Here's my contribution. Sorry if they're a little blurry.
This 69 Camaro SS/RS 396/375 was a recent find and is unrestored. John Platania will have more info on it.

Did I see a Chevelle in there with Cowl plenum induction?
What's that all about?

1 of 1 Cherokee! That looks awesome. I'd love to hear the
story on that car. I've never seen or heard of it before.

Rixls6

Here's a couple more pics of the 69 Chevelle with cowl plenum. I tried to talk to the owner, but kept missing him. There was a buildsheet laying in the open trunk, but never got a good look at it. The car had all kinds of options like chambered exhaust, rosewood wheel, rear defog, etc.

That 1 of 1 1969 Camaro looks an awful lot like a '67. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
Very cool styling exercise. I'd really like to hear the story of how it got away from GM. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
Very impressive lineup of cars, I hope the show was as well attended as the cars were nice! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

if you look at the first "9" in 1969 it does not resemble the last digit which is an obviously funky "7" http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Rick,

On second thought, wasn't the cowl plenum set-up an over the
counter service item back in the day? I seem to remember
seeing a complete set-up on ePay a couple of years ago that
the seller claimed to have originally purchased in exactly
this way. Anybody know for sure? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif

Steve

Mr70
03-05-2007, 03:17 AM
Yes it was an over the counter fantasy option.
The Monaco Orange 69 Chevelle belongs to a close friend of mine here, that just came out of resto last November and debuted at RM VFest 11/06.
It was delivered originally as a 396/325HP and painted Fathom Green.
He wanted to do his Chevelle his way,so he added a boxed frame,L78 engine, acquired a Cowl Plen-(advertised from crashes buddy on this very site),Rosewood St. wheel,Rear defog,Chambered exhaust, under dash 8 track player etc.
He does not claim any of it to be original,it's just suits his tastes.
Nice car,even nicer guy. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Yep.....Webbers on a mocked up block for display..Very cool car..The deck lid was hand laid over the top of the factory steel inner structure..Same with the rear fender extensions...I was able to get a very nice view of the inside of the trunk..Power windows, and a special one off leather wrapped walnut style steering wheel. The hood tach looked like a Pontiac unit with a Chevrolet decal over the Pontiac lettering..A fun car to look at with some cool history... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

As usual, had a great time at Chevy Vettefest. Many thanks to Bob Ashton and his crew for their hospitality, treating the sYc as royalty. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Congrats to Shor and the SCW gang for their Gold Spinner/Top Gun. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif

One of many highlights was a special guest on Sunday, Lynn Yenko, Don’s oldest daughter, and Yenko Chevrolet employee. Was neat watching her and BKH look at a picture of the Yenko dealership and reminisce about how it was back then? Also, as they did at SCR9, Lynn and Nancy Gibb spent time talking about how it was to grow up around a Chevy dealership. Topping things off was a TV crew interviewing Lynn and Helen Gibb, to air in and around Chicago in a few weeks.

Lynn and her son Alex, as well as Helen and Nancy, will be attending SCR10. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

The Camaro was in the BRIC brochure of the Can Am reunion last summer, the picture was just after Canada Corner coming up the hill. I've seen footage on Speed Vision of the September Can Am race with this car pacing the warm up lap.
It's in many pictures and paintings of the Start/Finish line on the main straight at Road America. I've always wondered what the story was on the car. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif

Some of the other guys may still post after they get home. I saw a few that were from out of state.

The show apparently was short 60 no-shows because of the weather. It was very quiet there when I arrived Saturday about 9AM. It never did get real busy as far as attendance, at least on Saturday.

So many people to Thank, so tired right now and have to be at Cobo in Detroit first thing in the morning for Detroit Autorama.

I agree...the sYc members DO need to have some kind of "I.D." tag so I can put some faces with the names I know so well on this sight.

Just wish I could have more time to spend with all of you, what a great group of people. Awesome people, awesome cars and all kinds of great stories. This is what makes all the late nights, early mornings and long hours all worthwhile.

The Nickey Chicago display was incredible and looked to be the "Hot Spot" of the show all weekend.

Great to get to spend a few brief moments with Lynn Yenko and as always, a real pleasure (and honor) to chat with Helen.

We lost 61 cars due to the weather but as I said, there are ots of things I can control but weather isn't one of them!

As expected, the response from participants and spectators alike strongly favors the Rosemont facility, and we have committed to more floor space, so Rosemont here we come November 18-19, 2007.

Lots in store for the Fall '07 show, yes indeed.

Looking forward to having a chance to really sit and spend some quality time with many of you at SCR-X.

THANKS!!!

Bob,
Hope you can come on down for the Thursday evening party. Kick back, have a couple of cool drinks and RELAX for a change. Also glad to hear about Fall plans at Rosemont again. Like I said before, a lot of us were skeptical of the move but I think most everyone prefers that venue now. We're makin' plans to come back in Nov/07 if you'll have us.

Congrats to all the Winners:

If you have not seen a SCW restoration up close and personal, then you are truely missing out.

