I gotta be honest and say that those are some of the best vintage drag racing photos that I've seen in a long time. I've grown very tired of seeing all the nationally-known cars back then and love to see photos like these of a typical weekend at the smaller strips with the local heroes battling it out back then. Every photo with an unknown car is a treat. Thank you very much for taking the time to post them. More please!

Man Dog you are the man! All these cars with the tow tabs and wiring the exhaust pipes with a piece of tye wire out of the way when they got uncorked for the strip is really bringing back memories. Put these on a CD and I will buy one. I bet most here on this site will too. Thanks, Sam

These vintage photos show why so many of our generation are so crazy about the old musclecars. Either at our local track, and/or on the steeet, we were all doing it. As Archie Bunker would say, "man, those were the days". Thanks for sharing. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Loved your shots also - the good old days - 29 cent gas - someone else looking to race at almost every light - and more tracks open every weekend then you could go to!!
Maybe sYc should start a forum just for all these old shots so they just don't disappear with time among all the other posts. Either way keep 'em coming they are great!!

Sam,
I've been fortunate to call Joel Naprstek my friend, and most of the photos were given to me from him. In good conscience, I could never put them on a CD and make them available. He has a collection of hundreds if not thousands of old grass roots photos, not just "name" cars. He'd be the right one to put them on CD.

Finally found Gene Carter's "Thumper". It was one of only 142 '61 409s produced. (after Jan.) The body side molding insert is keyed to the interior color, which indicates 2nd half of the model year. Earlier cars were all black or white. Rumor says this car was destroyed, but I'm not positive of that. Car had the Walt Disney "Thumper" rabbit painted on the deck lid.

More old Jersey stuff:
This '60 Convertible was known as Benney and the Buzzard (or BuzzardI). It was Benny Richardson and Bruce Bazaz. Pretty sure this is Island.
http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j320/VerneFrantz/BUZZARD1.jpg
This is '62 Island, and Bruce Bazaz' BuzzardII when it was owned by Danny Digiacomo(sp?) vs his main local competition at Island that year, the Coast Automotive/Reiman Dodge 413 called the Red Ram, run by a guy named Whitey . This car is now painted black and tucked away in a garage in NJ waiting to be re-born.

The Strickler / Jenkins Hi-Performance Clinic
Back in the sixties / seventies GM would foot the bill for traveling performance clinics such as this one. A post card in the mail was all it took to bring out the loyal following.
This was quite a show, Grumpy and Dave were both there with a bunch of cars and the latest GM high performance parts and accessories.
Curry Chevrolet had the rest of the service department filled with the hot local street and race cars. It was not close by and unfortunately I forgot my camera in the rush to get there!

Found this car in late 70's at the end of a dead end street in Franklin Sq, where it had sat for some time with the left front brakes off on a jack stand and a for sale sign. Knocked but never went back - it was just an old Chevy back then!!

Saw this car with no motor or trans - laying on the ground at Mr Bigs Performance in Elmont a few years after this shot - was a nice car - hope it was saved - green & yellow flake

[b] Outcasts Racing Team
These guys were out at Hampton all the time. They would have at least 4 or 5 good running cars every weekend.
The thing I remember most is a car carrier they had. Molded to the roof was about a '66 Charger body - it was the complete interior from the firewall to the back of the rear window. It had the front bucket and a rear seat and 4/5 people would ride up there. It was a real clean job and I believe it had a/c. Wish I had Taken a picture!

That shot was taken in June of 1970 at West Hampton. The car was a 409 - 4 bbl with a 4 spd that was from the Bronx somewhere up near West Chester County. It was always around and ran like hell. That's all I remember, I'll see if I have any other shots - but I don't recall any.
Thanks

Hey Verne, that "360 HP" lettered hood on the '61 Biscayne jumped out at me also. It is quite interesting with all the winner stickers on the back windows and the fact that it was still being campaigned nine years later. The car reminds me of the original Old Reliable I that was raced by Jenkins/Strickler out of Ammon R. Smith. I want to say that car was a maroon '61 Biscayne from the same general region. It probably went the way of most old race cars being passed around until they finally just disappear.

