Wondering if anyone has done a PA title search lately, I have the original PA title from the 3rd owner of my 70 L78 Nova. It is dated 9/73 (to the third owner) In the box next to that date is "date originally titled" which is 7/03/70. My car's build date is 05B May 2nd week 1970 (2 months prior to titling) which leads me to believe this car was in PA from new and titled new 7/3/70. PA DMV sent me the informtion on the thrid owner via abstract (3 years ago) I am wondering if they can find the original "titler" from when the car was new 7/3/70 just 3 years prior to the third owner.? Thanks for any advices.SULLY

per commonwealth of PA letter, dept of transportation, dated 3/7/07 ..."the bureau of motor vehicles, record retrieval unit, can only provide microfilm copies of records dating back ten years...."
phone # is 800 932 4600 (in state) & 717 412 5300.
sounds like you got lucky on your 87 GN.

I did a PA title search last year on my 69 L78 and I was able to get records back to 1974, when it was first titled in PA. I am not sure how the information would have changed from 3 years ago but it is only a $5.00 fee. Use the DL-135 form.
If you have a policeman friend ask him to get you the info.

Update, spoke to PA DMV today she said mail in the DL135 and you may or may not get all the way back to the new car title no definitive ruling , we'll see what happens..

I think the cost for this service is actually $5 per record/title so if the car had 5 owners then it would be $25. If you send $5 and PA DMV has record of 5 owners then you will get one and the top of the form will have a number denoting how many records they have and you send in another DL 135 with $5 multiplied by the number of records they have. I believe this is correct.

This is false information. I do them all the time, they will go back to new - if they have it. They lost some records along the way, and therefore may not be able to retrieve everything for every car. You need to know how to fill out the form correctly, and choose the correct 'reason code'. Also, make sure you get the form notarized, otherwise they will surely send it back. I am not aware of a number anywhere on the information that denotes how many records they have on file. I would suggest that you do the searches one at a time, making sure that you write in the vin # and the title # on each search. If you send multiple requests, you will likely get gyped on the response - been there, done that, several times. One final note, if you get a response that says there is no info, don't be afraid to send it in again with a copy of that response, and ask for it again - just make sure you pay the fee again and get it notarized again. A lot of times the depth of information that you receive depends on which person at the DMV processed your request on that given day. PA is not a bad state for title work, there are better states - but also worse states.
If you need some help with the form, or interpreting the info received, let me know.

just called PA DOT again & asked them if they went back further than 10 years, or needed to fill out a different form or re send the DL 135 form.. i got the same answer as in their letter, they do not have or will not release any records that are over 10 years. called the 717 412 5300 #.. marlin, if you know a different approach, pls send me a pm, as i'd like to get title history back on a car as well.

I have a book of title info older than 10 years. Don't call them, just send in the form.

When I did my PA Title search I called PA DOT and specifically asked about getting the title history of my car. I gave the person the VIN # and they pulled up the records and told me they had info back to 1974 on the car and to send in the DL135 form with payment. Within 3-4 weeks I had the information in my hands.

I spoke to PA DMV yesterday, the person told me that they cannot go back more than 10 years ON THE SYSTEM she was using, told me to send the 135 which I did, along with a brief narrative of what I was after and a copy of what they sent me three years ago, we'll see what happens

Generally, if you send in the 135, check off 'title history', they will search the 'purged records' automatically. Sometimes however, they can't find all of the purged records, bummer.
I just got a PA title search back yesterday and it went back to 1976. It looks like it was a copy from their microfiche because it had an additional record on the document for a 1969 VW, which I didn't ask for.
Take Marlins advice and send in the DL135 form...It took about 3 weeks.
Good luck.
Mike