I know that other sYc members also took some awards home:

Joe Sapp's Copo Camaro was awarded a Bowtie Boulevard Gold

Brad Kosic's L78 Nova was awarded a Gold Spinner

We had a few Judged as well:

'62 Corvette 340 hp; Silver Spinner

Stefano,

You forgot Albert.....who won Silver Spinner.....my opinion should have won Gold.

Albert....a CE block is the next best thing to the original born with engine...JMO.

OK, message received. Maybe something we can do for SCR X that can be used at future shows? The wheels are turnin'.

Thanks Dan..first my thanks to Bob and his crew for a excellent show. I have worked several shows and it takes lots of effort to pull one off especially one this size. I also agree with Dan that achieving a Gold Spinner was on my list of accomplishments for my car but a CE block does not qualify as a valid engine code so a automatic 40 point deduction. Not to pick on one car directly or complain, but the orange 69 L-78 with cowl plenum..an orignal 325 hp car converted to L-78 with a L-78 motor code on the pad can win gold..doesnt seem fair! Seems to me that there is too much emphasis on motor codes on the block but none on verifying what was orginally in the car( vin/factory paper ) But I had fun..saw some old friends..made some new ones ...arrived back home safe and sound and I still have my COPO so all is not bad, although another Vettefest does not seem to be in my future.

Sorry Al, I forgot about your situation. Your car is certainly Gold Spinner quality. What's is the deal with CEs/Judging? I thought those rules were changed?

Al I don't remember anything about the CE block deduction. Outrageous I'd say. Your car is an prime example of a quality restoration deserving no less than a gold. Should have been a gimme. It was great having you out in our neck of the woods. Sorry about the show results cause we'd sure enjoy having you back. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

To only lose 19 points in all other areas proves it is a Gold Spinner car.

Too bad the CE block is a 40 point deduct, maybe this is something Bob and his staff can address for future shows. IMO, to encourage restamping is not good for our hobby.

Exactly my thinking Tom... now what happens if the car is a known restamp or deemed a restamp once checked by the judges? What is the total point deduction then? It seems to me like a CE block is a much better alternative than a restamp...

Sorry to hear that Al. Your car is Gold Spinner quality for sure. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

The way I understand, all is required is for the pad to have the proper code, such MN, MO, etc, and the judges are not really concerned when, how and by whom the code was stamped.

I do not think it would be in the best interest of VF to really check for accurate pad stamps. Talk about opening a can of worms.

I had heard the Corvette folks had adopted the policy of the pad must contain the correct code, promoting restamps, but never gave it much thought until Sunday.

IMO, the wrong code (block) should be a minor deduct, same as any other engine part (intake, carb, etc).

Until then, folks such as Al have two options, 1. restamp, or 2. regardless of how nice their car is, be subjected to an automatic 40 point deduct.

Since I am not (and really don't want to) be involved in the Judging procedures and policies other then to be sure they are followed, prehaps Dru can shed some light on this?

Do you guys feel the 40 point deduct is too severe?

Help me out here, Dru and any other VF Judges!

Anyway, I will discuss this with Bill Braun, our Judging Supervisor.

Thansk for the feedback.

Kasey...that has a lot to do with what is already booked at the convention center. Tough call. To be honest, it probably wouldn't have caused such a stir if it hadn't been one of our own it affected. I know that's not fair, but we DO tend to be a little over-protective of the good guys here. ALbert is one of those! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Before leaving, a group of us there discussed this, including a couple of judges, and no one felt the 40 point deduct was fair, as it encouraged folks to restamp, which goes against what we are trying to accomplish in our hobby.

Bob,
Bill asked me last fall to start working up a revised judging system for the show. I was able to give him 3 "new and improved" versions utilizing a few of the positive aspects used by other shows/organizations. In all three proposals, the points allocated to the engine pad are significantly reduced on a percentage basis of the total. The points allocated to the casting number and date will carry more weight than the pad.
If a decision is made to move forward with the project soon, we probably could have new sheets ready for at least some of the classes, for the fall show.

Tom,
NCRS acknowledges the fact that many vintage Corvettes have lost their original engines somewhere in their life and have allocated points to reflect this fact. A 1963-67 Corvette presented for flight judging with a blank pad will lose 50 points (25 for the assembly portion and 25 for the VIN derivitive) out of a total of 4510 (slightly more than 1%) assuming the pad surface has a typical factory finish (broach) and that it uses a correct casting number for the application and an appropriate casting date. I believe the other classes are similiar.
Within the Bloomington Gold guidelines however, the highest award possible with a block that does not have the assembly code and VIN matching the car it is in, would be a Silver Certificate.
I'm not condoning the fact that these policies encourage restamping, just stating what is acceptable to these groups.

Chris, thanks for the information regarding how the Vette guys address this issue.

Good to hear VF is looking at their judging system, at least our side of things. As we learn more and more about how these cars were built, thus how they should be restored, judging criteria should reflect this.

allthough I wasnt there but I have seen Alberts car in person, what more can anyone do other than restamp? That car is top notch in my book and not to award Alberts car a gold and give another without the original motor gold seems very unfair. Why give a gold spinner to a car thats not matching #s and not give one to someone who acually has warranty paperwork ? Too bad the judges really dropped the ball on this one. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsdown.gif