Thanks Glenn. I'm a little surprised that '61 '09 lasted as long as it did. Chevy had a lot of problems with those new castings; so much so that they discontinued production of them before the end of the model year. They only sold 142 of them!
Mark, that's what caught my eye too. I was wondering if it could have been the same car after Ammon R Smith got rid of it, but the 'Ol Reliable had a long white scoop on the hood by the time they stopped racing it.
Glenn, one other question: One of the photos in the staging lanes shows a '63 Impala SS, white. Was that also West Hampton in '70? Funny thing.....a friend of mine owned a car just like that, black vinyl top and all when he lived on the Island. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

That '61 sticks in my mind because I had a '65 Impala SS 409 that I had the misfortune to run up against him with. I don't remember the car having a pedigree like that, but it was a long time ago. The way tech was at Hampton that car could have had newer and higher horsepower '09 in it and still been running as a 360.
The shot of the '63 behind the Willys was taken at Hampton also, but in June of '69. I believe that Willys is an early shot of John Olcotts restored "Russo & Santo's" record holder.

A lot of great old pics. This weekend at Atco there is the Nostalgia Super Stockers meet and I think I might be going to it. Does anyone remember a 1963-1965 Corvette that ran modified production? It was called "The Dancing Bear" and there was a picture of a bear on its hind legs. A guy by the name of Chip Banney owned the car.

What year was this image taken?
I am guessing the early 80's.
Couldnt believe my eyes when I saw this one!
The latter owner of this vehicle was Pro-Stock Chuck, who ran this car with a destroked BB and a stroked SBC under the 400 CI number. It ran a powerglide.
Even the paint scheme was still the same for years.
GOD! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif It had the Dick DeMets' Race Cars sponsor name on it ! I believe that shop was over in the Hawthorne/Torrance area. Man I'm gettin old... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif

[b] About two years ago, my wife, daughter, grandson and I were out doing the garage sale circuit
one Saturday morning. I was elected to stay in the car with my grandson as he was just an infant
while the women went to see if there was anything worthwhile.
My daughter came back and said - you have to come see this garage. They were selling
mostly household items but because of the slight drizzle it was set up in the front of an elongated
three car garage.
As you walked in there was a blue 35 Ford phaeton, another thirties Ford and a couple of older cars.
The newer cars were complete with the older ones going under some major restoration work.
As I looked at the cars ignoring the items for sale I saw an old set of cheater slicks mounted
on steel wheels in the corner. I asked the lady there, what are the slicks for? She had no idea
what I was talking about and said I'll get my Dad.
Her Dad came in, introduced himself as Ed and explained the were for his hot rod,
would I like to see it? Over in the corner was another car covered with blankets I had not even noticed.
As he uncovered it he told me it was his old hot rod from the fifties/sixties,
a 31 Ford if I remember correctly.
Its a real period piece and he had some pictures of it racing, I think at Cecil County.
He said he had ran it again a few years ago, but because of the lack of safety equipment could not
really make a full pass. He did not want to change anything so he had not been back to the track.
It has some great period parts including aircraft seat belts. I spent about an hour talking to Ed and
looking at his cars while my family left me to explore the rest of the neighborhood.
We went to a car show Memorial Day weekend and saw the car again. I could not find Ed,
but today I had my camera.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That gold 60 Corvette has got to be my old car and the only Vette I ever owned. Everything down to the missing grille, red lines on the front, the M/T's on 10" chrome reverse on the rear and that gold repaint and white soft top is identical to the one I bought in 1969 (actually traded a restored 64 442 HT even up that I resurrected from a total wreck with a new frame). Even the mufflers hanging down. Engine was sickand drinking oil, but original. It had a 3 speed in it. Was very low mileage. Sold it for the down payment on our first house soon afterwards. Had a friend that raced a small block Chev rail build the stock engine into a very hot 301. It was from somewhere around there, gotta be it. Anyone know anything else about this car? Oh yeah. More than doubled my money on that car and was tickled to death when I got $1600 for it. Only car we've owned that my wife got pulled over by a cop when she let it rip the night we got it. She got off with a warning, I'd have been in jail.

The wheels and tires did it for me. Old five-spokes with belted tires just looks so good. That thing was peobably a hoot to drive too.

When we ran our 1/8 mile AHRA strip back in the 60s & 70s we would get fliers like these from the booking agents. I mentioned the old Farkonis, Coil & Minick car to Kwhizz last weekend and it reminded me of a few of these that were still on the wall in my garage. I carefully peeled a couple off a couple of nights ago. I'll try to get a few more if anyone's interested.

