preserving a freshly yellow zinc coated booster.? clear it.? boeshield it.? nothing .? Thanks again

The only paint that will hold up to the brake fluid is POR 15.And for the booster I just keep it wiped down with Super Lube.

Try turning it around and using silicone brake fluid...then you don't risk damaging paint or plating...we use it on all the restored cars...

Some semi black spray bomb choices are KRYLON 1613, RUSTOLEUM 7777, etc etc.........

I would think any of the GOOD Rust Inhibiting sprays on Yellow Zinc.........used consistently would help the plating survive........(I am NOT a fan of WD-40, versus BoeShield, Fluid Film, etc)
