JFR (John Force Racing) is scheduled to issue a statement at noon today. Not sure if that's Eastern or Pacific time.

UPDATED - 3-20 - 12:09 PM - Funny Car driver Eric Medlen, injured in a testing accident Monday at Gainesville Raceway, remained in critical condition Tuesday in intensive care at Shands at the University of Florida medical center.

According to Medlen’s father, John, doctors are continuing to work to reduce pressure and swelling from what has been characterized as a severe closed head injury suffered when the 33-year-old’s car crashed heavily into the guardwall.

“We would ask everyone to keep Eric and his family in their prayers while at the same time respecting their need for privacy in this very difficult time,” said Kelly Antonelli, a spokesperson for John Force Racing, Inc.

“Obviously, our primary concern is for Eric’s health,” Antonelli said, “but we also are aware of erroneous information that has been posted on various internet sites and, unfortunately, that has been a source of additional pain for the family.

“To address that issue, we will continue to provide daily medical updates authorized by the family and the medical staff here at Shands.”

my information came from, what I felt were, reliable sources.. it came from crew members... anyway's, he is in a coma with closed head injury's, the worst kind of neuro injury, let's just hope he survives, and has fully restored functions as a result of his injuries... it's gonna be a tough, tough road...

UPDATED - 3-21 - 10:38 - Injured NHRA Funny Car driver Eric Medlen survived a delicate, three-hour craniotomy procedure to relive pressure and hemorrhaging Tuesday evening but remained in critical condition Wednesday at Shands at the University of Florida medical center.

Over the next two weeks, the 33-year-old will remain in a drug-induced coma designed to promote healing.

“We consider ourselves fortunate that Eric is in one of the top hospitals in the world for this type of injury and is getting absolutely the best treatment possible,” said John Medlen, Eric’s father and crew chief.

“We want to thank Eric’s friends, fans, sponsors and the entire NHRA drag racing community for their support in this very difficult time for our family,” he said. “We would ask that they continue to remember Eric in their prayers. He’s a fighter, but he has a long battle ahead of him.”

The elder Medlen also asked, for Eric’s sake and the sake of the family, that fans refrain from speculation, especially on the internet, where erroneous information already has been a source of considerable anguish.

I put this on another bb but, I need to spread the idea. I hate of sound like a PSA but, while you are thinking of someone elses welfare, take some time and take care of your own! Check out your safety gear! Snell 95 helmet are now out of date. Open up your wallet and make certain you are safe.

God bless Eric, his family and team.

How do you tell the date on the helmet?

I would put money on John Force pulling his daughter out of the funny car class. Like the mechanics that work on them say, "I wouldn't get out of the electric chair to drive one of those things".

Too many things can go wrong and often do!

I would be suprised if he did pull her out. Racers are racers. They know the risks every time they climb into their car. The team may take a race or two off, but he and Ashley will be there in the end.

The sticker will be inside the helmet it will either be M or SA and a year (95,00,05). You should also find build date. For instance, my helmet was made in '97 built to SA95 standards. Time for me to get a new helmet. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif If you are getting a helmet, you can find '00 helmets about $30-50 cheaper, but they will be out of date in 2012. '05 helmets will be out of date in 2017.

It's not that I can't find the date, I've never really looked! I bought a brand new helmet about 3 years ago just for racing, but really haven't needed it since I'm stuck in the 14's. I don't want to get to the track someday and find out I can't race in the 13's because my helmet is out of date. I'll check the inside, thanks for the help.

Outdated or not: 13's, 14's or whatever........... It's just good sense to wear it. I would guess that an outdated helmet would still be safer than not wearing one at all. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Always a good idea to wear the helmet.

Not thinking, I once asked the question..."How much should I spend on a helmet" ?......The answer was.."How much is your head worth"...I bought the best they had...end of discussion. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/scholar.gif

Here is a website for Pyrotect helmets (Bell's other label) made in the USA. extreme supply (http://www.extremesupply.com/pyrotecthelmets/auto/pyrotectauto.htm) You can get a full face with helmet bag (SA2005) for $248. Free shipping and handling. M- motorcycle SA- Special application. Special application means flame retardant liner and designed to take repeated impacts (like off of a roll cage!) Most of us could get by with a M but I am willing to spend a little on my brain bucket! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Marlin,

Come on man!!! You're a dad and make your living with your head!

I've worn a helmet skiing and snowboarding for 12 years now. Anything that is a speed sport deserves wearing a head bucket.

Come to think of it, I should have been wearing one for drinking duty during my 20s. http://www.freesmileys.org/emo/eatdrink048.gif

Plus, you don't have to look like a cue ball either.

My wife didn't know what to get me for Christmas one year so she got me a Troy Lee custom mountain biking helmet:

http://www.yenko.net/attachments/260586-Rear.jpg

She thought I'd like something that reminded me of British Columbia, hence the Haida Indian mask design (we also have some Westcoast Indian art). It's tough to see in the pic, but red is metalflake and the black is really deep.

It's nice to have an understanding wife...She Get's It!