I thought this was cool enough to share...
This past weekend at Chandler Harley Davidson...I got talking to one of their sales guys (I was working an event there http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif )...and I found out that he was from Orange County...so we started to talk. I found out that he knew a lot of the same people that I knew...and that we went to the same cruises, too.
Eventually we got around to OCIR...and Wednesday night and Saturday racing that they had there. He told me about a white Nova that he had...and the more he described it...I knew that I had pics of this car. I took the pics in today and showed him...and YEP, this is Larry's Nova...and when he finally put the 2 different nitrous set ups on it...it ran Pro Gas numbers....9.80's.
It was VERY well known in the "street racing scene" in the 80's...and was featured in the Hot Rod Magazines "10 Fastest Street Cars in So Cal" in the 80's, too. I am going to dig out the negative of this picture and have an 11x14 picture made for Larry. Needless to say, he was jazzed to see the pics!
BTW...he was NOT running a dominator...my memory sucks!
Now I just have to dig out all of the rest of the pics that I have...LOL http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Yeah, I remember the Hot Rod feature on that '67 Nova. Had a tunnel ram under that scoop but he was going to cut down the plenum to put the flat hood back on. I wanna say it mentioned that he took great pleasure in taking out 10-second street bikes. I think that car even had full interior and everything. Bruce, try to find out what happened to the car. Because he had 4 kids to haul around all the time, my Dad always drove a station wagon.
But because of his love of the drags and early muscle Mom always had something hot to drive.
Her first car was a '56 Ford convertible purchased used from one of his friends. I can't find
a picture of it, but I do have the original invoice. ( go figure)
-
-
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t114/dog427435/Super%20Chevy/ss137.jpg
-
-
She learned to drive in the '56 and in '58 he bought her a new Ford. It was another rag top
this one sporting a 352 with a 4bbl automatic. I would help Dad as he mildly modified
and customized it. He was always messing with it, we took out the grill center bar and
the stainless side inserts and he put glasspacs on. It sure felt like a quick car to me when we
would go out and he would "put his foot into it!"
Then he put the full continental on the back and it lost a lot of steam.
-
-
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t114/dog427435/Super%20Chevy/a036.jpg
-
-
The '58 was traded in, in '62 on another Ford convertible.
This one had a 390 4bbl with an automatic. It was a cool car, but how I wished he had gotten
a 406 with tripower instead! I must have told him a thousand times,
you should have gotten a XL with the 406. But still the 390 would put the old 352 to shame.
-
-
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t114/dog427435/Super%20Chevy/ss027.jpg
-
-
All my harassing him must have had some effect because in '66 the Ford was sold to a friend
and we got a new GTO. It had power everything with trips and an automatic. I was 17 by then
so you know this got snuck out for some hard cruising!
I had friends who had similar GTO's but with the 4bbl carb. Punch it in one of those and you'd
leave about 200 feet of rubber. (This was VERY important back then!)
Punch it in this one with the trips and stock linkage and you'd barely get a squeal. The only way
to get the tires burning were the 3/4 grand neutral drops.
But from a 15 mph roll this thing cooked!!
I can't find any good shots except this one in a friends driveway.
-
-
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t114/dog427435/Super%20Chevy/ss047.jpg
-
-
The GTO actually survived until '71 a testament to GM in it's self.
I was in the army and it was sold to a kid down the street. By the time
I got home I never saw it again.
-
-
Dad went back to Ford again, this time a '71 Torino GT 429 Cobra-Jet. It was loaded with an
automatic with 4.10 locked rear. You jumped on this beast and the tires would scream through
second gear. It was a nice car. I modified it in the late seventies with an aluminum manifold
and a big holley, but instead of tossing all the old parts I stashed them in the back of my garage.
I went to Ford in case I ever wanted to restore it and picked up a NOS Laser stripe kit in the early
eighties and stuck it away. That turned out to be a good move.
-
-
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t114/dog427435/Super%20Chevy/ss063.jpg
-
-
I had a bunch of Chevy's to mess with and lost interest with the Torino. My sister wound up
using it because she had no car and knocked the crap out of it. It stopped running and
wound up in my Mothers driveway for a couple years. A tree branch fell through the top at some
point and the car like the Titanic started taking on water. I was not in NY at this time and never
really noticed how bad the car was getting.
Only having about 30,000 miles on it in the early 90's it was a mess. It needed floors and a
trunk among other things. Way more work then I wanted to put into a Ford. Dumb - Dumb!
A friend lined up a buyer and it was sold. You can imagine how excited he was when I showed up
with the Laser stripe kit and old intake, carb and air cleaner.
He spent several years restoring it and did a nice job.
This is an article from "The Fairlaner News" about the car.
I have not seen the car in 10 years but still remember kicking ass
on Hempstead Tpke with it years ago!!

