Hey Guys , I was askin on teamchevelle and one directed me over here . I know where a Alum. BBC block is and numbers are 0-326711 ....it's the first block listed on mortec.com . The guy wants a healthy price but not sure if it's real healthy . I heard they were put in factory race cars and only produced about 30 somethin . It needs all new sleeves and a couple head bolt holes repaired but other than that , it's nice . My buddy said the last time he saw one ...it brought $7500 about 3 years ago . I don't really know what it came in and wondered yalls opinion on the value ? Thanks

The '0-' on the front of the number usually means experimental or pre-production. It could be a prototype block. Soem collectors will pay more for those rare items but it's hard to put a real number on it.

Richard,
I'd suggest posting some images of the block, detailing
the part numbers, date codes, other stampings, etc.. I'd
also like to see the snowflake embossed logo to the upper
left of the timing cover if you can post that. Some members
here can then better inform you of what you have.

Hey , it has no snowflake , the part # 0-326711 is on the frt. and back along with WDC (winters ? casting )??? , no dates , S15 on one part of the bellhousing , a number that is about 5-6 digits stamped in the frt. around the water pump hole ? that I forgot to get . He wants $10,500 and I thought there was plenty of room on the table to make a lil since its rarity and the ZL1's bringin 25-30K ??? Any input greatly appreciated .....2 guys are now saying it was a prototype canam block . The guy that has it says he has a drag racing article with Grumpy Jenkin's car pictured with this block in it , but another guy said that's wrong because Grumpy's car block had to come in a production car like the ZL1 ?? Is the price cheap , high , right on , or what ....I don't want it to slip away ? Thanks , Richard

Richard,
This is out of the realm of my knowledge on the ZL-1 blocks.
If it is a Can-Am block, perhaps someone here can help you
figure out the approx. value. I however think your assumed
value is very high. The ZL-1 blocks are bringing crazy $$,
but I don't think this one fits that category.
Take a look at this recent eBay auction for a Zl-1 block
for reference. Good luck!

Hey Steve , I don't feel it falls in the ZL1 cat. either , but you know how crazy this stuff is now . I saw a ZL1 block not too long ago at like $25,000 ...auction ended early , motor was ready to go authenticated , prior crack damage , and there's an active ZL1 on there now at $10,000 with no reserve met and a few days left .....it's a raw casting that would need a few thousand dollars to finish machine everything if you took it to a top of the line shop . I'll keep digging and appreciate any contacts I could get in touch with . Thanks , Richard

Richard,
Those "rough casting" ZL-1 blocks are a real oddity. I have
as of yet to hear anyone bringing one of those to a useable
state ( post machining ). The cost to do so would have to
be prohibitive. That is, assuming anyone could find a shop
with capabilities to fixture a rough casting, do all the
necessary machining, and get it perfect. The gun drilling
for the oil galley's alone would be near impossible to get
right.
If any members here know of a shop with the capabilities to
perform the necesssary machining operations to bring a rough
casting ( block ) to a buildable state, please let me know.
I'll then bid on the next rough casting ZL-1 block I see. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

Hey Steve , I wondered if that block could be actually finished myself . I did some more research on the block i'm lookin at and it was definately a prototype block ....says all "0-" blocks were and production was supposedly for over the counter sales , but GM made sure that didn't happen because they wanted these blocks in a select fews hands . Where would you try to sell this rare piece and whom to (EBAY) ? Sounds as if this block is more rare than the actual ZL1 , but i'm at a loss as to the TRUE VALUE also . Thanks , Richard

Hey Kurt , thanks so much for that tip .....that guy is like a friggin GOD .....he actually worked in the development dept . and said he can fix me a packet up with authenticity .....where the block went in and all . He said it was a prototype and actually more rare than the ZL1 ....said one block like mine is in a true ZL1 . Think about it .....you can say you have a ZL1 with the prototype block in it .....what's that prototyped engine equipped car worth ....certainly more rare than the ZL1 equipped car ??? The block I now have is actually a ZL1 with different #'s which designate it prototype instead of the GM part numbered ZL1 . If you look on mortec.com ....my block is listed the very first one in line as can am . 0-326711 . Thanks so much for you guys help and keep ant further info comin if you don't mind . Sincerely , Richard

Neat but a ZL1 would be more correct with it's correct block.

Think the guy was talking about Grumps 1970 with 430cube Reynolds block. Big cubes short stroke, nice combo