I also found the window sticker for the '62 - it is tough to make out in the scan, but the total price
is $3891.40. It's interesting that the '62 only cost $450 more then the '56!
-
-

-
To finish the story - On June 11, 1975 my father went to Mc Veigh Chevy to buy an end of production
'75 Caprice convertible. It was loaded, 400 - 4 bbl, a/c, power everything, am/fm tape - the works. Unfortunately when they submitted the order the factory came back and said -
Sorry no more orders after June 10th and would not make the car.
-
-
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t114/dog427435/Super%20Chevy/ss142.jpg
-
-
So with no more convertibles being made he decided to keep the Torino as a Sunday car and a month
or two later he ordered a '76 Elite as Mom's driver. It was a pretty cool car, white with blue leather,
and that blue half vinyl roof. Oh yeah it had a 460 - 4 bbl, C-6 and turbine wheels. It cooked!

Sorry, but at the time of the "hot Rod" piece, this 67 Nova was owned by BOYD Gaebel Of "The Whittier Boys". This group was also with well known hot rodder Bill Moorhead and Gayland Hill jr. It could have had a 1150 on the Sb chevy, but Boyd claimed to have many motors in it. The 2X4 setup was on it during the Hot Rod spead though. I don't know if maybe this Larry guy owned the car after Boyd as Boyd "claimed" he got this car from a "lil old lady" in Pasadena. This was and is one of my all time fav's. Scott Sullivan's car from 1979, right? I think Hot Rod recently credited this car as being the "first" Pro Street car? (Can of worms, I know.) Maybe they called it the first PS car that was actually driveable and reliable. This car knocked people's eyes out when it first came on the scene, much the same way Rick Dobbertin's '65 did soon after.

Yep that's Sullivan's Nova...
They may have called his the first pro street car Bill...but I have pics from 1979 at the Street Machine Nationals West that show a 1970? Nova that has the narrowed rear, gas tank in the trunk and big engine up front...at least on the west coast this guy was considered to be the first person to go the pro street route...

I grew up with a guy named Fred Bieler (sp?) Everyone called him Crazy Freddy for obvious reasons. He built a bunch of hot cars and did custom bodywork.
Freddy drove like a wild man, and Freddy was an innovator - In the late sixties Freddy took
a '62 Dodge with an 413" automatic and mated it with a wrecked Freeport modified. He installed the narrowed Halibrand quick-change with a set of 6 something gears. He took 2 stock rims and cut and welded them together and stretched a 10 or 12 inch racing tire on them. As I remember the tire looked more like a tractor tire then anything else. It was up high in the back with these monster tires tucked underneath!
Blasts down Hempstead Tpke were amazing with the uncorrected speedometer reaching over
100 mph in first with those wild gears.
Freddy also cut the inside out of the top of the back seat from side to side. He installed amps and a speaker from a movie theater in the trunk facing through the rear seat fabric. He cut the center
out of the dashboard and installed a tv speaker up front. Pulling into Wetsons with the 8-track
cranked up always brought everyone outside!
Freddy was from Brooklyn, but grew up with his Uncle in Elmont. The last I saw of him was in
late '70 at the Twilight bar in Elmont. He arrived in a wheelchair with some sort of
2 cycle motorcycle motor propelling it. He took off down Meacham Ave and I went in the Army
shortly afterward. I never saw him again! I would love to know what else Crazy Freddy dreamed
up from there!

[b] Found this framed memento while going through some stuff today.
Westhampton Drag Strip paid $10 for eliminator back in '68 - may not sound like a lot now, but back then
that bought better then 30 gallons of 100+ octane gas!
That's my '66 L72 SS Impala in the picture. I had a big problem ripping the rear control arms off the bottom
of the car when I ran slicks. I devised those backwards ladder arms with a set of air bags and it pretty much
kept things in place. To look at it now, it sure looks pretty strange!
Ran station wagon, big block with a/c springs in the front for that gasser look.
With the stiff and high suspension the ride got real interesting at the end of the strip, about 200 feet
past the traps there was this noticeable dip in the track surface.

Hi,
Can you tell me anything more about the Dancing Bear Corvette or its owner/driver Chip Banney? Chip was a friend of mine back when he owned a Gulf station in Brooklyn. I was only 16 at the time but I used to go to the races with him and help him with the car. I would like to contact him if you or anyone else might help me. Or even if you can direct me to more photos. I believe I was there when this picture was taken at Atco.

The ZL-1 list shows #64 as a Hugger Orange automatic being sold at Indian River Chevrolet. The pic shows this one as a SS/CA car . Possibly the same one ?
